Abstract

Engineering materials failure remains a critical issue in structural and manufacturing applications, where unexpected fracture can lead to severe safety and economic consequences. Conventional approaches often address mechanical properties, stress analysis, and fracture behavior as separate topics, which may result in fragmented interpretations of failure mechanisms. However, material failure typically emerges from interactions between global mechanical response, stress localization, microstructural defects, and fracture initiation. This paper proposes an integrated conceptual framework that systematically links mechanical properties with failure mechanisms in engineering materials. The framework synthesizes key concepts from strength of materials and fracture mechanics to describe failure as a sequential and interconnected process, starting from applied loading and global stress–strain response, followed by stress concentration, defect activation, and crack initiation. By explicitly addressing the transition from macroscopic mechanical behavior to localized damage processes, the framework clarifies the role of defect sensitivity and stress localization in governing failure modes.

Abstract

This study examines the application of the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) method in an SME producing jimbe drums in Blitar, East Java, experiencing defect rate instability ranging from 4.92% to 6.21% during September 2025 – February 2026. Analysis was conducted using seven quality tools, including histogram, Pareto diagram, P-control chart, scatter diagram, and fishbone diagram. Key findings identified four dominant defect types: cracked wood (59.4%), hollow wood (21.2%), cracked paint (10.3%), and torn skin (9.1%), originating from four causal factors: human, material, method, and environment. Corrective actions implemented included standardization of the wood drying process for 2–3 weeks with turning every 4–6 hours, application of anti-pest insecticides post-turning, layered thin-coat painting technique, and controlled skin tension during installation. Post-implementation evaluation showed a significant defect rate reduction from an average of 5.46% to 3.61%, a 34.5% decrease. These results confirm that a PDCA approach integrated with seven quality tools can produce measurable improvements in skill-based handicraft industries.

Abstract

This study uses structural equation modelling (SEM) to examine how work systems affect employee performance among educational support personnel at a public university in Surabaya, with employee engagement acting as a mediating variable. Data were collected from 293 respondents using a Likert-scale questionnaire. The results show that the work system has a significant positive effect on employee engagement (β = 0.541; CR = 6.840), employee engagement has a significant positive effect on employee performance (β = 0.253; CR = 4.168), and the work system has a direct effect on employee performance (β = 0.341; CR = 4.991). The Sobel Test yielded Z = 3.55 (> 1.96), demonstrating that the relationship between the work system and performance is substantially mediated by employee involvement, confirming partial mediation. The findings underscore the importance of improving work systems encompassing physical, technological, and cultural environments as a strategy for enhancing engagement and performance among educational support staff.

Abstract

The manufacturing industry must ensure the reliability of production machinery so that processes run smoothly and business objectives are achieved. If machinery is used continuously, operational disruptions can lead to breakdowns, downtime, and a decline in production performance. Such conditions can disrupt the production process and result in losses for the company. Therefore, it is important to identify and control the risks of machinery failure. The objective of this study is to identify and reduce factors that could potentially cause “breakdowns” and improve the reliability of the Sound SE 1800 machine in plastic pallet production. The House of Risk (HOR) was used to determine which risk sources should be prioritized, and Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) was used to develop a maintenance plan. Research data included machine maintenance history, failure frequency, and downtime. The results of the study yielded recommendations for more efficient maintenance methods that can improve production machine performance.

Abstract

Administrative activities at PT XYZ’s warehouse are still performed manually, such as recording and verifying physical documents, which leads to delays, data duplication, and operational inefficiencies. This situation indicates the presence of administrative waste that slows down warehouse operations. This study aims to identify and analyze this administrative waste in order to improve work process efficiency. The approach used was a qualitative descriptive method through direct observation of goods receipt and issuance activities, with analysis using Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and the 5 Whys Analysis to identify the root causes of the problems. The results of the study indicate that waste occurs due to the lack of an integrated digital administrative system and the low technological proficiency of employees. Therefore, it is recommended that administrative processes be digitized and that digital skills training be provided to create more efficient work processes.

Abstract

UD. Gajah Delta is a manufacturing company whose main products are rantang and bakso steamers. Based on the current situation in the field, UD Gajah Delta has difficulty meeting market demand. Gajah Delta berjuang untuk memenuhi permintaan pasar. This is thought to be due to an imbalance in workload between workstations, as well as suboptimal planning of the number of employees. The aim of this study is to determine the optimal number of employees to meet customer demand. Based on the workload measurement using the Full Time Equivalent (FTE) method, two workstations were found to be normal: the cutting station (1.24) and the finishing station (1.22). However, the workstations for lid production (2.68) and sieve production (4.25) were categorised as overload. Meanwhile, the handle production station had an FTE value of 5.77 and the pot body production station had an FTE value of 8.98. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the number of employees at the stations for making handles and making the body of the steamer.
