Abstract

The issuance of the Indonesian Ulema Council (Indonesia: Majelis Ulama Indonesia or  MUI) fatwa declaring Ahmadiyya as a deviant sect and its followers as having departed from  Islamic teachings has impacted the stereotypes surrounding the majority community. The novel  "Maryam" is a work of fiction based on the experiences of Okky Madasari's best friend as an  Ahmadiyya adherents. The novel narrates the discrimination and injustice faced by Ahmadiyya  adherents and serves as a form of social criticism by the author towards the subaltern discourse  surrounding Ahmadiyya adherents. This research aims to identify the various forms of  subalternity experienced by Ahmadiyya adherents in the novel "Maryam". The research  specifically examines the different forms of subalternity imposed by the majority group against  Ahmadiyya adherents based on the concept of subalternity, which refers to the oppressed who  lack access to voice their concerns developed by Spivak. The utilization of critical discourse  analysis in this research helps identify and categorize the various forms of subalternity through  the predetermined data corpus. The compiled data corpus is the primary source for the  researcher to describe, interpret, and analyze the text, context, and discourse in the novel  "Maryam". The data corpus will be analyzed through three stages: 1. Description, 2.  Interpretation, and 3. Explanation. The research results indicate that the forms of subalternity  depicted by the author in the novel "Maryam" include marginalization and silencing.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication styles of presidential candidate pair Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka in the 2024 presidential election debates broadcast on television. The method used is quantitative content analysis of debate recordings, focusing on verbal and non-verbal language, ways of conveying messages, and responding to debate opponents. The results show significant differences in the communication styles of the two candidates. Prabowo Subianto tends to use an aggressive communication style that reflects his character as a firm and confrontational leader, while Gibran Rakabuming Raka more often displays a passive communication style that indicates a more accommodative approach and avoids conflict. These findings provide insight into how communication styles can reflect candidate personalities, backgrounds, and political strategies in an effort to gain voter support. The implication is that candidates, campaign teams, political parties, and the media need to strategically design and align communication styles with voter preferences and other campaign elements. However, further research is needed with wider media coverage, a multi-method approach, and linking with other variables to get a more comprehensive picture of the dynamics of communication styles in political contestation in Indonesia.

Abstract

A reliance on official sources and a tendency to reinforce established narratives characterize mainstream media representations of political elites. This study seeks to analyze how Sediksi, as an alternative media, interprets political elites. Through critical discourse analysis, it examines how hegemony and inequality are reproduced through language, especially from the perspective of marginalized groups. This study shows that alternative media provides a critical lens that challenges dominant elite representations. By using satirical language, alternative media interpret elites as dwarfed by various associations with incompetence, ignorance, corruption, deceit, and marginalized communities. Alternative media not only provides space for criticism of political elites, but also empowers the public to challenge the narratives imposed by dominant forces. By amplifying marginalized voices, alternative media encourages collective resistance and builds public awareness by presenting issues that people often face in their daily lives. This study argues that alternative media is capable of creating more inclusive interpretations and siding with marginalized perspectives.

Abstract

This systematic literature review aims to analyze various studies on relationship violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data collection was conducted with sources from Crossref between 2020 and 2022. The keywords used were "domestic violence," "intimate partner violence," "gender-based violence," and "sexual violence." From this search found thirty articles related to the topic. The results showed increased violence in relationships during the COVID-19 pandemic in various countries, with forms of violence being emotional, physical, verbal, sexual, and financial. The underlying factors are economic pressure, social isolation, difficulty and unwillingness to seek help, and sociocultural factors that favor violence. Meanwhile, the way to overcome this is through strengthening community relations, increasing ease of access to health care, government economic assistance, and improving information and communication technology for access to help and information. Another result found was a reluctance on the part of victims to seek help due to fear, shame, distrust of the authorities, and local culture and social norms.

Abstract

As local wisdom inherent in Javanese life, pamali is often considered a myth or taboo. Many Indonesians use pamali as a guideline to behave according to morals and ethics. People who believe in the existence of pamali, believe that violating pamali can bring certain risks or consequences. The messages and meanings contained in pamali are the result of social construction that is closely related to reality. Reality can occur due to the process of action and interaction between human individuals. One form of social construction of pamali is the existence of pamali expressions that tend to be aimed at women who are considered to discredit the existence of women. This study aims to describe the messages and meanings of pamali that are communicated and constructed, so that they can play a role in shaping the character of Javanese women. This research uses a constructivistic paradigm and qualitative research methods with data collection techniques of observation and in-depth interviews conducted in Kranggan Village, Pakisaji, Malang Regency. This research produces five new propositions based on the results of informants' answers who have communicated and constructed the message or meaning contained in pamali, so that it plays a role in the character building of Javanese women.

Abstract

The collapse of the newspaper industry since 2008 has made many publishers seem to have lost their way. The concept of media convergence, which was initially considered the only way to deal with the development of internet and digital technology, has not been able to make media companies rise from the threat of death. Including the fate of newspapers in Indonesia that have not found a "way out" to maintain their existence. The good news only emerged in early 2024, when The New York Times announced that their digital subscribers had reached 10 million subscribers! The success of The New York Times spontaneously raised new hopes among newspaper managers for their future. What the newspaper from Uncle Sam's country did is certainly interesting to study and analyze. Thus, their success story can be a "road map" for other newspaper industries to achieve the same success. Researchers tried to analyze what steps The New York Times had taken by conducting documentary research, with the main material coming from the company's annual report from 2008 to 2024. The results are expected to be an example for newspaper publishers in the country to take concrete steps in adapting and building innovation to face the digital era in the future.
