Abstract

Abstract

Market modernization has brought significant changes to the traditional economic structure, including threatening the sustainability of porters' livelihoods. This study focuses on Sudimampir Market in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, which is known as the largest wholesale center in Kalimantan. At Sudimampir Market, workers use private transportation such as pedicabs, bajaj, and motorized vehicles. The results of the porter study at the market can be divided into three types bajaj porters, becak porters, and ojek porters. Most porters have worked at the market for a long time with years of experience. The harsh working conditions for porters include low daily income ranging from Rp. 50,000 to Rp. 150,000. This income is often unpredictable and insufficient to meet basic needs. Some workers even seek part-time or additional jobs when their primary income is insufficient. Additionally, the lack of adequate rest facilities and the health risks they face add to the challenges of porter work. Social interactions between porters, merchants, and buyers reveal cooperation and mutual dependence. Challenges faced by porters include tariffs and price negotiations that often do not align with the workload. Workers face challenges from thugs demanding security or kiosk fees. Bad weather, such as rain, increases the physical risk of falling for workers while transporting goods. The daily income of porters adds uncertainty to their lives. Although some porters try to find other jobs to supplement their income, they often return to their original work due to skill limitations.

Abstract

Child labor in the tobacco sector remains a critical problem in Indonesia, especially in rural areas. In Wakan Village, East Lombok, children are generally involved in tobacco farming due to entrenched economic pressures and local norms. This study aims to analyze how parents socially construct the meaning of child labor in tobacco farming. A qualitative case study approach is used. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with parents and community leaders, hands-on field observations, and documentation. These findings reveal that children aged 10-15 years are actively involved in three main stages of tobacco production: fertilization (berabok), leaf binding (begelantang), and drying (bejelok). These tasks expose children to risks such as exposure to chemicals, physical strain, and school disruptions. Economic needs shape parents' perceptions, inherited social norms, and the belief that early work builds responsibility. The results show that child labor is not only driven by poverty, but also by cultural constructions that normalize and legitimize children's participation in agriculture. This study demonstrates the importance of community-based empowerment approaches rooted in local values to reduce child labor practices. Collaborative efforts are essential to raise awareness, challenge traditional beliefs, and protect children's rights in rural farming communities.

Abstract

The interplay between gender and vulnerability is crucial in understanding the impact of climate change-induced flooding. Men and women employ distinct adaptive strategies in response to these events, with significant differences observed between male-headed households (MHHs) and female-headed households (FHHs). This study analyzed the social, infrastructural, economic, and environmental dimensions of vulnerability using a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions with 216 households. Findings from the weighted average index (WAI) revealed that FHHs experience higher vulnerability across all dimensions, particularly in social and physical aspects. The disparity in multidimensional vulnerability between MHHs and FHHs is statistically significant, as shown by a t-test (F = 3.423, p-value = 0.000). Specifically, 42% of FHHs fall into the very high vulnerability category, compared to just 6% of MHHs. The study identifies sociocultural norms as key contributors to this disparity, influencing households' ability to respond to and recover from flood-related disasters. To mitigate future impacts, the study recommends targeted interventions for FHHs, including improved access to services, capacity-building initiatives, awareness training, livelihood support programs, and greater involvement in disaster preparedness and risk reduction strategies. Addressing these factors is essential for enhancing resilience and reducing vulnerability among FHHs in the face of climate change.

Abstract

The contribution of the basic sector to the economy of a region makes this basic sector often referred to as the leading sector. The role of leading sectors has a big impact on increasing the economic development of an area. Theoretically, the leading sectors play a role in encouraging economic growth by increasing employment opportunities. This research aims to analyze the leading sectors of and understand the potential of the financial sector in Banjar Regency. The analytical methods used in this research are Location Quotient (LQ) and Klassen Typology. The secondary data used in this research is the annual data available on the Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) Banjar Regency and the Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) South Kalimantan Province websites for the 2014-2023 period. The results of the Location Quotient analysis show that there are 11 base sectors. Additionally, the result of the Klassen Typology analysis emphasizes the availability of five sectors in quadrant I. One of the base sectors and also a potential sector that can still develop rapidly in Banjar Regency is the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries sector. The fisheries sub-sector has the potential to be developed in aquaculture. This research will provide an overview of what policies are appropriate to improve existing sectors in Banjar Regency.
