Abstract

The continuous use of chemical insecticides to control white grubs (Lepidiota stigma F.) in sugarcane fields may negatively affect the environment, so botanical alternatives are needed. This study evaluated gamal leaves (Gliricidia sepium) as a botanical pesticide for controlling white grubs. The research was conducted at the TEFA, Politeknik LPP Yogyakarta, and the Integrated Research and Testing Laboratory (LPPT), Universitas Gadjah Mada. A Randomized Block Design was used with gamal leaf doses of 0, 250, 500, 750, and 1000 g, and comparison treatments using chemical insecticides with the active ingredients fipronil and carbofuran 3%. The observed parameters were live grubs, dead grubs, infected grubs, and infection rate. Gamal leaf treatments produced different responses. Live grubs ranged from 2 to 3 individuals, while dead grubs ranged from 7 to 8 individuals. The highest infected grubs in gamal treatments occurred at 250 g and 750 g, with an infection rate of 4. These findings indicate that gamal leaves have potential as a botanical pesticide for white grub control in sugarcane fields. Abstract

Empty fruit bunches of oil palm (EFB) are solid waste generated from the palm oil industry. One alternative utilization of EFB is as raw material for compost production. This study aimed to determine the effect of local microorganism bioactivators on the quality of EFB compost. The research was conducted at the greenhouse of the experimental garden of Politeknik LPP Yogyakarta, Wedomartani, Sleman. The study used a non-factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four bioactivator treatments, namely EM4, bamboo shoot MOL, shallot MOL, and POME MOL. he observed parameters included the physical properties of compost (temperature, color, odor, moisture content, and pH), the chemical properties of compost (organic C content, C/N ratio, and total N, P, and K), as well as compost quality assessed through a rice seed germination test, which was analyzed descriptively. The results showed that chemically, the C-organic content of all treatments met the minimum standard; however, the C/N ratio was still above the compost maturity standard. The POME MOL treatment produced the highest N and P contents and the lowest C/N ratio, while the highest germination percentage was obtained from the EM4 treatment at 84%. Based on these results, POME MOL was the best local microorganism bioactivator for producing EFB compost with quality close to the standard and without inhibiting plant growth.

Abstract

The catfish farming industry uses a significant amount of water for its production processes, resulting in significant waste production. Catfish are a type of freshwater fish highly sought after by Indonesians. Catfish waste often causes problems due to its foul odor due to contamination with the environment, which is rich in putrefying microbes. The research location was the Laboratory in collaboration with the P3GI Laboratory in Kediri Regency. The research method used AAS ang SWOT analysis. The test samples used liquid organic fertilizer and solid fertilizer produced from the process of making fertilizer from catfish head and offal waste. The results of the study are as follows: the main macronutrients of the POC from catfish head waste are Nitrogen (N) at an average of 1.37%, Phosphorus (P) at 2.40%. Potassium (K) content at 3.90%, and Organic Carbon at 0.52%. Solid catfish head waste fertilizer contains 4.5% nitrogen (N), 6.80% phosphorus (PO4), and 4.70% potassium (K). Organic carbon (C) is 31%. Therefore, the nutrient analysis results for the organic fertilizer production process from catfish head waste show that the solid organic catfish waste fertilizer has the highest nutrient content, which is very good for plants. SWOT analysis is very important to carry out to make it easier to produce safe, reliable and good quality fertilizer.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of frangipani leaf (Plumeria acuminata) extract on the in vitro growth of Curvularia sp. isolated from oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) and to determine the most effective extract concentration for inhibiting fungal growth. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of five treatments: 0 g (control), 10 g, 20 g, 30 g, and 40 g of frangipani leaf extract, with four replications. The observed parameters included colony length, colony width, and colony diameter, which were measured on the seventh day after inoculation. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the 5% significance level. Results showed that frangipani leaf extract significantly affected the growth of Curvularia sp. The 30 g extract concentration exhibited the strongest antifungal activity by producing the smallest colony size, whereas lower concentrations were less effective and a higher concentration (40 g) showed reduced inhibitory activity. The antifungal effect is attributed to the presence of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids, which interfere with fungal cell structure and metabolism. These findings indicate that frangipani leaf extract has promising potential as an environmentally friendly botanical fungicide for sustainable oil palm disease management.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze rice farmers' perceptions of Komsah, a litter-based organic fertilizer, in Karanganyar Regency, Indonesia. A quantitative descriptive method was employed, with a sample of 42 rice farmers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews using structured questionnaires and analyzed using a Likert scale (1–5) based on Rogers' five innovation attributes: relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability. The data were analyzed descriptively, and validity and reliability tests were conducted. The results indicate that farmers' perceptions of Komsah organic fertilizer remain generally in the undecided category across most dimensions. Farmers acknowledged that Komsah offers technical benefits, is compatible with rice farming practices, is easily accessible for trial, and provides positive environmental impacts. However, they remain doubtful about its economic advantages, its compatibility with the habitual use of chemical fertilizers, and its efficiency in terms of cost, labor, and time application. The observability dimension received the highest rating, as the environmental benefits and knowledge enhancement were more readily perceived compared to economic benefits, which have yet to be clearly demonstrated. The findings imply that although farmers recognize the technical and environmental benefits of Komsah, economic considerations and uncertainty regarding profitability remain significant barriers to its adoption. Therefore, dissemination strategies should emphasize cost-benefit analysis, field demonstrations, and gradual integration with conventional fertilizers to strengthen farmers' confidence and accelerate adoption.

Abstract

Land spinach (Ipomoea reptans Poir.) is an economically important leafy vegetable widely consumed in Indonesia due to its high nutritional value, including vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, and bioactive compounds beneficial to human health. The increasing demand for fresh vegetables has encouraged efforts to improve land spinach productivity. However, productivity at the farm level remains suboptimal, partly due to inappropriate nitrogen fertilization and plant density management. Nitrogen is a key nutrient regulating vegetative growth, while plant density determines the level of competition for light, water, nutrients, and growing space. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of nitrogen application rates, plant density, and their interaction on the growth and productivity of land spinach. The hypothesis proposed that increasing nitrogen rates combined with appropriate plant density would enhance plant growth and productivity, and that a significant interaction exists between both factors. The experiment was conducted in Tanon Village, Papar District, Kediri Regency, Indonesia, from October to November 2025 using a factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The first factor consisted of three urea application rates (300, 400, and 500 kg ha?¹), while the second factor consisted of three plant densities (4, 5, and 6 seeds per planting hole). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at the 5% significance level. The results showed that nitrogen application significantly affected plant height, leaf number, leaf area, fresh weight per plant, and fresh weight per plot. Plant density also significantly influenced most growth and yield variables. A significant interaction between nitrogen rate and plant density was observed for leaf area, fresh weight per plant, and fresh weight per plot. The combination of 500 kg urea ha?¹ and 4 seeds per planting hole produced the highest fresh weight per plant (67.68 g plant?¹), whereas the combination of 500 kg urea ha?¹ and 6 seeds per planting hole resulted in the highest productivity (9.98 kg plot?¹ or approximately 49.9 t ha?¹). It can be concluded that increasing nitrogen application up to 500 kg ha?¹ combined with appropriate plant density management effectively enhances the growth and productivity of land spinach. For maximizing yield per unit area, the combination of 500 kg urea ha?¹ and 6 seeds per planting hole is recommended.
