Abstract

Central Java is the second largest cardamom-producing province in Indonesia, with a total cardamom production of 9,814.4 kg in 2020. However, cardamom cultivation by farmers is less effective and is left without processing after harvesting. Such conditions cause cardamom yields to be not optimal in terms of quality and quantity. Institutions that run well are also predicted to be able to improve farm performance. The purpose of this research is to find out: (1) the characteristics of social and institutional capital of cardamom farmers in the perhutani land in Banyumas Regency; (2) the direct influence of social and institutional capital on the performance of cardamom farmers' farming in perhutani lands in Banyumas Regency; and (3) knowing whether the institutional variable is a moderating variable in the direct relationship between social capital and the performance of cardamom farming in perhutani land, Banyumas Regency. Data analysis was carried out by calculating productivity, profit, and feasibility to estimate the performance of cardamom farming in the forest area of Banyumas Regency. To determine whether social and institutional capital affects the performance of cardamom farming in perhutani land, Banyumas Regency, measured using Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis. The results showed that the characteristics of social and institutional capital in the research location, on average, had a high category. Cardamom farming has been profitable and feasible to be developed. SEM-PLS analysis shows that the most dominant indicator measuring social capital is trust, while the most prevalent indicator measuring institutional is cultural values. Furthermore, social and institutional capital directly affect the performance of cardamom farming, but institutions cannot be a moderating variable of the social capital variable on farming performance.

Abstract

Papaya is one of the horticultural crops that can be developed in current cultivation because it takes advantage of Indonesia’s tropical climate and is traditionally easily cultivated by farmers. Improper post-harvest handling resulted in a low selling price of papaya in the market. This condition caused farmers to experience losses and their numbers continue to decline because they chose to stop cultivating papaya. Even though the condition of papaya farmers continues to decline, some still persist in cultivating papaya. This is closely related to the motivation of farmers. This study aims to (1) examine the motivation level of farmers in cultivating papaya, (2) examine the factors that influence farmers’ motivation in cultivating papaya, (3) examine the influence between the factors that influence the motivation of farmers in cultivating papaya plants in Mojosongo Sub-district, Boyolali Regency. The research method used is a quantitative method. The research location was chosen purposively (intentionally) to be in Mojosongo Sub-district, Boyolali Regency. The sampling method used proportional random sampling and obtained 70 respondents. Data analysis applies multiple linear regression analysis. The results of the study prove that: (1) the motivation of farmers in cultivating papaya belongs to the high category; (2) the income variable is in the very high category, land area is in the medium category, the number of family is in the medium category; (3) the variables of land area and number of family have a significant effect on farmer motivation while income has no effect.

Abstract

Population growth triggers the need for national food to increase, including the need for vegetable crops as a complement to human nutrition. Efforts made by farmers to meet the population’s needs for vegetable crops and a source of income, often have not paid attention to environmental conditions. Beruk Village is one of the villages where the people cultivate vegetables crops on the slopes of the mountains which should be used as a conservation area. This condition certainly requires farmers to always learn and apply appropriate local techniques so as not to harm the surrounding environment. This research aimed to explore the learning process of farmers in obtaining and examining local knowledge in vegetable cultivation. This study used a qualitative approach method with the interactive model analysis techniques of Miles and Huberman. The results showed that local knowledge of local farmers comes from parents/hereditary, local village farmers, and farmers outside the village through oral, experience, trial and error, and observation. The local knowledge includes seeding (garlic, onion, carrot), land processing stages and its frequency, ‘kalenan’ (horizontal drains), ‘kali gondhang’ (vertical drains), ‘plipit’ (the arrangement stones on the edge of ‘larikan’), benefits of spacing, planting time and season, intercropping, benefits of grass in agricultural land, fertilization methods, weeding, thinning, manual irrigation, utilization of agricultural and livestock waste, as well as method, age, and yield of harvest. The local agricultural tools used are hoe, crowbar, ‘ganco’, garden fork, trowel, sickle, bucket, sack, ‘lanjaran’, and its binder from natural material.

Abstract

Housewives who participate as workers will experience multiple roles in their lives. The involvement of women in the workforce has the consequence of limiting time in work and family life. Understanding the balance of roles is essential because it can give rise to positive and negative impacts from these multiple roles. This research aims to describe and analyze the roles of housewives and gender relations in the family. This research method is descriptive qualitative with a case study approach. The process for determining informants was carried out purposively with the criteria of coming from a complete farming family (husband and wife) and the wife taking part in instant herbal medicine processing so that 22 informants consisting of the Slogoretno Village Head (1 person), a housewife and her husband (10 pairs), chairman of the family welfare empowerment (PKK) of Slogoretno Village (1 person). Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, employing Miles and Huberman’s interactive analysis and Harvard gender analysis methodologies. Data validity uses triangulation of sources and methods. The results obtained in this research are that the multi-role forms carried out by housewives, especially in farming families, are divided into 7 roles, namely the roles of mother, wife, worker, relative, and roles in domestic, community, and individual activities. The gender dynamics established often involve patterns of cooperation in role division and decision-making, affecting access, control, and benefits related to resources. In Slogoretno Village, the division of roles within farming families reveals that wives and husbands primarily handle reproductive tasks, while productive and social roles are typically shared.

Abstract

This study investigates the psychological impact of farmers’ sentiments on land conversion associated with the national strategic project for constructing the Solo-Yogyakarta toll road, focusing on the asset aspects of farmers’ families. Employing descriptive and survey approaches, supplemented by in-depth interviews to enhance the research design, the study utilized a random sampling method with a proportional cluster, encompassing a sample size of 258 participants. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires, and analysis involved cross-tabulation and chi-square descriptive analysis to examine relationships between factors. The findings reveal that farmers experience psychological distress, particularly sadness, due to the change in land use and the option to sell their land. Farmers’ attitudes toward compensation procedures were generally neutral. Overall, the study highlights the significant psychological impact of land conversion, predominantly manifesting as sadness among farmers. The research underscores the need for policy development to establish support programs by relevant entities, ensuring that compensation funds are effectively utilized to generate new income sources for the affected farmers.
