Abstract

This study examined the borrowing practices of street vendors in the Cogon public market, Cagayan de Oro, Philippines, with a specific focus on their reliance on the informal "5-6" lending system. The research assesses the relationship between street vendors' profiles (such as age, sex, type of products sold, and estimated daily sales) and their borrowing practices, including loan amount, interest rates, payment schemes, and the frequency of reborrowing. Utilizing a cross-sectional quantitative design, data were collected from 251 street vendors engaged in "5-6" lending. Chi-square tests were used to analyze the associations between vendor profiles and borrowing practices. Results revealed that most street vendors borrowed small-scale loans of P5,001-P10,000 ($87.24-$174.45), often with high interest rates of 20% over a two-month period, paying daily, which created a continuous debt and reborrowing cycle. Significant associations were found between age, daily sales, and credit value, as well as between product type, sex, and the frequency of reborrowing. The study concludes that the informal lending system imposes substantial financial burdens on street vendors, particularly women and those selling fast-moving goods, contributing to a cycle of debt dependency.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper examines how Telegram's market positioning, digital marketing strategies, and privacy-oriented business model have unintentionally created an attractive environment for criminal activities. Applying established marketing frameworks—including the Segmentation, Targeting, Positioning (STP) model and the marketing mix (4Ps: Product, Price, Place, Promotion)—alongside consumer behavior theories of trust and anonymity, this study analyzes Telegram's business practices. A comprehensive literature review on platform marketing, digital anonymity, cybersecurity, and darknet market theory provides contextual grounding within broader academic discussions. The analysis reveals that Telegram's broad market positioning, minimal governance, and emphasis on user privacy significantly facilitate criminal activities, such as identity theft, drug trafficking, and dissemination of illicit materials. The paper proposes strategic and policy recommendations emphasizing the importance of achieving a balance between safeguarding user privacy and mitigating the exploitation of digital platforms for illicit purposes. This research uniquely integrates traditional marketing frameworks and consumer behavior theories with cybersecurity literature to evaluate Telegram’s unintended role in enabling online criminal ecosystems.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the message of a person who committed suicide in a letter that was found on 7th September 2021. To define the messages in the letter, this study observed the realization of the theme and rheme types and structure. So, there are three focuses of this study; (1) how is the realization of theme and rheme in the letter, (2) how is the structure of the theme and rheme in the letter, and (3) what are the messages the person who committed suicide wanted the readers to know. The analysis defined three findings. First, most of the themes are in the type of single-ideational which explains the confession of the writer because the theory of ideational theme explains it as a theme for a statement or declarative mode of clause. In this first finding, the writer was identified as well-committed in his action of doing suicide. Second, all the themes from each clause are linked in a Constant thematic pattern. This second finding explains the cohesion of the ideas of the writer in his writings. Third, the statement of the writer which was indicated by the single ideational theme and the message unity which was explained the by finding of the constant thematic progression pattern explained 4 messages (1) a giving responsibility of his children to his wife, (2) complains about his wife disrespect to him, (3) a farewell to his children, and (4) a confirmation of his authorship in the letter. The messages which are defined in the letter tell that the motive of the suicide is “a long-term marriage conflict”.

Abstract

This paper explores the conflict between conservatism and modern society in Israel, focusing on the ideological divide between secular and ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) communities. Drawing on conservatism theory, modernization theory, and conflict theory, the study analyzes how these forces shape political, social, and cultural landscapes. The persistence of Haredi conservatism, rooted in traditional values and religious autonomy, contrasts with the progressive demands of a modernizing Israeli society, creating tensions that manifest in governance challenges, military service exemptions, and debates over public policy. The analysis highlights how conservatism provides stability and identity while resisting transformative pressures, while modernization drives gradual integration through workforce participation, education, and economic shifts. Conflict theory underscores the societal polarization and competition for power between ideological groups, complicating efforts to foster inclusivity and unity. By examining the Israeli context, the paper offers broader insights into the global dynamics of conservatism and modernity, emphasizing the importance of adaptive governance, equitable representation, and inclusive dialogue to address these tensions and promote societal cohesion. By examining the interactions between tradition and progress, these frameworks underscore the necessity of finding a balance between preserving cultural identity and embracing the demands of modernity to achieve long-term stability and inclusivity.
