Abstract

Mixing of the language is the insertion of a word or phrase of one language to other language where one language as a base or matrix language. A person who has mixed is if he or she uses a word or phrase from another language. Otherwise, the phenomenon of mixing occurs, if a person uses one clause which has the grammatical structure of one language and after that, it is constructed based on the grammar of another. The phenomena of code-mixing can also occur in English students‟ communication. Therefore, this research aims to find out what is content word‟s in insertional code-mixing found in the utterances of the English Department students of Putera Batam University in Batam, Riau Islands. Analysis of the data referring to the code-mixing typology of utterances that led to the insertion of the characteristics of the intervention code (insertional code-mixing) between Indonesian and English based on the code-mixing typology proposed by Pieter Muysken.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine whether there is significant correlation between students’ personality traits and their speaking skill based on Big Five Personality theory: Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism and Openness (Costa and McCrae: 1999).The correlation research was needed to analyze deeply. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and speaking test. The data were analyzed with Pearson Product-Moment. The result of this researchwas personality traits and speaking skills had correlated each other. It means that the higher extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness are the higher speaking skill is. However, the higher neuroticism is the lower speaking skill will be.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze students' perspectives toward how teachers in implement character education. Then, to analyze how teachers prepare in learning devices and inserting character education in the learning process in the form of RPS. Education is very decisive towards the formation of character, personality, character and character of students. Existing phenomena in the field such as crime, criminal acts, immoral actsand drug use, are considered as an impact of education that does not have character values in it. Moreover, there are many various frauds and crimes ranging from corruption, bullying, drugs in the school environment. The occurrence of various frauds and frauds indicates a lack of morals, character and national character. Realizing this, the Indonesian government through the Ministry of National Education launched a character education model to improve the character and character of the Indonesian people. This does not mean that previously there was no character education, but the government emphasized character education ina systematic manner. The first step in planting character education into the preparation and learning process. The teacher in this case is the key to the success of the application of character education because the teacher is directly dealing with students. Teachers in this case are required to prepare learning devices and then implement character education in the class. However, in the meantime the teacher is still not fully prepared to carry out this character education. Most teachers can insert the values of the nation's character into the Learning Implementation Plan but cannot be fully realized in the classroom. Meanwhile students are required to implement character education both at school and in the environment.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reveal how significant vocabulary mastery to reading comprehension skill for non English Department of EFL Students in Batam island. Method of collecting data used in this research is series of test. They are pre-test and post test. The population of this research is about4 departments from non English major. They are about 220 samples.Method of sampling by using Taro Yamane formula. There series of test which will be applied such as Paired T- Test and Significance Test. The instrument of the reseach is pre test passage with consist of 20 questions, they are comprehension test and 10 vocabulary test and post test passage with the equal level of difficult and also consist of 10 reading comprehension questions and 10 vocabulary questions.

Abstract

Writing is the most difficult and complicated language skill which is learnt by almost the students in every level of education. Moreover, writing English is an inseparable part of students throughout their academic life. They commit different kinds of errors and mistakes in learning English as a foreign language which are due to poor knowledge with grammar, thus itoften appears to be a difficult task for them to write. These problems are very obvious in writing composition or any other essay. Some mistakes are normally made by students when they do not understand well about the English grammar. Commonly, many of the students make grammar mistakes in their English language learning especially in productive skill such as writing. Problems in foreign language learning especially in English areunavoidable. They are difficult enough to be avoided. Therefore, this research analyzed students’ problems in grammar that could be seen from their writing to see the correlation of grammar toward writing ability. It was important to do because the analysis could give some advantages for both students and lecturers as language teaching achievement. As the result, most of EFL University students had problem in grammar. They made error inusing kind of tenses. The problem could be seen from their writing which used wrong verb in the sentences. And, it made their writing incorrect. Moreover, it proved that there was a significance correlation between problem faced in grammar and writing ability of EFL university students.

Abstract

This research referred to the experiences of the researchers in providing students writing courses in the context of EFL (English as Foreign Language) in Batam. It was found that students’ essay writing contained several grammatical errors to plagiarism. This study aimed to determine the level of effectiveness of written corrective feedback (WCF) on the quality of students’ essay writing. The research method was quasiexperimental where the control class was given treatment by using no WCF and the experimental class was given WCF. Both scores from control and experiment classes were different. The mean of experiment class was higher than the mean from control class. After analyzing them statistically, it was found that the hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It meant that WCF had a significant effect on the quality of essay writing. It was concluded that WCF is a better way in improving the quality of students' essay writing.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the students need at chemical industry major at SMKN 2 Bojonegoro. This is classified as mixed method research design. It used two kinds of instruments namely questionnaire and interview guidelines. The questionnaire aims to gain and collect information from students especially their need related to English teaching and learning. While, interview guideline is used to gather information from English teacher at SMKN 2 Bojonegoro. The result shows that there are some skills and language components that students need at chemical industry major such as; listening, speaking, vocabulary, and grammar. Based on the data obtained from questionnaire, most of students say that listening and speaking are two important skills and needed at chemical industry major. While at school, the ESP approach is not applied yet, as a result, it influences on choosing materials. It can be concluded that in designing materials, the teachers and curriculum maker should do needs analysis and analyze what actually students need and work need.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to examine the effect of using realia objects toward students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at tenth grade of SMK N 1 Tambusai Utara. The design of this research was quasi experimental research design. The research used cluster sampling with 32 students as participants for both of experimental and control classes. SPSS was used to analyze the data. After analyzing the data by using independent sample t-test, the data showed that there was a significant effect in post-test score between experimental and control classes. The mean score in experimental class was 51.3031 with the standard deviation was 6.46. Meanwhile in control class the mean of post-test score was 39.617, and standard deviation was 6.67319. With df both of two classes was 30, and t-value was 5.184 with p-value 0.000 compared with t-table 5% (0.05) = 1697 and 1% (0.01) = 2457. The data shows that t-value of 5.184 > t-table 5% = 1697 and 1% = 2457. Thus the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that there was a significant effect of using realia objects toward students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at the tenth grade of SMK N1 Tambusai Utara.

Abstract

This article discusses the meaning and types of English slangs found in the Ant Man Movie directed by Peyton Reed, produced by Wald Disney Studios Motion Pictures, 2015. The main object of the research was to find out themeaning of English slangs found in the Ant Man Movie and classify themdepending on its characteristics of English Slangs types. This research used a qualitative method. In Classifying the English Slangs, researchers used theory from Coleman that classifying English slangs into seven; English Slang changes in meaning, English Slang changes in function, English Slang change in form, English Slang created by abbreviation, English Slangchanges in spelling, Slangs loans and Slangs from imitating sound. Through this research, researchers found forty English Slangs in the Ant Man Movie; fourteen English Slangs created by changes in meaning, two English Slangs created by changes in, twelve English Slangs created by changes, five English Slangs created by abbreviation, seven English Slangs created bychanges in spelling, four English Slangs loans, and two English Slangs are from sound. English slangs are non-register language. It is more acceptable in daily life because it is fresher and simple in use.

Abstract

The pupose of this research is carried out in order to find out how far the influence of society to the students skills in English to the second year students of SMPN 5 Tandun in 2018/2019 academic year is. The library research is applied based on the needs of the books as the sources of the theories and informations, and the field research is applied on the need ofdata from the field, in this case from SMPN 5 Tandun. As the instrument for collection the data, the writer uses test. After getting the data, the next step which is done by the writer is analizing it by using the statistical analysis. The students‟ skill English are also influenced by other factors, like the students‟ motivation, interest, aptitute, the method applied by the teachers in teaching, the school facilities, the family factor, etc. After finishing collecting and analyzing the data it has been known that there is a significant influence of society to the students‟ skill to the second year students of SMPN 5 Tandun. It means that the hypothesis of this research is accepted.
