Abstract

The article presents the idea of professional development activities from some views to enhance EFL teachers‟ quality and to meet the changing needs of the students which can be best implemented by EFL teachers. Some considerations about professional development activities to be reminder are 1) a match to existing teacher needs, 2) a match to existing school needs, 3) teacher involvment in the activities, 4) active participation opportunities, 5) long-term engangement and 6) high-quality instructors.The contribution will give EFL teachers views about continuous professional development reflect which upon pertinent common goals effectively. In sum up, the professional development activities for EFL teacherwill maintain a vital and critical role in the development of quality of teachers.

Abstract

This study is aimed at revealing the systems of Utetoto Verbal Sentences. Specifically, this study is concerned on: (i) describing the basic sentence patterns of Utetoto Verbal Sentences, (ii) finding out the similarities and differences between English and Utetoto Verbal Sentences, and (iii) predicting some difficulties of Utetoto Students in learning English. This research was descriptive qualitative research. Robert’s (1958) model was used as research design in describing English. At the first, a need analysis was done in the method of describing the basic sentence patterns, mentioning the main patterns of verbal sentences and other patterns of verbal sentences with some native speakers of Utetoto as main informants who stay in Tanah Utetoto. Based on the result of analysis, it was found that there are many different systems between Utetoto Verbal Sentences and English ones. The basic sentence patterns of Utetoto Verbal Sentences are: Noun Phrase (NP), Verbal Phrase (VP), Adjective Phrase (AP), Numeral Phrase (NuP), Adverb Phraes (AdP), and Prepositional Phrase (PP). By contrasting both languages, it found the differences between the native language and the target language. Based on the differences between Utetoto and English system, it can be predicted some difficulties of Utetoto students in learning English.

Abstract

The research is based on phenomenona occurs in a multilingual community that tend to use more than one language in communication. The phenomenon is called code transfer which does not only happens in informal situation but also in formal situation, like in speech of university leader, especially the head of Mahaputera Muhammad Yamin University Solok, West Sumatera. The purpose of this study was to analyze the reasons of using code switching by the leader of university in their speech during the graduation ceremony. This research used descriptive qualitative methods, where speech script was a source to be studied and analyzed. Based on the analysis, it was found that the tendency of using code switching was due to the educational background that was taken by the university leader, and also several other reasons related to language habits in multilingual community itself.

Abstract

The basic components of micro teaching skill is the basic skill to students who are going to be a teacher. Micro teaching is a course to practice teaching in faculty of teacher training and education.The research was done at third years students in 4 Department of FKIP in Universitas pasir pengaraian ( English Study Program, Math, Physic and Biology) .The methodology of this research is qualitative research. The researcher uses the teacher instrumentation assessments (IPKG 2). From the analysis, it can be concluded that the basic components of micro teaching skill at third years students of FKIP in Universitas Pasir Pengaraian is in good category or in 68,75%.

Abstract

In the process of the learning activities, every student has different efforts in learning English and it would give different progress of their speaking skill. In this research, the purpose was to know students speaking skill through micro teaching practice. The data took from their video documentation. The research design is descriptive qualitative research while the sample was sixth semester students of English Study Program in 2016/2017 academic year. The result of the research was from their performance in micro teaching practice was in average category, the data showed that 78% were average level.

Abstract

This Research was classroom action research (CAR) to overcome the existing problem on the field and explained whether the KWL strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension in Narrative Text. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 8 Rambah. There were two cycles consisted of four meetings: plan, action, obvservation and reflection. Researcher used four instruments in collecting data: test, observation checklist, field notes and interview. Analyzed by qualitatively and quantitatively. The finding showed an improvement in students’ reading comprehension of narrative text the average students’ score in basic test 42%, cycle 1 was 50,8% and cycle 2 was 72,51%.

Abstract

The focus of this paper is on learner autonomy (henceforth, LA) in language classroom setting. LA is an engagement in a process of reflective practice in learning process. In what follows, I will first discuss concisely the concept of LA; next I will briefly discuss the work of possible differences among attributes affecting LA; finally, I will elaborate LA for language classroom, and will suggest how LA might be conceptualized according to LA principles. In the language classroom, LA is usually associated either with students or teachers. Moreover, LA as it stands for, generally considered as encouraging students to become more autonomous. Following Nasri, Dastjerdy, Rasekh and Amirian (2015), however, I suggest that gender, background, and experience as a valuable feature contribution to promote LA.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between learning style and students‟ reading achievement at Senior High School in Kepenuhan Sub-district. This study was a correlational research design. The respondents of this study were the second year students of Senior High School in Kepenuhan Sub-district. Total sampling was used. Thetotal sample of this study was 84 students. Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS) 21 version was used to analyze the data. After analyzing by using correlation, the finding showed that there was relationship between learning style and students‟ reading achievement at Senior High School in Kepenuhan Sub-district in which Pearson correlation is .409 (4.09%). Then, p= .000 (0.00%) which probability <0.05. Thus, hypothesis alternative stated that there was significant relationship between learning style and students‟ reading achievement at Senior High School in Kepenuhan Sub-district was accepted.

Abstract

English is a Foreign Language as a subject that has been studying since elementary level. However, there were found minimal skill competence of speaking in Engish. Thus, it needs improvement both from the media system used and the appropriate strategy for the English course as a general basic course in particular in the Faculty of Computer Science. Technology can be an alternative as the media in education prosess. One of these media is Voice of America Special English Education Report. Basicaly, there are several benefits of using this media such as listening; while they are listening VOA automatically they are studying how to pronounce something; another skill is reading and writing skill because this media supported by running text. Thus, automatically this media includes four language skill in English. The subject of this research is Computer science students second semester. The purpose of this research is to find out whether the use of VOA Special English Education report can improve students’ speaking skill in English. The data was collected by applying the speaking test which used rubric scoring. The method of this research is classroom action research. There were two cycles of the test as comparative the improvement of students’ speaking skill in using VOA Special English Education Report . The result of this research that there is significant improvment of using VOA Special English Education Report. The score of the first cycle is 56,8 and the second cyce is 64,8. It means that there is increasing of the score speaking test by using the media VOA Special Engilsh Education Report.
