Abstract

The research aimed to analyze students’ need to learn English phonology at fifth semester students of English Study Program of University of Pasir Pengaraian. Phonology is one of lessons that difficult to learn, because the students must concentrate and focus to learn it. To make students more understand in learning English phonology, the researcher need to know what students feeling before studying phonology and what their wish in learning it. Because of that reason, the researcher tried to analyze students’ need in English phonology. There were two types of instrument to gather the data; questionnaire and interview. The total students in this research are 42 students, which consist of 22 students in class A, and 20 students in class B. The researcher analyzed students answer based on interview. The finding was students need lecturer to be patient to teach them in English phonology, the students need the lecturer explain topic per topic in slowly until they understood, the students need more practice or exercise than theory or discussion.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the result of the study: the ability of the fifth yearstudents of English Study Program in writing. This study is a descriptive research that has only one variable that is the students’ ability in paraphrasing paragraphs is evaluated by giving the students a test in form of writing a paraphrase. This research was conducted at English Study Program FKIP-UNRI. The participants of the research were the students of the fifth semester of English Study Program of FKIP-UNRI. The researcher gathered the data in form of writing test (writing paraphrase).

Abstract

This research is a book review of questions in "Let's Talk" text book published by Pakar Raya which is used as a textbook for all second years ofjunior high school in Siak Hulu. The questions in textbook is one aspect that influence in teaching learning process and monitoring students learning. Cognitive domain is an ability that is demanded from students to be mastered because it is absolutely a basic for mastering knowledge and intellectual skills. The aims of this research to find the level of questions in "Let's Talk" text book based on Cognitive domain. There are knowledge questions, comprehension questions, applications questions, analysis questions, synthesis questions and evaluation questions. This research is descriptive research using questionnaire as research instrument.

Abstract

Teaching material is one of crucial part in English Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. Teaching language is related to the teaching culture which has great influence in human life. One better way to introduce students to the real world is through the use of authentic material. Since EFL students get more difficulties in acquire and explore the language, it can help them to experience real-world events in the classroom. Using authentic material enables teacher to modify teaching and learning strategies into a collaborative and interactive student centered learning environment instead of traditional teacher centered. Audio and visual presentation of the authentic material makes teaching and learning condition more interesting. Based on the previous explanation, this paper is focused on the use of authentic material in teaching and learning English in EFL classroom. It also describes how authentic material helps students improve their language skills and motivate them to learn English.

Abstract

A teacher is to understand and have ability to give assessment to his students since this ability plays a very important role in assessing thelearning evaluation. Teacher is also supposed to know its purpose so that he can find out its functions and which kind of assessment will be designed or developed for his students. In addition, this is useful to give the teacher knowledge about his students’ achievement and how to increase it.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate how students’ language in the English Vaganza competition which was organized by the University of PasirPengaraian. The type of research was descriptive quantitative. Researchers used video footage of students’ performance. The research instrument used video recording. Sampling was total sampling. The sample consists of 19 students who follow the impromptu speech competition in EnglishVaganza. The data obtained comes from several raters. The data were taken from the video recording of the students' performances and transcripts from each student itself. The ways to analyze data were collecting data, analyzing data, and display the results of the data analysis itself. In taking the data, the researcher used video recording and raters. In analyzing the data, the researcher used indicators in impromptu speech; say the objectives, composing contents, supporting ideas, adding stories and examples and summarizing key ideas, showing awareness of the listener's needs, speaking clearly, choosing the right vocabulary and information, using tone, speed and word size thinking, complexity of the vocabulary and last showing comfort with the listener. Based on the result of the research, it was concluded that the level of speech impromptu of students in the English Vaganza competition was quite good.

Abstract

This article is intended to provide a foundation, reference and overview of the state of readiness of teachers in considering the application of the new curriculum (Revison of curricullum: KTSP become K-13), as well as provide information on teachers' perceptions of the curriculum. This article is useful for teachers in portrait as well as provides information on the implementation of the curriculum (K-13 and KTSP). The method used in writing this article is to use qualitative and descriptive study of literature. Data obtained through the study of literature and observation using a structured interview to sample some of the teachers at the elementary school level, junior and senior high schools in Rokan Hulu used randomize sampling. After re-analyzed, the use of curriculum in Rokan Hulu found that more teachers agree with the new curriculum (K13) based on the existing system in K-13, but they were found to in RokanHulu itself is more efficient when using the last curricullum (KTSP) because the school facilities and good infrastructure does not support the implementation of the K-13 runs perfectly. Starting from the statement "if you want to K13, must complete infrastructure and support; develop what is there not to upset or partial". Of this paper is known that the curriculum in 2013 demand for teachers at all levels of schools in the district RokanHulu, but in practice advice and inadequate infrastructure that does not yet support the implementation of K13. Thus the authors recommend to education observers to gradually complete infrastructure for the implementation of K13 running properly.

Abstract

To improve students’ reading interest, a comprehensive research was needed.The purpose of this research was to implement Cooperative Integrated Reading Composition(CIRC)on reading interest.This research was quasi experimental research. It was nonequivalent control group design; post-test only design. The treatments were only done in experimental class while control class was taught as usual. Regarding to population selection, total sampling was used. It consisted of two classes. They were thirty nine students. Control class was taught by small group discussion and experimental class was taught by Cooperative Integrated Reading Composition. Reading comprehension test, Questionnaire, and interview were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed by using independent t-test. The finding was students who were taught by cooperativeintegrated reading composition (CIRC) had better scores (comprehension well) thanthose who were taught by small group discussion. However the reading interest of students were still low that can be seen from the time spent for reading and kinds of book read.

Abstract

This article reports on a study intended to explain whether context clues and punctuations could better improve the students‟ reading skills at grade XII MS 4 of SMA Negeri Plus of Riau Province and to explain what factors that change it. This research was conducted through a classroom action research at SMA Negeri Plus of Riau Province, in 2017/2018 academic year. This classroom action research consisted of two cycles constituting 3 meetings for each cycle. Participants of the research were 25 of students of the grade XII MS 4 of SMA Negeri Plus Riau Province.The data were collected by using observation checklists, field notes, and test. Qualitative data were analyzed by data managing, reading or memoing, describing, classifying, interpreting. Quantitative data were analyzed by percentage (score of reading skills), Matrix and graph.The result of this research shows that the students‟ reading skills increased in each cycles. In the first cycle, the percentage of students‟ reading skills was 80.60%. But, the result was unsatisfactory yet. In the second cycle, the increase of students‟ reading skills was 90.08%. It means that there is an increase of students‟ reading skills in second cycles. In conclusion, the teaching of context clues and punctuations skills could increase the students‟ reading skills in understanding reading text. There were some factors that influence the changing of the students‟ reading skills by implementing context clues and punctuations, namely;(a) Time allocation in implementing of the context clues and punctuations.(b) Students‟ understanding in implementing the context clues and punctuations in reading skills. (c) Classroom atmosphere while the context clues and punctuations were implemented.

Abstract

Based on the result of the preliminary study, it was found that the students at SMAN 1 Rambah Hilir and SMAN 3 Rambah Hilir werelow score and not interested reading class. The students tendedto be passive inlearning process. Their reading comprehension mastery was low and they needed a long time to understand a reading text, even short text. The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of reciprocal teaching strategy toward students‟ motivation and their reading ability at senior high school in Rambah Hilir District Rokan Hulu regency. The design of this research was a quasi-experimental research with pre-test and post-test procedure. The data were collected through test and questionnaire. The total population was 61 students‟ of SMA Negeri 1 Rambah Hilir and 41 students‟ of SMA Negeri 3 Rambah Hilir. This research applied a random sampling technique to get samples. Then, the data were analyzed by using t-test method to find out whether there is significant difference between the experimental group taught by using Reciprocal teaching strategy as a treatment, and the control group taught conventionally. The research result, the writer found that significant probabilities was higher than 0.05 (> 0.05) in both paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test, it meantthat there is significant different on students reading comprehension in pre-test both classes and in post-test of both classes, and there is significant different on students‟ motivation before and after treatment of experimental class. Besides, the value of eta square of students‟ was 0.97 at SMAN 1 Rambah Hilir and 0.96 at SMAN 3 Rambah Hilir. It showed it gave significant effect toward students‟ motivation and their reading ability
