Abstract

The goals of this study are to: (1) specify the various types of code-mixing; and (2) discuss the factors that affect code-mixing. The descriptive analysis method is the one that is employed. The procedures involved in gathering data are viewing, creating scripts, identifying, categorizing, and analyzing the discussions seen in the video, as well as drawing conclusions about the findings. Muysken's notion of code-mixing served as the foundation for this investigation. There are three types of code-mixing, including insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization, according to Muysken's theory (2000:3; 2006: 152-153). The analysis's findings revealed that Alternation (81 data), Insertion (78 data), and Congruent Lexicalization are the three most common types of code-mixing (28 data). The three types of code-mixing were examined using the qualitative descriptive methodologies. Seven additional explanations for code-mixing have been established based on Hoffmann theory (1991). Speaking about a specific subject, quoting another person, emphasizing something (expressing solidarity), interjecting (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors), using repetition for clarification, wanting to make the speech's content clear for the listener, and expressing group identity are all examples of these behaviors. Repetition used for clarification is the most frequently used justification for code-mixing.

Abstract

This study discusses the naming pattern of plant shops in Cihideung Village in terms of Linguistic Landscape (LL). LL is a discipline that examines the use of language in public spaces. The purpose of this study is to describe the form and explain the informative function and symbolic function (LL function) in the naming of plant shops in Cihideung Village. The research method used is descriptive qualitative method which produces photographic data from the results of documentation and direct observation. The research object was taken from the names of plant shops located in Cihideung Village. The signs present in the photographic data will then be analyzed using the Landry and Bourhis (1997) model of linguistic landscape theory which divides LL into six levels, namely microlinguistic analysis, language code type analysis, language behavior analysis, psychological analysis, socio-cultural analysis. psychological, and sociological analysis. The conclusion results indicate that the plant shop in Cihideung Village is dominated by shop names that explicitized the type of product using the word florist/florist/flower stall and most of them are composed of Indonesian (monoligual) with the type of lingual unit, namely phrases. Meanwhile, the name of the shop which does not explicitized the type of product is dominated by the identity of the shop owner's name which is composed of Indonesian (monolingual) and in the form of a phrase.

Abstract

There has been much discussion about how errors affect students' language proficiency, but few research have specifically examined teacher errors. The error that is passed down from the teacher, meantime, is one of the major reasons why students make mistakes. In order to avoid mistakes when instructing in elementary schools about the ideal time for pupils to acquire and learn a foreign language, EFL teachers must take into account the habit that students have of mimicking their teacher's voice production. This study investigates the pronunciation errors of EFL teachers, in particular to find out the form and causes of pronunciation errors in the vowels produced by the teacher. The participant of this study was a selected English teacher from an elementary school in Pandeglang who was invited to pronounce 62 English words. Teachers are also asked to fill out a questionnaire to find out what external factors are thought to trigger errors. The findings illustrate that teachers produce various forms of pronunciation errors in English vowels. The causes of errors lie in interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer, pronunciation differences between graphemes and sounds, hypercorrection, and word similarity. External factors were also investigated, which included educational background and teacher's lack of English practice. This study suggests that elementary EFL teachers in Indonesia should improve their pronunciation by practicing frequently and having intensive pronunciation training to teach better English to their students.

Abstract

This study focused on advertising as an object of business discourse, revealed through grammatical structures and pictorial images in the frameworks. Eight advertisements of beverages and financial institutions were items of the analysis. The Transitivity system of English operated as the concept of processing the texts. Thus, the application of Transitivity informed the calibration of textual frequencies of the string of words in the advertising plates. The researchers observed three perspectives, where advertising elements correlated with business measures. These were: negotiation through communication; conviction to patronise goods and services; and generation of cash, being the pivot of business firms. Budweiser® employed the features of the crown – The king is here, Guinness Gold® utilised glamorous merriment – Savour the flavour, and Coca-Cola® deployed code-mixing – Gbe bottle e!, to negotiate patronisation of goods and services. Skills’ acquisitions, provision of loans, and personal exaltation were subjects, persuading viewers towards consumption in the Zenith®, Goldberg® and Coca-Cola advertisements. Besides, love, culture and religion, illuminated in StanbicIBTC®, UBA®, and Ecobank® were axioms of communications. The thrust of these strategies was to encourage readers to consume the advertised services, which can lead to cash generation for institutions. As a neglect of advertising might be detrimental to business, this study suggested that the propagation of advertisements en mass might heighten business capacities, which could create different grammatical understanding for discourse analysts.

Abstract

The recent study aims at investigating how far the ESP learners’ ability and the strategies they employed in mastering the Listening Comprehensions skills of the TOEFL test. The descriptive research design focused on content analysis was applied to gather the data taken by 25 students as participants of the study. In order to see the learners’ ability in Listening Comprehension (LC) skills, the 50 questions of Listening Comprehension Test were given through the Pre-Test and Post-Test during one semester course from the Longman Introductory Course For The TOEFL Test (Green Book) by Debora Philips (2004). The observation and the test were the instruments in obtaining the data needed. The data was then analyzed based on the 3 (three) major skills in Listening Comprehension part A, B, and C covered 12 sub-skills or the strategies applied. The result of the ESP learners’ ability in Listening Comprehension (LC) was moderately revealed and they were in the level of ‘Low Intermediate’ level in general. However, there was still few students had not improved yet. Moreover, in Part B (skill 7 – 9) gained the highest scores percentage among two other skills, followed by skill 10 – 12 in Part C Long Talks. Meanwhile, Part A (skill 1 – 6) achieved the lowest scores’ percentage in implementing the strategies, specifically in the skill of 4, 2 and 1 (Passives, Negatives, and Restatements) in sequent. Thus, it is suggested that students need to do more exercises on TOEFL Listening Part A suggested strategies by Philips (2004). Moreover, with the advanced of technology, learners can improve their English Listening skills by accessing the free online TOEFL courses from experts in the internet besides doing more drillings on YouTube channels and Podcasts.
