Abstract

Globalization spreads fast around the world put English language become a-must-have skill. Almost all people use English in the teaching learning process, communication, transferring soft skills and hard skills, showing social status in communities, business transactions, political purposes, even on the some medicine instruction, food ingredients, mechanic usage instruction, and many more. The language is used to various purposes, as for online and offline communication. During this corona virus pandemic, English as a Medium of Instruction is implemented mostly in online educational institutions. English as Medium of Instruction is also applied to any subjects in universities in non-English speaking countries. This research focuses on the implementation of English as Medium of Instruction for communication and sustainability in 4.0 era for non-English lecturers in a private university in Indonesia. The survey questionnaires used online link was randomly sent to 53 lecturers as informants. The aim of using online link to support data gathering is to ensure all information required can be collected on time, faster and efficiently. The data was quantitatively presented and qualitatively analyzed. The data collected were information on how essential English related to English of Medium of Instruction implementation for communication & sustainability in 4.0 era, including the challenges faced by non-English lecturers in fully English as Medium of Instruction classrooms. The findings of this research provide updated information regarding the learning needs and the effective teaching-learning method in implementing EMI for communication and sustainability in 4.0 era.

Abstract

This study carried out an intelligibility of English pronunciation by Thai students. The objectives are to explain the intelligibility of ILE in the pronunciation of English and to identify the typical kind of English sounds which are delivered by the students in Thailand. The data included Thai English words gathered by using participant observation. The result showed: (1) the level of intelligibility of ILE have perceived intelligible (50.6%) and their unperceived as much as 49.4% in the English sounds pronunciation by ThaiE, (2) the typical kind of English sounds produced by ThaiE can be seen from the pronunciation of consonant sounds, vowels and diphthong sounds. For example, the vowel sounds (a, ׀, i ə, Λ, a, ɑ, ɒ, o, U, u) are typically sounded by ThaiE’s pronunciation is understood well and intelligible by Indonesian Leaners of English (ILE).

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the principle of language politeness in the discourse of husband-wife dialogue in the village community. The sources of data in this study were the husband and wife community of the Tonronge Village, Baranti District, Sidenreng Rappang Regency. This type of research used qualitative descriptive research to clearly describe the form of the principle of language politeness. Data collection techniques consisted of observation, recording, tapping techniques, and documentation. The results showed that the principle of language politeness in society in the discourse of husband-wife dialogue in the community reflects the implementation of the cultural values of "siri" as a central value. The use of special vocabulary, such as taalani (please get it), ta (yours), iye (yes), ki (you) shows politeness in language.

Abstract

This study attempted to examine the EFL students’ Basic English Pronunciation (BEP) at the first semester of the English study program, the State University of Timor. It was aimed at finding out the mastery of the students’ ability towards the Basic English Pronunciation (BEP), to what extent do the students still find difficulties to pronounce the basic English words, and to what level do the students' mastery level of pronunciation categorized? The method applied in this research was a descriptive quantitative method that employed the syntax of mathematical operation to investigate the properties of data collection (Walliman, 2005). The instrument was a list of 24 numbers of groups of Voice Consonants and Unvoiced Consonants of Basic English Pronunciation taken from “Improve Your English Pronunciation and Learn over 500 Commonly Mispronounced Words”, meanwhile, 26 students were chosen from the freshmen students of English Study Program (ESP) to be the subject of this present study. The result showed that the students’ ability in pronouncing the Basic English words was fair. Particularly, the students mostly had the ‘Enough’ level of ability at the four elements of supra-segmental as such: stress, intonation, voice quality and gesture. Specifically, at this ‘Enough level’, there were 16 students (61.5%) of ‘Stress’ element, 17 students (65.3%) of ‘Intonation’ element, 13 students (50.0%) of ‘Voice Quality’ and ‘Gestures’ as part of Segmental element was 16 students (61.5%). Meanwhile, at the ‘Rhythm’ element, most students (53.8% = 14 students) showed the ‘Less’ ability in this element and only 12 (46.1%) categorized at the level of ‘Enough’’. Otherwise, there were no students in the ‘Bad’ level category. However, few students still encountered difficulties in Segmental element (Voice Quality) and Supra-segmental parts such as words’ stressing, intonation, rhythm, and gestures respectively.

Abstract

Confession contributes to the effectiveness and motivation both students and teachers. It invites the students’ participation in determining the good technique for the best teacher. This research deals with students’ confession toward teacher technique in teaching based on gender. The objective of the research is try to elaborate how is the students’ confession on different gender, male and female in teaching. This research analyzed qualitatively where the subject takes from Senior High School 3 Palopo, 40 samples take which is confessing 10 male and 13 female teachers. After doing an interview, found that there are some confessions toward Gender teacher technique in teaching, they are both male and female get positive confessions, Male teachers get 36 confessions with good managing confessing (9) is the highest where correlated to the topic is a few or only 2 stdents confessed. Female teachers get 39 confessions with good managing confessing about 7 students assumed it and it is the highest. Furthermore, motivated confession only 2 confessing, and the last is female teachers get higher confession than male.

Abstract

Need analysis has become part of ADDIE model in developing materials for language learning. This research aims at examining the importance of need analysis as the initial focal step prior to the development of materials for Speaking for Academic Purpose. It is also investigating the reliability of ADDIE model prior to developing teaching material, specifically the ‘analyze’ stage. This research is typically a qualitative descriptive approach which conducted by using survey method. The instruments are students questionnaires and experts questionnaires created in online google form. There are totally 68 higher education students consist of thirty-three (33) seventh semester students and thirty-five (35) of fifth semester students taking the role as the respondents. The experts questionnaires are distributed to six lecturers who have the same interest in materials development and teach English for academic Purposes. The most result showed that 40 and 21 respondents consider ‘very important’ and ‘important’ which shows that 90% of all respondents has similar opinion on the importance of textbook for the course of Speaking for Academic Purpose availability. All of the expert-respondents consider that it is important to develop materials for the course of Speaking for Academic purpose, shown by the dominant answers of ‘yes’Thus, by implementing ADDIE model, the researchers are convinced to develop materials for Speaking for Academic Purpose for students of English Education Study Program in Nusa Nipa University.

Abstract

This study aims to examine students' critical thinking patterns in writing argumentative paragraphs using the argumentative patterns developed by Stephen Toulmin. This study used qualitative approach. To collect the data, the instrument used was students’ writing on the Academic Writing class. Hence, the third semester students were involved as the participants. Then, the collected data were analyzed focusing on the Stephen Toulmin Theory which divides the argument into six stages; claim, ground, warrant, backing, qualifier, and rebuttal. The result of this study revealed that by focusing on Stephen Toulmin's argumentative theory, students could hone their ability to think critically. This is because the elements on Stephen Toulmin’s theory were proved to strengthen students’ writing.

Abstract

The aims of this study are:(1) to identify the intention of Jokowi’s expression during his speech in front of audiences from various representative states and (2) to describe Jokowi’s utterances seen from mood variation in the perspective of SFL. This study is in the domain of descriptive and qualitative. The primary data are taken from Youtube about Jokowi’s speech at APEC ON PEC CEO SUMMIT 2014. The secondary data covers the social backgrounds and personality of Jokowi. The data analysis is carried out by applying SFL theory of Pragmatics and Discourse. The result of this study shows that the function of Jokowi’s expression is systematized as in mood variation. From the data of clauses showing expressive utterance, it can be explained that the characteristics of Jokowi’s utterances reflect his personality based on the context of utterances. Moreover, based on mood variation, the use of finite can be seen from Auxillary, pronoun, and modality. These components explain Jokowi’s joys and thanks to the audience.

Abstract

This study is aimed at describing the implementation of flipped classroom learning model and analyzing the impact of this learning model on students’ satisfaction on Grammar class. This study was conducted at Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia. The participants of this study were 48 students of English Education study program who enroll Intermediate Class. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. Data were obtained from observation, questionnaire and interview. Observation technique was used to gain information on how flipped classroom learning model implemented. Questionnaire consists of 13 statements an participants may respond on the level of strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree and strongly disagree to gain information about impact of flipped classroom learning model toward students’ satisfaction. Interview was administered to strengthen the data of questionnaire. The results of this study were flipped classroom learning model has been well-implemented in teaching grammar. This learning mode broke the physical limitation between students and lecturers. Another result of this study was the students satisfy with the learning process carried out using flipped classroom. It was found that flipped classroom was easy to implement, promote self-directed learning and improve grammar knowledge. It can be suggested that flipped classroom learning model is an alternative mode incorporating education with technology advancement.
