Abstract

Law students, especially those specializing in international law, encounter significant challenges regarding their critical reading abilities. Critical reading necessitates active engagement, compelling readers to think critically and employ various skills to identify key concepts, draw conclusions, make connections, anticipate purposes, analyze arguments, consider diverse perspectives, and evaluate ideas effectively. This research investigates the role of critical reading skills in enhancing the academic competence of law students within the context of international law. It employs a qualitative research design, utilizing case studies, interviews, and focus group discussions with fifth-semester students at the Faculty of Law, Muslim University of Indonesia. The findings reveal that critical reading skills significantly improve students' abilities to analyze complex legal texts, such as treaties and court decisions, by enabling them to identify key arguments, underlying biases, and contextual nuances. Structured frameworks, such as the SQ3R method and Legal Case-Based Reading (LCbR), are shown to foster deeper engagement with materials and facilitate the application of legal principles to real-world scenarios. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of exploring diverse perspectives, particularly those of marginalized groups, in enriching students' understanding of social and cultural implications. Ultimately, this research contributes to legal education reform by emphasizing the necessity of integrating critical reading skills into law curricula to better prepare students for the challenges of professional practice.

Abstract

Peer feedback is frequently studied in English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) writing. Many studies focused on the effect of peer feedback on ESL/EFL students’ writing ability. However, limited studies have examined non-English education students’ perceptions of peer feedback. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate non-English students’ experiences implementing peer feedback activities and their perceptions of peer feedback activity in their writing. This study involved 157 students from 3 different major or study programs of 2 faculties. The participants are students who have just undertaken a general English course. The data were collected through an online questionnaire to examine students’ perceptions of peer feedback activity and semi-structured interviews to draw more pictures of students’ experiences implementing peer feedback activity. The results showed that students had overall high/positive perceptions of peer feedback activity. The majority of the students agree that doing peer feedback is beneficial; has improved their critical thinking; has made them learn a lot from their friends’ mistakes; has facilitated their involvement in social interaction; and has enhanced their awareness of errors in their writing.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of Case-Based Learning (CBL) on students' writing skills in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) through the Systematic Literature Review method of research published in the last ten years in Scopus, DOAJ, and Google Scholar databases. The results show that CBL effectively improves writing skills, especially in the aspects of coherence, grammar, and paragraph organization. By engaging students in real-world scenarios, this method encourages logical and systematic organization of arguments and develops critical thinking skills, creativity, and analytical abilities. The integration of CBL with the Process Writing Approach (PWA) strengthens the text drafting and revision process, while peer review activities contribute to improving grammatical accuracy. In addition, the CBL method showed flexibility across different educational levels, improving negotiation text writing skills in vocational schools and analytical ability in higher education. Compared to traditional methods, CBL encourages deep engagement with the material and the application of theory into practice, although its success largely depends on the quality of the cases, the competence of the facilitators, and institutional support. Challenges encountered include the need for additional guidance for students who struggle to grasp abstract concepts and the provision of adequate infrastructure for technology integration. Future research is recommended to explore the long-term impact of CBL on retention of writing skills, its effectiveness across different language proficiency levels, as well as the role of digital technology in supporting the learning process. With adequate institutional support and comprehensive implementation strategies, CBL can be an effective and sustainable method in improving writing skills in EFL contexts.

Abstract

The Effect Of Total Physical Response (TPR) Method On Students’ Speaking Skill at Elementary School. The main problem of this study is the lack of students' speaking ability, especially in English, so the researchers sought ways to improve students' pronunciation accuracy and vocabulary after applying the Total Psychal Response (TPR) method at Lab School SD Unismuh Makassar. This study used a quantitative quasi-experimental design by applying the TPR method to see its effect on students' speaking ability. The procedure of this research includes pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The samples in this study were second grade students of Lab School SD Unismuh Makassar consisting of two classes which became the population. This research used total sampling technique. The instruments of this research are speaking tests and recording devices. So in this study, speaking test was used as a test instrument to collect data. Based on the results of the study, the pre-test score in the experimental class in pronunciation accuracy was (22.72) and the post-test score was (65.90). and the pre-test score on vocabulary was (24.99) and the post-test score was (76.51). Meanwhile, the pre-test score in the control class in pronunciation accuracy was (24.99) and the post-test score was (33.33). and the score on vocabulary was (21.96) and the post-test score was (42.42). Based on hypothesis testing, it shows that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected based on hypothesis testing. The results showed that in the experimental class there was a significant increase from pre-test to post-test using the TPR method compared to the results of the control class using the TBLT method. So, it can be concluded that the use of TPR method can affect students' speaking ability in terms of accuracy of pronunciation and vocabulary at the laboratory school of SD Unismuh Makassar.

Abstract

This study explores the emotional and psychological journey of Otto Anderson, the main character in the 2022 film A Man Called Otto, through Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology framework. The film portrays Otto as a grieving widower who undergoes a significant psychological transformation after the loss of his beloved wife. Employing a qualitative method and textual analysis, this research identifies five major Adlerian concepts in Otto’s character: inferiority complex, striving for superiority, lifestyle, creative self, and social interest. The findings reveal how Otto’s rigid behavior, emotional withdrawal, and repeated suicide attempts reflect a deep-seated inferiority complex and unresolved trauma. However, through interactions with new neighbors and acts of communal care, Otto gradually redirects his despair into purpose-driven actions, thus activating his creative self and developing a renewed sense of social belonging. This study not only contributes to character analysis using Adlerian psychology but also highlights the role of film as a reflective medium for mental health discourse, especially in portraying grief, resilience, and social reintegration.

Abstract

Language variation in specific social settings, known as register, is a vital area of sociolinguistics that reflects the dynamic nature of communication. This study investigates the types of registers and their linguistic forms used in Shopee Live, a real-time e-commerce platform that enables direct interaction between sellers and buyers. Unlike previous studies that focused on static online platforms, this research explores the spontaneous and interactive nature of live streaming commerce. A descriptive qualitative method was employed to analyze the utterances from four skincare online shops during Shopee Live sessions. The data were collected through observation, transcription, and interviews, and validated using source and technique triangulation. The analysis applied Martin Joos’s theory of register types and Halliday’s theory of situational context. The findings reveal two types of register used: consultative (17 data) and casual (19 data), with the casual register being more dominant. Consultative registers typically appeared in semi-formal buyer-seller exchanges and used nouns and verbs to deliver product information professionally. Casual registers were characterized by informal expressions, simple noun phrases, and emotional or persuasive language aimed at engaging viewers. The dominance of the casual register reflects the sellers' strategy to build closeness with buyers while maintaining informative content through the consultative register. This study highlights how sellers adjust their linguistic choices to suit the communicative needs of the Shopee Live environment, balancing professionalism and friendliness to optimize buyer engagement.

Abstract

In blended learning environments, learner identity construction and the factors influencing it have received less attention than the extensive study on language learner identity in face-to-face classroom settings. This critical review paper critically summarizes and reviews a qualitative case study on learner identity construction in blended learning environments through collaborative writing presented in Chen et al.’s (2022) study. Their research addresses a significant gap in second language acquisition by exploring identity construction across online and offline contexts. Through class observations, recordings, platform logs, and interviews, the researchers identified distinct learner identities in face-to-face sessions (Group Leader, Spokesperson, Summarizer, and Follower) and online writing (Industrious Contributor, Prudent Reader, Procrastinator, and Cooperative Writer). The study reveals that identity construction stems from interactions between personal factors (language proficiency, personality traits) and contextual elements (peer dynamics, assigned roles, teacher supervision). In this critical review paper, the researchers analyse the study's methodological approach, findings, and theoretical contributions, highlighting strengths (comprehensive exploration, data triangulation) and limitations (small sample size, lack of demographic diversity). Chen et al.'s study contributes valuable insights into the dynamic nature of learner identity in contemporary educational settings and offers practical implications for curriculum design in blended environments.
