Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic writing has gained increasing attention in recent years, offering innovative tools that assist in enhancing the quality and efficiency of English academic writing. This systematic literature review aims to explore the current landscape of AI applications in English academic writing by analyzing peer-reviewed journal articles published in English. The review focuses on identifying the key AI tools and the types of AI program employed, their contribution on academic writing, and the implications for students and educators. The study synthesizes findings from a comprehensive selection 108 of articles, highlighting trends in AI-assisted writing, such as grammar and paraphrasing. The review also describe the ethical considerations surrounding AI use in academia, including issues of academic integrity and plagiarism. By providing a detailed overview of existing research, this research contributes to the understanding of how AI is transforming English academic writing and offers insights for future researchand practical applications in educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the turn-taking mechanisms in the animated movie Elemental (2023). The main focus is on how the characters in the movie apply strategies of taking the turn, holding the turn, and yielding the turn in their dialogues. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach and applies the theory of turn-taking by Stenström (1994). The data were collected through transcriptions of the film’s dialogue, which were then classified according to types of turn-taking mechanisms. The analysis revealed a total of 76 turn-taking occurrences, with “taking the turn” being the most dominant strategy with total 43 occurrences. These findings indicate that the characters in Elemental tend to hold their speaking turns in order to convey important or emotional information. This study contributes to the field of discourse analysis in the context of animated media, which, although fictional, presents realistic communication interactions.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the author's worldview in Perahu Kertas, a novel by Dewi Lestari, using a qualitative approach within the framework of genetic structuralism. The analysis focuses on three main aspects: (1) the socio-cultural conditions depicted in the novel, particularly the characters’ interactions with their social environment; (2) societal perspectives on work, social status, and the conflict between parental expectations and individual aspirations; and (3) the author’s worldview, which highlights the struggles of young graduates navigating between securing a stable job for survival and pursuing their dreams for the sake of idealism. The findings demonstrate that the novel reflects the realities of Indonesian society, particularly the challenges faced by young individuals as they balance their ambitions with external pressures.

Abstract

This study explores the English language anxiety experienced by Javanese postgraduate female students. It highlights the influence of social, cultural, and gender factors on language anxiety. Using a qualitative approach with thematic analysis, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with a total of seven students from the English Language Education postgraduate program at Universitas Negeri Malang. The results indicate that there are three main sources of language anxiety: fear of making mistakes due to a culture of shyness, anxiety when speaking in public due to a culture of avoiding confrontation, and lack of preparation in using English in academic contexts. Moreover, Javanese cultural values such as etiquette (tata krama), politeness, harmony (rukun), and gender roles emphasizing politeness have been shown to influence female students' anxiety in using English. Students also used and shared various strategies to cope with anxiety, such as building self-confidence, maintaining a positive mindset, continuing to practice, and creating a comfortable learning environment. This study also highlights the importance of a learning approach that is aware of students' cultural backgrounds in creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment, such as avoiding negative judgment and monotonous learning.

Abstract

This study examines the role of subordinate clauses as adjuncts in complex sentences from the "Living" category of Vogue Magazine articles published February 5–6, 2025. The study is motivated by the need to understand how these clauses contribute to the meaning and structure of sentences, particularly in written media, which often uses detailed and descriptive language. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study analyzed 48 complex sentences from three articles. The subordinate clauses were classified according to their functions based on Aarts's (2001) theory. The analysis focused on adjuncts that provide additional information about time, reason, condition, and concession. The findings show that 21 subordinate clauses functioned as adjuncts. Adjuncts of condition were the most common among these, accounting for 38% of the data. They were followed by adjuncts of time (29%), concession (19%), and reason (14%). The results suggest that writers in Vogue frequently use conditional clauses to describe situations, possibilities, or hypothetical scenarios. The data were presented in formal tables, tree diagrams, and descriptive explanations. Using the theory of Aarts (2001) and Brown and Miller’s (1991) tree diagrams to provide structural analysis, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how subordinate clauses, especially adjuncts, function to enrich written text. This study is expected to help students, teachers, and language enthusiasts explore syntactic elements in media texts.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the pedagogical strategies used to teach literary texts in basic education in Timor-Leste, with a focus on less-explored genres such as poetry, fables, traditional tales, prayers (hamulak), and legends. Based on a literature review, various didactic strategies were identified, including the use of audiovisual resources, debate circles, educational games, and reading and retelling texts. These strategies can serve as facilitating tools in Portuguese language instruction, allowing basic education teachers to enrich their pedagogical knowledge and promote the development of essential linguistic skills for students' academic and personal growth in Timor-Leste and the Lusophone community.The research was conducted at Santa Úrsula Basic Education School in Baucau. There were seven (7) participants: one Portuguese language teacher and six (6) students from grades 7, 8, and 9. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, choosing participants with specific knowledge of the phenomenon under investigation. The methods used were observation, document analysis, and semi-structured interviews. The data will be interpreted qualitatively using thematic analysis to understand the impact of these strategies on student learning. The results show that the teacher uses various strategies, including content adaptation and the use of the Tetum language as a support language to overcome linguistic barriers. However, the research identified infrastructure limitations and the need for increased use of interactive methodologies, such as dramatization and games, which students strongly desire. The study concludes that literature teaching in Timor-Leste requires a multilingual and multicultural approach, with cooperation among teachers, schools, and institutions to improve the quality of education.

Abstract

Gamification nowadays has increasingly become chart-topping in education. In addition, game-like learning media can possibly be a precise option to use as a formative assessment tool. This research aims at exploring how teacher utilises Gimkit as a formative assessment tool and how students’ perception on the use of Gimkit as a formative assessment tool in English teaching-learning. This research, further, employs a qualitative case approach. The research subject is the ninth grade involving 28 students. The researcher approaches a semi-structured interview to obtain students’ perception on the use of Gimkit as a formative assement in English teaching-learning. The findings reveal that three steps conducted by the teacher in utilising Gimkit; signing up, creating quizes, and implementing Gimkit as a formative assessment in English teaching-learning. Further, it shows that most students have positive perception on the utilisation of Gimkit as a formative assessment in English teaching-learning. These positive values are coded into; Gimkit is considered as an interesting testing tool, it promotes students’ learning motivation and improves students’ reading skill.

Abstract

A movie, also known as a film or motion picture, is a form of visual art used to entertain audience that can communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, or atmosphere through moving images. The aims of the research are to analyze the world war I story from the main character point of view from “1917”. This thesis aims to show readers how frightening war can be and how it differs from what is portrayed in the media. In order to gather information for this thesis, two ideas from Postcolonial Theory and Characterization as well as the movie "1917" are used. To elaborate on this concept, the writers employs a descriptive qualitative method. The results shows that there are six characters in the movie “1917”. First, he is Lance Corporal Schofield who is the one who going through a lot throughout the film. He experiences mental breakdown, anger, stress and exhaust. Second, Lance Corporal Blake, he has the heroic traits. Third, General Erinmore, a man who shows how orders can be crucial. Fourth, Lieutenant Leslie who shows how war can give sadness, stress and care with each other. Fifth, Colonel Mackenzie also shows how order really crucial in short time. And the last, Lieutenant Joseph Blake, he shows how heartbreaking in World War I when the closes one died, it gives pain, sadness, and stress.

Abstract

This research investigates how students with varying academic achievement levels utilize ChatGPT in the process of writing their undergraduate theses. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study explores the patterns of use, perceptions, motivations, and challenges experienced by high-achieving, mid-achieving, and low-achieving students. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with three participants from Universitas Islam Malang, each representing a distinct academic category. The findings reveal that high-achieving students use ChatGPT critically and selectively to refine coherence and clarity, while mid-achievers rely on it for structural organization and motivational support. In contrast, low-achieving students exhibit a higher degree of dependence, often using ChatGPT as a primary source of content and guidance. Across all groups, ChatGPT is perceived as both a cognitive and emotional aid, though ethical concerns such as originality, over-reliance, and learning depth vary significantly. The research highlights the need for differentiated pedagogical strategies and ethical guidance to ensure responsible AI integration in academic writing.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the verbal and non-verbal signs found in selected VANS advertisements and uncover how these signs communicate messages beyond product promotion. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through observation of two advertisements sourced from VANS’ official website and social media. The signs were analyzed based on Saussure’s (1983) theory of signifier and signified, Barthes’ (1977) concept of denotation and connotation, and Cerrato’s (2012) theory of color. The findings reveal that nonverbal signs, such as images, color schemes, and layout, appear more frequently and carry stronger connotative meanings than verbal signs. These visual elements were found to convey values such as individuality, youth confidence, and cultural belonging. Verbal signs, such as slogans and product descriptions, support the visual messages by reinforcing brand identity. In conclusion, the study finds that VANS advertisements use a combination of symbolic visuals and concise language to create an emotional and cultural connection with the audience, positioning the brand not only as a product but also as a lifestyle representation.
