Abstract

This paper is an attempt to investigate the EFL Iranian learners` use of metadiscourse markers in argumentative writing. The participants of the study are 40 students both male and female. To produce the relevant data, participants were given a pretest of writing ability to check their initial knowledge use of metadiscourse markers. Finally, a post test assessing their writing ability with metadiscourse markers was administered. Writing is a social activity and it is supposed as an important factor of literacy in society despite being mastered in English, students from different cultures and with different first languages seem to be different in developing writing texts.  Metadiscourse markers enable the writers to interact with the readers effectively. The findings revealed that both male and female writers employed more interactive markers than interactional markers due to the fact that both genders inserted transition markers frequently to guide readers through the texts. The findings indicated generally that instruction of metadiscourse markers significantly improves EFL learners’ writing ability of advanced students. The Teachers pay more attention to metadiscourse markers in making EFL curricula. Then they ask for the reinforcement of metadiscourse markers through instruction in EFL courses for the improvement of the learners' writing ability.

Abstract

The present study examined the nature of upper second cycle elementary school students’ critical thinking ability, investigated the correlation of critical thinking skill with learners’ English language achievement and sex, and explored the effect of critical thinking ability on learners' English language achievement. The study involved 99 grade seven students from two government full cycle primary schools in Woldia town. In order to gather data, standardized critical thinking test was administered and semester based learners’ English language achievement scores were used. So, T-test, Pearson product moment correlation and linear regression ware employed to analyze the data. Results of t-test applied to analyze the critical thinking test results revealed that participants’ level of critical thinking skill was very low, and the mean difference between female and male students’ critical thinking score was not statistically significant. However, the result of Pearson product moment correlation coefficient showed that there was a positive significant correlation between the critical thinking ability and English language achievement; whereas, correlation was not found between learners’ critical thinking proficiency and sex. The finding from the linear regression also exposed that learners’ critical thinking proficiency could predict approximately 36 % of learners’ English language achievement. Finally, the researchers made conclusions and forwarded recommendations based on the findings.

Abstract

The general goal of teaching German as a foreign language is that learners can communicate appropriately in writing and orally in German. But in fact this goal can often not be achieved. Many learners in higher education master the German grammar and vocabulary, but they are unable to use German language that matches the social context, because they do not have much pragmatics competence. Pragmatic approach based on the function of language as a communication tool is a study of language by involving various aspects outside the language that are able to provide meaning. Pragmatic competence constitutes a significant factor in determining the success of communication.  In fact, a German language learner in higher education is not only expected to use language and produce utterances which are understandable or grammatically correct, but is also expected to produce utterances which are socioculturally appropriate. However, for students in higher education who learn German as a Foreign Language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache/DaF), the pragmatic competence, which can actually be acquired naturally through social interaction, is quite difficult to acquire due to the limited. On this basis, pragmatics needs to be integrated into German language courses in higher education, which includes pragma linguistics and socio pragmatic. In this regard, this study describes not only the relationship between pragmatics and German as a foreign language, but also this study is an attempt to define its implications in teaching German as foreign language in higher education.
