Abstract

LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) individuals face various social challenges, including discrimination and pressure that affect their ability to build interpersonal relationships, especially with heterosexual individuals. This study aims to explore the friendship dynamics between gay and lesbian individuals and heterosexuals, focusing on social experiences and interactions among young Indonesians. This qualitative research used a phenomenological approach with semi-structured interviews, and the data were thematically analyzed. Three participants, namely gay, lesbian, and heterosexual individuals, were selected through purposive sampling. The results showed that Indonesian society still has difficulty accepting sexual orientations that differ from heterosexuals, with the self-internalized stigma on LGBT individuals further limiting their freedom to express their sexual identity. However, solidarity across sexual orientations is visible, especially among young people, who are more open to sexual diversity, although their attitudes vary. This research emphasizes the importance of social acceptance in reducing discrimination and creating inclusive spaces for LGBT individuals.

Abstract

Underage marriage (UM) has increased globally, including in Indonesia. This was triggered by changes in the Marriage Law (UU) which increased the minimum age for women to marry from 16 to 19 years old and was followed by the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic. This study examines the psychological dynamics of society related to changes in the minimum age limit for marriage from the perspective of Religious Court judges in Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative approach was used by conducting semi-structured interviews with 20 judges from 16 Religious Courts in Indonesia who handle marriage dispensation cases. This process was followed by data collation, coding, classification, and analysed by the deductive thematic technique. As a result, participants conveyed the background of the age limit change and the public's reaction after the change. Some participants stated that the age limit change is not the authority of the court or judge. Some others said that the increase in the minimum age limit for marriage was carried out based on the risks behind underage marriage. These risks are psychological factors, reducing the number of UM cases, preventing divorce, gender equality, and reasons for education, work, and physical condition. Public showed various responses; obeying the rules, not knowing about the regulatory changes, and being against it. Basically, the new Marriage Law seeks to stop the UM trend. The government needs to conduct socialization about the age limit change and the risks of UM. Cooperation from various parties is also needed, especially from parents who need to pay more attention to their children.

Abstract

Adolescents often struggle with low self-confidence, exacerbated by negative thought patterns and irrational beliefs that hinder their social and emotional development. This study explores the effectiveness of cognitive restructuring, a core component of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), in enhancing self-confidence among adolescents. The intervention focused on identifying, challenging, and replacing negative thoughts with constructive alternatives. A single-subject case study design was employed, with pretest and posttest measures on the Self-Confidence Scale to assess changes. Results indicated a significant increase in self-confidence scores, from 72 (low confidence) to 97 (moderate confidence). Qualitative data revealed behavioral improvements, such as reduced hesitation in social interactions and increased willingness to express opinions. The subject's belief in irrational thoughts, like fearing social judgment, was reduced, demonstrating cognitive restructuring’s role in shifting negative perceptions. This study highlights the transformative potential of cognitive counseling in fostering adolescent self-confidence. By addressing irrational beliefs and encouraging adaptive thinking, cognitive restructuring not only improved the subject’s self-esteem but also promoted positive social behavior. These findings align with existing literature, emphasizing the value of CBT-based interventions in promoting mental well-being. The study underscores the importance of integrating cognitive restructuring techniques into educational and counseling programs to support adolescents facing self-confidence challenges. However, its single-case design limits generalizability, warranting further research with larger, diverse samples. This approach offers a promising pathway for practitioners to help adolescents develop resilience and a healthier self-concept.

Abstract

Bullying among adolescents remains a critical issue that affects students' psychological and social well-being. This study analyzes the effectiveness of various school-based interventions in reducing bullying behavior and identifies key factors influencing their success. Utilizing a systematic literature review approach, this study examines research published between 2019 and 2024 from databases such as ScienceDirect, Garuda, and SpringerLink. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal checklist and the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT), version 2018, were employed to assess study quality. The findings indicate that school-based interventions are effective when they emphasize relationship-building, empathy, and holistic involvement of all school stakeholders. Consistent program implementation, teacher training, and parental engagement play a crucial role in intervention success. However, challenges such as limited resources, inadequate teacher training, and cultural resistance hinder program effectiveness. Additionally, the study highlights that while interventions improve students' affective empathy, cognitive empathy remains underdeveloped, suggesting the need for more targeted approaches. Practical recommendations include the integration of social-emotional learning in school curricula, teacher professional development programs, and culturally adapted interventions. Policymakers should establish sustainable anti-bullying policies with clear guidelines for intervention and support mechanisms. Future research should explore long-term intervention impacts, digital-based anti-bullying strategies, and the role of genetic and cultural factors in bullying behavior. This study enriches the existing literature by emphasizing the importance of localized, evidence-based intervention strategies tailored to different educational and cultural contexts.

Abstract

The Bugis-Makassar tribes are two large tribes from South Sulawesi, Indonesia, renowned for their migration tradition. Many Buginese-Makassarese young people continue this tradition by seeking better educational opportunities outside their hometown. This study aims to explore the social identity of Buginese-Makassarese migrant students in foreign cities. Using a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach and interpretive paradigm, data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis, which resulted in five key themes. The findings reveal that Buginese-Makassarese migrant students feel secure in revealing their social identity, as they maintain a positive balance in their relations with both ingroups and outgroups. They display strong cohesiveness and empathy when interacting within the ingroup and exhibit self-esteem, tolerance, and effective adaptation when engaging with the outgroup. Notably, the cultural values of siri’ na pacce—which emphasize dignity, empathy, and mutual support—play a crucial role in shaping their social identity and promoting psychological well-being. These values contribute significantly to the student’s self-concept and their ability to navigate complex social interactions in a new environment. This study provides valuable insights into how migrant students, particularly from the Buginese-Makassarese ethnic group, can adjust and maintain their cultural values while adapting to life in different cities.

Abstract

Academic self-handicapping behaviors exhibit complex relationships with psychological constructs, particularly fear of failure and self-compassion. This investigation examined the differential effects of fear of failure (X₁) and self-compassion (X₂) on self-handicapping tendencies (Y) among university students. The study comprised 398 participants (n=398; 104 males, 294 females) enrolled across five state universities in Makassar, recruited through accidental sampling methodology. Assessment instruments included the Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory Long-Form (modified), the Self-Handicapping Scale (modified), and the Indonesian adaptation of the Self-Compassion Scale. Utilizing ordinal regression analysis, the results revealed a significant positive association between fear of failure and self-handicapping (b = 0.058, p less than 0.001), while self-compassion demonstrated a significant negative relationship (b = -0.045, p less than 0.001). The combined predictive model accounted for 22.4% of the variance in self-handicapping behaviors (Nagelkerke R² = 0.224). These findings contribute to the theoretical understanding of self-handicapping mechanisms and hold practical implications for developing targeted interventions within university student support services. The results may inform the design and implementation of evidence-based training programs addressing maladaptive academic behaviors among university students.

Abstract

This study examines how organizational culture influences innovative work behavior (IWB) in Indonesian small and medium enterprises (SMEs), focusing on the mediating role of perceived organizational support (POS). A survey of 296 SME employees, with 185 valid responses analyzed, shows that a culture emphasizing collaboration, adaptability, and employee empowerment significantly enhances innovation. However, POS does not mediate this relationship, indicating that cultural factors have a more direct impact. These findings highlight the need for SME managers to foster a workplace that encourages creativity, risk-taking, and knowledge-sharing to enhance innovation capacity. By embedding these cultural elements, SMEs can improve competitiveness despite resource constraints. The study contributes to the broader understanding of SME innovation in non-Western contexts, offering practical insights for leaders aiming to build innovation-driven organizations. Strengthening organizational culture can serve as a strategic approach to drive sustainable growth and resilience in the dynamic business landscape.

Abstract

Academic anxiety, characterized by stress and worry related to evaluation processes, is a significant challenge among first-year students, often leading to poor academic performance. Religious-based interventions, such as Koran recitation, have shown promise as non-pharmacological strategies for managing anxiety. This randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the impact of Koran recitation on reducing academic anxiety among first-year psychology students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. A total of 39 participants were purposively selected based on criteria including moderate to high academic anxiety, no use of anti-anxiety medication, and limited memorization of Koranic verses. Participants were divided into three groups: one listened to Ayat As-Sakinah, another to Surah Fussilat, and the control group received no intervention. The Academic Anxiety Scale by Huberty (2012) was used to measure outcomes. Results indicated that listening to Surah Fussilat significantly reduced academic anxiety, while Ayat As-Sakinah also reduced anxiety but not to a statistically significant level. In contrast, the control group experienced an increase in anxiety. These findings underscore the potential of religious-based interventions, particularly Koran recitation, as effective tools to alleviate academic anxiety, offering practical implications for educational institutions seeking culturally relevant and accessible mental health strategies.
