Abstract

The minimum competency assessment (Asesmen Kompetensi Minimum / AKM) is an assessment of the basic competencies of Indonesian learners. The AKM consists of test questions that are created by teachers. Self-competence and critical thinking of the learner are to be emphasized by these test questions. The AKM instrument comprises two basic skills, namely reading skills and mathematical skills (numeric). The aim of this study is to find out the difficulty of Indonesian German teachers in preparing for reading competence exams and to describe the AKM test questions for learning German at high school (SMA / MA) in Indonesia. This study used a descriptive-qualitative method with questionnaire as the data collection technique. The data is Indonesian German teachers (20 teachers) difficulty in reading exam preparation and the AKM test questions they had been created. Based on the data result of the questionnaire, it is found that most teachers have had difficulty creating questions about the content of the text that encourage critical thinking of the learners. In addition, the validation results of the AKM test questions show that the text selection should be adapted to the goals to be achieved. The tasks related to the text should be able to improve the productive skills of the learner, e.g. graphic form. The selected text should contain a lot of information and the answer options should not be so easy to choose. The results of this research are intended to provide information for Indonesian German teachers so that they can create AKM test questions that encourage critical thinking skills of the learners. This can then develop the learner's reading skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the connection between German students’ digital readiness for online learning, their challenges and the support of German teachers at Foreign Languages Universities in Myanmar. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted educational institutions across the world. In Myanmar, all the learning methods shifted to online instruction. However, there are a limited number of factors that influence students’ online learning. Some of these include digital readiness and support from teachers. In addition, several challenges exist regarding their educational backgrounds. The data for this research were collected through conducting in-depth interviews with German teachers (n=10) and surveys of German students (n=112). This study took an exploratory mixed-method design. In qualitative analysis, the constructivist grounded theory method is used for data collection and the data analysis is also described and justified by Charmaz (2014) as a general guide. In the quantitative analysis, the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics through SPSS 27.0. Findings reveal that German students faced a limited number of challenges and the level of German student’s digital readiness and teachers’ support positively impacted on these factors of challenges for online learning during Covid-19 pandemic. The data analyzed showed that each of their challenges varied according to their perceptions and readiness to technology integration. To sum up, this research offers factors of challenges which significantly correlate with digital readiness and teachers’ support during the corona-crisis in developing country.

Abstract

This article deals with the translation problems of English film titles into German and their translations into Indonesian. This research aims to address the translation problems of English film titles into German and their translation into Indonesian, in particular the problem of equivalence in the translation from English into German. What are the problems that have arisen and how the titles are translated, whether the transfer of cultural elements also plays an important role? The study uses a descriptive qualitative method with comparative models. The theories used to support this research are the theory of equivalence of Nida and Taber (1974), and the theory of translation methods and procedures of Newmark (1988) and Nord (1993). The data comes from Hollywood films, All Films kino.de, shown in cinemas in Germany in 2020 and 2021 (until September). A total of 159 film titles were translated into German: 111 from 2020, 48 from 2021 (until September), from 12 different film categories. The results of the study showed that there are problems with the translation of film titles that are almost inappropriate for the source language or translated quite differently. In addition, based on the analysis of the data the translation methods were found in the translation of the titles of these films, such as the literal translation, free or descriptive translation, communicative, semantic, idiomatic or faithful methods, as well as various translation methods: additions, transpotition, modulation. This research is intended to provide further insights into the field of translation of different language pairs, in particular into the translation of film titles into Indonesian

Abstract

This research is a contrastive comparison between German and Indonesian phrasems with the component "Arsch" (ass). In order to limit the analysis, only German phrasems, more precisely somatisms, with the component "Arsch" are compared with the Indonesian phrasems. This component is deliberately chosen to answer the following questions: 1. Are there suitable equivalents in Indonesian for the German phrasems with the component “Arsch”? 2. If not, what steps can be taken to find the equivalents? 3. What are the potential problems of finding the equivalents? Duden 11 (Dictionary of German Idiomatics) is used as the basis for this qualitative analysis. To search for equivalents in Indonesian, Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia online version, Kamus Ungkapan Bahasa Indonesia by Badudu (2009) Kamus Peribahasa by Badudu (2009) and Kamus Ungkapan Bahasa Indonesia by Mahayana et al. (1997) are used. Search engines such as Google and the online news portal www.tribunnews.com are consulted during the search so that the equivalents are corpus-validated. It turns out that there are only six phrasems in Indonesian that contain the word “pantat” (ass). The six phrasems consist of an idiom and five proverbs. There is no full equivalence. Thorough dictionary research is required to find equivalents. In order to check whether the equivalents are in use, an internet research should be carried out. Problems with finding equivalents have arisen because of the scarcity of Indonesian phraseological dictionaries. Another challenge is the lack of stylistic information and the problem with the currency of the registered phrasems.

Abstract

This research is a continuation of the Kampung Jerman simulation research. Kampung Jerman is a massive role-playing simulation, in which there are various places and situations from various professions and themes of daily life that students can play to practice their spontaneous speaking skills in German language. The purpose of this research is to find a supporting game that can add a fun aspect to the Kampung Jerman simulation. It is intended to create a more comfortable condition to reduce the pressure on students during speaking practice. In addition, the use of Indonesian folk games is expected to give the participants a familiar impression and there is no need for complicated explanations on how to play them. Data were collected through questionnaires given to students representing various levels of language ability. The analytical method used is descriptive-qualitative based on the results of the questionnaire. The results of the analysis show that the six new games have a very high pleasant aspect and have a positive effect on the German language skills of beginners. The number of points given by respondents is almost perfect. There were no negative responses to any of the questionnaire statements. In addition, it is assumed that the game can increase respondents' interest in practicing their German language. From their selection of games, it appears that they think games that use more vocabulary and sentence formation are the best way to complete the Kampung Jerman simulation than games that only emphasize the physical aspect.

Abstract

These article explores the question of how literary texts can be didactizised in foreign language classroom. Based on the hypothesis that the students are still shy and reserved despite the sufficient knowledge of German, the main goal of this research ist an attempt to make the learners speak. Scenic interpretation, whose term originated from the scenic play, was concepted by Scheller (1996) in order to give literature back its meaning when he noticed the students showed a distance to foreign literary texts. This method connected the theater pedagogy with the teaching of German as a foreign language, in which two central orientations can be distinguished, namely process orientation and product orientation. In the field of foreign language acquisition, this method serves to improve oral communication skills and thus a process-oriented orientation is pursued. If one considers scenic interpretation as a methodological approach in German teaching, teaching with the means of theater is part of an action-oriented teaching, in which the students are in the center, because they themselves are active and the teacher gets more the tasks as an organizer of the learning process. The selected corpus of this research ist “Linie 1”, a musical revue by Ludwig (2007), in which Berlin dialect can be often be heard as one of the signs of authentic conversation in the scenes of subway. Not only from hearing, but also from seeing, learners get input from this musical performance, through which it is assumed that it is easier for them to imagine the spaces, the situation, the relationship and the images to interpret the texts. In order to make the students aware of the contrastive considerations, questionnaires are distributed to them, in which a few questions are asked according to the learner´s sensations. Furthermore, these literary texts are didactizised using the Four Strands model developed by Paul Nation (2007). The preliminary result of this research can be said, that after one semester sessions, the students speak more fluently because they are familiarized with the text and therefore they have more self-confidence.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the portrayal of women in Bertolt Brecht's dramas. In his plays, Brecht's women descriptions are different from the typical characteristics of his time. By looking at the way he portrayed the female characters, Bertolt Brecht's purpose can be identified. The data sources of this study are three Bertolt Brecht’s dramas, namely Die Dreigroschenoper, Mutter Courage und Ihre Kinder, and Der Gute Mensch von Sezuan. Marxist feminist literary theory is used to analyze the data. The results show that the women in Brecht's drama are described as strong and independent women. Polly Peachum and Mrs. Peachum in Die Dreigroschenoper are independent women who work to help her husband in managing the business. Mutter Courage in Mutter Courage und Ihre Kind shows an independent woman who draws some money on the battlefield. Shen Te in Der Gute Mensch von Sezuan is a beautiful woman who was chosen by God as a good person and tries hard to open a business. From the portrayal of these women, it is comprehended that the women figures created by Brecht have different characters. They are eager to act and fight against the injustice against women and the classism factor. Despite their social class and gender being weak, they can rise and show their existence to prevent themselves from oppression. Brecht’s Marxist ideology preceded the portrayal of the female characters in his dramas.

Abstract

This article examines the cognitive-semantic comparison to semantic structuring of heart in German and Thai idioms based on the metaphor. In order to achieve this goal, the idioms are investigated with the aid of the cognitive metaphor theory of Lakoff and Johnson. The result shows that the heart in German and Thai idioms conveys the meaning of feeling, thought, character, desire, etc., by itself. While structuring the specific meanings, e.g. sadness, love, etc., the metaphor plays an important role.
