Abstract

This study explores the empowerment of coastal communities through the development of ecotourism as a sustainable approach to improving local livelihoods and environmental stewardship. The research aims to analyze how ecotourism initiatives can strengthen community participation, preserve coastal ecosystems, and diversify income sources in rural maritime areas. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and observations involving local residents, tourism managers, and government representatives. The findings indicate that ecotourism development in coastal areas creates multiple benefits—economic empowerment through local entrepreneurship, social empowerment through participatory decision-making, and environmental empowerment through conservation-based practices. Community involvement in planning and managing ecotourism activities fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility toward natural resources. Moreover, ecotourism has encouraged the revival of local culture, traditional fishing practices, and coastal heritage as valuable tourism assets. However, challenges remain, including limited infrastructure, lack of marketing capacity, and inconsistent policy support. The study concludes that empowering coastal communities through ecotourism requires an integrated approach that combines environmental sustainability, economic innovation, and social inclusivity. Strengthening institutional collaboration, capacity building, and community-based governance is essential to ensure that ecotourism not only serves as a source of income but also as a pathway for long-term coastal resilience and cultural preservation.

Abstract

Underage motorcycle riding has become a persistent social and road-safety problem in Padang Sarai Urban Village, Koto Tangah District, Padang City, despite legal age and licensing requirements. This study examines the phenomenon through Travis Hirschi’s Social Bond Theory, focusing on attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief. A qualitative descriptive design was employed as the primary approach, supported by descriptive quantitative data. Primary data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and closed-ended questionnaires, while secondary data were obtained from relevant documents and literature. Informants were selected purposively, and questionnaires were distributed to 98 respondents drawn from 6,369 households using the Slovin formula with a 10% margin of error. Qualitative data were analysed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, whereas questionnaire responses were analysed using frequencies and percentages. The findings indicate that underage motorcycle riding is sustained by weak emotional attachment between children and parents, low commitment to rules and future consequences, limited involvement in constructive activities, strong peer influence, and weak belief in legal and social norms. Parental busyness, permissive family practices, community tolerance, and the normalisation of underage riding further weaken social control. The study concludes that this behaviour is not merely an individual traffic violation but a socially embedded form of deviance. Strengthening parental supervision, family communication, positive youth activities, legal socialisation, and coordinated community control is essential to reduce underage motorcycle use.

Abstract

The Karangria coastal reclamation project in Manado Bay illustrates how regional development driven by spatial expansion and economic growth can conflict with environmental sustainability and social justice. This study examines the ecological, social, and governance implications of reclamation through the perspective of Islamic ecotheology. A qualitative case study design with critical analysis was employed. Primary data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving coastal residents, fishermen, religious leaders, academics, and relevant policymakers. Secondary data were obtained from policy documents, official reports, reputable academic publications, online news sources, and digital media. The findings show that reclamation has altered coastal landscapes, damaged marine habitats, reduced biodiversity, disrupted fishing grounds, and threatened the livelihoods of coastal communities. Limited public participation has also intensified inequality because local residents bear substantial environmental, social, and economic costs while development benefits remain concentrated among investors and politically influential groups. From an Islamic ecotheological perspective, these conditions indicate a departure from the principles of khalifah, amanah, mizan, maslahah, and the prevention of fasad. The study argues that regional development should not be assessed solely through investment, infrastructure, and economic indicators, but must also incorporate ecological responsibility, participatory governance, intergenerational justice, and protection for vulnerable coastal groups. Reclamation policy therefore requires stronger environmental assessment, transparent decision-making, meaningful community involvement, and continuous ecological monitoring. A participatory, inclusive, ethically grounded, and environmentally responsible development model is essential to reconcile regional progress with coastal sustainability and justice in Manado City. Safeguarding cultural continuity and community resilience for future generations.

Abstract

This study examines the discourse of medium ugly in TikTok content created by Cut Febrina Sabatini as a form of identity negotiation and criticism of digital beauty standards. Using a qualitative approach, the research applies Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis through three dimensions: text, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. Data were collected through observation of two TikTok videos uploaded on June 25 and 27, 2025, analysis of audience comments, documentation, and an in-depth interview with the content creator. The findings show that medium ugly is constructed through informal, humorous, and reflective language that creates emotional closeness with viewers and encourages self-acceptance. At the textual level, the discourse presents beauty as relative and negotiable rather than fixed. At the level of discourse practice, the content is produced from personal experience and interpreted by audiences as both validation and labeling. At the sociocultural level, the discourse challenges narrow digital beauty standards reinforced by filters, algorithms, influencer culture, and visual comparison. However, the discourse does not entirely eliminate social pressure because it shifts value from physical appearance toward intelligence, communication skills, and personal development. The study concludes that medium ugly functions as a counter-discourse that broadens the meaning of beauty, strengthens emotional solidarity, and offers a more inclusive form of self-representation in digital spaces while still reproducing new expectations of individual self-improvement. This finding highlights the ambivalent nature of resistance within platform culture.

Abstract

Gender development and gender empowerment are central to inclusive regional development because they shape women’s access to education, health, income, employment, political representation, and public decision-making. This study examines the effects of gender development and gender empowerment on economic growth across the provinces of Sulawesi Island. A quantitative associative design was employed using secondary data covering 2010–2024. The variables consisted of the Gender Development Index, Gender Empowerment Index, and provincial economic growth rates. Multiple linear regression was applied to assess the partial and simultaneous relationships among the variables, supported by classical assumption testing. The findings show that gender development positively and significantly affects economic growth, with a regression coefficient of 0.193 and a significance value of 0.025. Gender empowerment also has a positive and significant effect, with a coefficient of 0.175 and a significance value of 0.042. Simultaneously, both variables significantly influence economic growth, with a significance value of 0.001 and an explanatory power of 47.3 percent. These results indicate that broader and more equal access for women to human-capital development, productive employment, economic resources, leadership, and public institutions strengthens regional productivity and growth. The study concludes that gender development and empowerment should be integrated into Sulawesi’s economic policy as strategic instruments for inclusive, equitable, and sustainable development, while future research should examine institutional quality, labor-force participation, poverty, financial inclusion, and interprovincial variation across diverse provincial and sectoral economic contexts.

Abstract

Poverty in coastal communities remains a persistent barrier to sustainable development, particularly for women whose access to education, economic opportunities, finance, and productive resources is limited. This study examines coastal women’s empowerment as a poverty reduction strategy aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals in Segarajaya Village, Bekasi Regency. A qualitative case study design was employed to obtain an in-depth understanding of empowerment practices and cross-sector collaboration. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, documentation, and literature review involving coastal women’s groups, the Segarajaya Village Government, the Bekasi Regency Office of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises, PT PJB Muara Tawar, and other relevant stakeholders. The findings show that women’s empowerment through the Seraci Batik business group and the Jembatan Cinta ecotourism area has improved skills, expanded employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, increased household income, and strengthened women’s economic independence, while reducing their dependence on unstable fisheries-based household livelihoods. Programme implementation is supported by cross-sector collaboration through skills training, business legality assistance, product promotion, market access, mentoring, and corporate social responsibility funding. However, collaboration remains constrained by unequal stakeholder participation, limited monitoring and evaluation, and institutional inflexibility. These empowerment initiatives directly support SDG 1 on poverty reduction, SDG 5 on gender equality, SDG 8 on decent work and economic growth, and SDG 17 on partnerships. The study concludes that balanced, continuous, and participatory collaboration is essential for strengthening coastal women’s capacity and ensuring sustainable local economic development.
