Abstract

Soybean is one of strategic foods in Indonesia, with their processed products widely consumed by the population. However, domestic soybean production is currently low, leading to a reliance on imported soybean to meet domestic demand. One form of government intervention to regulate soybean imports is to set soybean import tariffs. The Indonesian government has set a target for food self-sufficiency, including soybean. However, low import tariffs in recent years have had the opposite effect, weakening domestic efforts to increase soybean production and facilitating the flow of soybean imports. This study aims to analyze the impact of soybean import tariffs in Indonesia. The analytical method used is partial equilibrium to calculate the impact of import tariffs on the volume of soybean imports and other economic performance. This study uses basic data on world soybean prices, exchange rate, soybean import volume, domestic soybean production, soybean consumption, and soybean import tariff in 2022. The simulation results show that the liberalization of soybean import tariff results in an increase in soybean import volume and benefits the consumers, but harms soybean producers. On the contrary, the implementation of soybean import tariffs of 5% and 10% results in a decrease in the volume of soybean imports and benefits soybean producers, but harms the consumers.

Abstract

Global warming and climate change demand sustainable responses from the business sector, including SMEs, which are now the largest contributors to emissions. SMEs in Indonesia, especially in the DI Yogyakarta Province, have the potential to become key players in world-class green trade. This study aims to investigate the influence of transportation infrastructure, logistics capabilities, and Green Information System on the capabilities of SMEs in the DI Yogyakarta Province in world-class green trade. The study adopts a quantitative approach based on a survey of 225 SME owners in the DI Yogyakarta Province. Purposive sampling technique was selected and analyzed using Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The results show that transportation infrastructure substantially influences the ability of SMEs' green supply chains and global logistics. The logistics capabilities of SMEs in Yogyakarta have a positive impact on the capabilities of green supply chains. The implementation of GIS has also been shown to enhance the capabilities of green supply chains and international logistics by providing visibility, transparency, and efficiency in business operations. The influence of supply chain capabilities was found to be significantly positive on international logistics. The research findings affirm the crucial role of green supply chain capabilities and international logistics in enhancing the capabilities of SMEs to enter international trade.

Abstract

Shift-Share analysis is a method to decompose total changes in economic indicators into various components/indicators which are sources of growth or decline. This analysis is used, among other things, to see economic growth through industrial mix components, and the competitiveness of labor in a region. By using decomposition analysis per component, this analysis can be applied to international trade analysis. This paper analyzes changes or "shifts" in the share of trade (especially exports), and uses Global, Sectoral, Geographical and Product Competitiveness indicators. In contrast to simple export growth analysis, with the formula , which only looks at the total value of indicators in year compared to , this method shows what sectors/industries are experiencing changes , and the influence of sector competitiveness on total exports. The sector chosen in this research is the primary sector with a 2-digit HS group, namely (1) Fish and Crustaceans, Molluscs and Other Aquatic Invertebrates; (2) Coffee, Tea, Maté and Spices; (3) Animal, Vegetable or Microbial Fats and Oils and Their Dissociation Products; (4) Preparations from Meat, from Fish, from Crustaceans, Mollusks or Other Aquatic Invertebrates; (5) Preparations from Cereals, Flour, Starch or Milk; Cake Industry Products; and (6) Various Edible Processings. The export destination countries studied are countries in the Southeast Asia region. The results of the research show that the primary export sector is positively influenced by the effects of changes in global exports, product sector mix effects, and geographic effects, as well as negatively influenced by the competitiveness component. It is hoped that the results of this research can be an evaluation for exporters that although there has been an increase in exports, this increase is not caused by an increase in competitiveness. So treatment is needed to increase competitiveness which can influence the increase in Indonesian exports.

Abstract

This study aims to identify Indonesia’s foreign trade policy reforms and analyze their impact on its foreign trade performance. This study focuses on the reforms of policy in foreign trade that includes the policies and regulations of both the export and the import sector after the Constitutions of Job Creation (UU Cipta Kerja) enforced. Descriptive and statistical analysis used in this study. Descriptive analysis is intended to identify any fundamental changes related to the regulations of foreign trade. Then, statistical analyses that consist of Paired T-Test and Correlations Test, are aim to capture the differences in the average of exports, imports, and trade balance value before and after the enactment of Minister of Trade Regulation Number 19 of 2021 concerning Export Policies and Regulations and the Minister of Trade Regulation Number 20 of 2021 concerning Import Policies and Regulation, and to find out the relationship between import and export activities. Based on descriptive analysis, the results show that fundamental changes occurred were the form of system changes, the simplification of licensing application requirements, and positive fictitious principles. Besides, based on the Paired T-Test, there is a difference between the average of export, import, and trade balance value before and after the Minister of Trade Regulations enforced. This indicates that the regulations have an impact on the value of exports, imports, and trade balance, which their value had increased after the implementation of the regulations. Furthermore, through correlation analysis, it is proven that the value of imports is positively correlated with the value of exports. So that, the value of imports is closely related to the increase of exports value. In other words, an increase in the value of imports followed by a higher increase in the value of exports, can increase the value of the trade balance.

Abstract

In 2022, Australia decided to extend the anti-dumping duty on A4 copy paper which has been imposed to, inter alia, Indonesia with a reviewed duty by 59.7% and the implementation will be in force until 2027. This article aims to review of such measure imposed by Australia to Indonesia and how it affects Indonesia’s export. The research utilizes descriptive analysis to depict the anti-dumping case study. The analysis was obtained from several literatures, for example Australian Anti-Dumping Commission report and related journals. To analyze the problems, the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) simulation was employed and analyzed quantitatively. This study concludes that the impact of the aforementioned duty on A4 paper originating in Indonesia is relatively low to Indonesia's macroeconomic conditions. However, the impact on Indonesia’s paper industry is quite significant because all performance indicators decrease. After the imposition of the measure, the Indonesian paper industry has also not been able to diverse its market directly to its domestic market. The market access barrier to Australia and a decline in its domestic sales caused the Indonesian paper industry's production, investment, and exports to decline. As a consequence, the Indonesian paper industry will tend to reduce the absorption of its workforce. This study is expected to elaborate and evaluate the extent to which the countries subject to the imposition of the anti-dumping duty are affected when evaluated by certain economic performance. Government of Indonesia is expected to actively defences Indonesia’s position which is alleged dumping in trading partner countries.

Abstract

This analysis aims to identify superior export products, especially primary products which are the main contributors to national exports. In identifying superior primary export products, this analysis uses a Composite Index based on several indicators, including: i) import value and world import trends during the 2018-2022 period; ii) the share and growth of the share of Indonesian products in the world market; iii) export value and trend of Indonesian exports to the world during the 2018-2022 period; iv) share and growth in the share of product exports to total national exports; and v) product competitiveness as measured using the RSCA index. This analysis also projects the export value of selected primary export-leading products in 2024 using the ARIMA model and GARCH model. Based on the results of the analysis, potential primary export products that can be considered as a focus for developing and increasing exports in 2024 include processed cigarettes and tobacco, processed wood, processed shrimp, processed cocoa, coffee, CCO and its derivatives, vegetable ingredients, swallow nests, spices and seaweed. It is hoped that these superior primary products can become a focus for export development, making it easier to achieve national export growth targets and can be used as initial reference material for formulating policies to increase exports of primary products in 2024.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of economic dynamics on international trade using a multiregional analysis of Input-Output table. Multiplier effect analysis is used to study how a sector affects both the domestic economy and the economies of partner countries. Employing forward linkage and backward linkage values to analyze the linkages, determine which sectors are superior in international trade operations. The impact of partner countries' economies on Indonesia's economy is then simulated. The results show that Indonesia tends to rely on imports and exports connected to manufacturing. The manufacturing, chemical and chemical goods, and paper and printing industries are the main drivers of foreign trade. Furthermore, when Indonesia goes through a recession, the ASEAN nations typically have a big influence on the national economy. So economic diversification, domestic consumption stimulus, and building economic resilience are needed.
