Abstract

The issue of plagiarism and students' writing difficulties appeared to be a difficulty for teachers, so the existence of paraphrasing is a means to prevent plagiarizing. The objective of this study is to describe manual paraphrasing for students in paraphrasing or rewriting English writing. This research is descriptive qualitative. The analysis shows that manual paraphrasing is the activity of rewriting a text into another form manually without the help of online tools. In teaching paraphrasing manually, ten several strategies can be used by students, including using synonyms, changing the word form, changing active or passive sentences, changing transitions/connectors, changing/rearranging the order of ideas, changing or modifying text structure, simplifying or summarizing sentence, changing the double negative into a positive form, adding quotation marks for important points, and combining paraphrasing techniques. Students need to combine these strategies by applying more than two strategies than a single paraphraseIn manual paraphrasing, students must carefully study the source material, comprehend its meaning, attempt to explain it, and then rewrite it using their words while preserving the same meaning. Manual paraphrasing requires more effort and takes time than using automated tools, but the results may be better than expected.

Abstract

The aim of this investigation was to outline a need analysis for creating ESP teaching materials for students enrolled in the PGSD study program at Muhammadiyah University of Palangka Raya. This study concentrated on 40 subjects' demands for ESP material from their points of view. The result revealed that: (1) students (35%) joined ESP courses out of necessity to improve their English literacy and have a good job; (2) subjects (40%) believed they studied ESP to understand English text; (3) subjects (35%) experienced difficulty understanding the meaning of the text; and (4) subjects (50%) had trouble reading English text. (4) The findings suggested that (a) the half of learners (50%) would like to demonstration as their favorite classroom activities; (b) Browsing Internet (50%) as favorite activities to improve language skills (c) English movie was preferred dominantly (65%) as the media to perform language exposure; (d) Internet was liked best (65%) as source material; (e) 100 minute was preferred mostly (75%) as the suitable time for ESP learning; (f) product assessment was liked best (35%) as the appropriate model of assessment; and (g) the coverage topics liked best (40%) was texts related to the field of study.

Abstract

The teaching of English has some challenges, especially in primary school. The primary students do not speak English as their mother language, therefore it is quite difficult for them to acquire English fluently. Additionally, English in Indonesia is a foreign language that the children do not use in their daily life, particularly in rural areas. The preliminary study found that the primary students’ English score was under the minimum passing criteria which was 68, there was only thirty-four percent (34%) of students can achieve it. Thus, the use of teaching techniques was implemented to help the children to acquire better English. The purpose of this study was to examine how a snowball-throwing teaching method and youtube may be used to improve the vocabulary understanding of fifth graders. This study used collaborative classroom action research (CCAR). The results showed that the snowball throwing method and youtube can help students improve their vocabulary knowledge. Vocabulary tests got an average score of 93.6, with ninety-eight percent (98 percent) of students reach with the criteria. They were enthusiastic about utilizing this method to learn English. They were also able to work well in groups, and displayed excellent teamwork skills.

Abstract

The challenge in applying a learning technique must be one of the difficulties faced by the teacher in teaching English as a foreign language. This study’s aim is to discover the teacher's emotional experiences and challenges in applying the Dictogloss technique for listening class. The PhotoVoice method was used in this study as the research design. The research regarding the challenges and emotions of teachers in implementing the dictogloss technique for teaching listening has not been carried out much by other researchers, especially using the photovoice research design. The data in this research were analyzed using thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarkes. Based on the findings of this study, the participant has an average positive emotional experience. Furthermore, the results of this study indicate that there are a variety of difficulties in implementing each stage of the Dictogloss technique in teaching listening.

Abstract

Translating Cultural-Specific Items (CSIs) could present numerous challenges for translators because each culture communicates differently. Experts have given some approaches to the issue of translating culturally distinctive objects. The researchers used Aixela's (1996) theory for translation technique and Newmark's (1998) theory for analysis and categorization in relation to CSI. The purpose of this qualitative study is to analyze the translation strategies used for cultural-specific items in the translation of the Indonesian documentary "Perempuan Tana Humba" by Lasja F. Susatyo and Mandy Marahimin. The researcher utilized thematic analysis to analyze the CSIs occurring in the documentary. The research concluded that out of five types of CSI proposed by Newmark, only three types of CSIs were found: material culture, social organization, and social culture. In addition, the most frequently used strategy was repetition. This study also showed that the translation strategy for the CSI was determined by the translator's concerns or considerations, such as the occasions in which the translators applied different strategies when the previously mentioned CSIs appeared again in different point of the documentary. It was noticed that various timestamps led to different translation techniques. The study is significant for the practice of translation. The research's findings, which categorize and identify the translation procedures used to translate the CSIs, may be taken into account by translation researchers as well as by present and future translators. Additionally, this study might help to clarify how to use translation procedures and what kinds of CSIs to translate for documentaries.

Abstract

There is rarely any radio station that do not present programme on sports in the contemporary age. Most radio stations have their sports analysis in the various languages that their prospective listeners understand. It is possible because the issue of sports had become inevitable to the people irrespective of age, colour, and gender. It has become a unifying force among people of varied background. This, therefore, necessitated linguistic investigation into the grammatical properties utilized by sports analysts in their presentations on the radio. The study examines the occurrence of each grammatical property in enhancing cohesion in the presentations made by sports presenters on the radio stations. These grammatical devices include: reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. Ferdinand Saussures Model of Language Structure on Syntagmatic Relation was utilized as the theoretical framework for the study. The data for analysis in the study comprised thirty sports presentations that were recorded and afterwards transcribed to examine the manifestations of the grammatical devices. The results from the analyses show that personal reference is the most prominent of all the types of reference. Nominal substitution and nominal ellipsis are the most recurrent of the types of substitution and ellipsis respectively. The striking manifestations of coordinating, subordinating, and additive conjuncts dominate the types of conjunction employed by the sports analysts on the radio. The study suggests that radio analysts should continually undergo programmes that will enhance their grammatical competence and as well see language as a weapon for expressing content and meaning by practically influencing their listener. Abstract

Translating webtoon poses a challenge for the translator. However, many research focus on the application of comic translation instead of webtoon translation. Due to this, the research focused on finding out the translation technique used to translate the onomatopoeia in Lore Olympus from English to Indonesian. This case study was employed to analyze and interpret the translation techniques used, with case study to analyze the onomatopoeia. Content analysis and purposive sampling method was used to interpret the data between chapter 1 to chapter 50. The result of this study showed a total of 356 onomatopoeias in English and 355 in Indonesian; direct onomatopoeia was dominantly used, followed by exemplary onomatopoeia, and associative onomatopoeia as the least used. Out of seven translation technique, four was used: equivalence was used 69.5% times, borrowing was used 17.37% times, literal translation was used 11.8% times, and modulation was used 1.3% times. These translation techniques were applied to achieve meaning transfer and naturalness for the readers. However, some issues were found, for readers reading the translated webtoon, which might affect their reading experience negatively: typo, loss in artist’s intended phonetic meaning, improper expression of message, etc. The research proposed some recommendations for future researchers and translators.

Abstract

This study aimed to measure types, levels, and perceptions towards the application of humor as a supporting material in EFL classrooms. One hundred and thirteen rural school EFL students were involved as the participants of this mixed-methods study. As for quantitative results, humor was revealed to have positive influence on EFL students’ learning development by facilitating the lesson and encouraging learning enthusiasm. Although some aspects of L2 humor were not believed to be helpful, other aspects such as modelling English use and usage and authentic materials proved that such L2 humor was advantageous. Meanwhile, interview results showed that L2 humor was considered paramount that it helped to progress English learning, improve learning strategies, and increase motivation. The combination between both results prove that L2 humor is not only entertaining, but also prospective for those who expect a more realistic or knowledgeable material that does not cause stress or anxiety in learning English, particularly in a rural context. In addition, this study was limited on quantitative and qualitative perceptions, but it did not attempt to implement L2 humor through an action research.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is explaining the ideational function of the two speeches by President Jokowi about Crude Palm Oil (CPO) Policies. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The data for this study constituted two speeches President Joko Widodo about crude palm oil (CPO) exports on two different occasions at State Secretariat website (https://www.setneg.go.id) that was obtained by copying and pasting. The speeches were analysed by using systemic functional linguistics methods that is focused to ideational metafunction (experiential meaning and logical meaning). The result of the analysis was both of speech Joko Widodo revealing the similarity. Speech A showed mental process dominant in experiential meaning and speech B also showed mental process dominant. Beside the similarity both of speech, Jokowi speech revealed the differential using participant (senser), speech A used word of pemerintah, and on speech B using word of saya. Using word of pemerintah was a form of Jokowi as President not wanting to be blamed when bad things happen in made crude palm oil’s policy. Therefore, using word of saya was imaging form of Jokowi, because his clause gave profit for his electability. Jokowi was very careful in publishing speech, word of very careful reflected as self-righteousness.

Abstract

Anxiety is a common feeling among language learners. This research investigated the impacts of language learning anxiety on English as Foreign Language (EFL) students' speaking and writing abilities. Data were collected from 102 EFL college students, to whom questionnaires were distributed to assess students' performance. Speaking and reading tests were also conducted, followed by semi-structured interviews to confirm the findings from the quantitative phase. The analysis of variance revealed significant results for speaking and reading anxiety which confirmed previous findings stating that high levels of anxiety negatively affected students’ speaking ability, while reading anxiety could facilitate language learning. In addition, social factors weaken students’ speaking performance, but the opportunity to use reading strategies could improve reading task performance. The implications of the research for speaking and reading anxiety were also discussed in this study.
