It is undisputable that learning English through an online course remains challenging for most rural university learners. This study was focused on determining various self-regulation strategies during an online course employed by EFL learners from several universities located in rural areas. A total of 137 learners in 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th semesters voluntarily participated in the online survey study for several weeks. The results revealed that there were several general strategies applied by the learners, including metacognitive skills, time management, environmental structuring, persistence, and help seeking strategies. Among them were time management and environmental structuring strategies which reduce the improvement learners’ self-regulation. In short, self-regulated learning is much influenced by learners’ attitude and competence to integrate technology into online course that is mostly new in the rural context.

The main objective of this study is to explore a study of Reading Aloud Strategy in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and its relevance in contemporary educational settings. This research specifically addresses the following objectives: to identify the implications of RA implementation, determine the most effective strategies for its application, and evaluate its effectiveness across different educational levels. Data in the form of articles retrieved through internet search engines at the last five years; between 2018 and 2022. Key search terms included "Reading Aloud," "EFL reading strategies," and "teaching reading comprehension." Articles were selected based on criteria such as publication type, accessibility, participant demographics, research methods, and their focus on RA in EFL contexts. Findings are categorized based on their contributions to answering the research questions, providing insights into the strategic implementation and outcomes of RA in various educational settings. The result reveals that the RA strategy continues to be a adaptable and valuable strategy in Teaching English. Educators are still encouraged to adapt RA methods to their specific classroom contexts, using both traditional and technological approaches to maximize student outcomes in reading comprehension and other learning objectives.

This research aims to comprehend the challenges that Madrasah Aliyah Al-Hariri Tebo's tenth-grade students encountered when speaking English, as well as the solutions that the teachers offered to address these issues. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects for this study were seven students from class X at Madrasah Aliyah Al-Hariri Tebo and two English teachers. The researcher's needed criteria for seven students with the lowest test scores during English lessons were used to select the seventh student. Through observation and interviews, the data was acquired. Based on the study's findings, the researcher discovered that students at Madrasah Aliyah Al-Hariri Tebo at the tenth grade had the following five challenges when speaking English: challenges in pronunciation, challenges in vocabulary, challenges in grammar, challenges in fluency, and challenges in comprehension. Then, there are five solutions for teachers to overcome these challenges, namely: Use group or pair work, based on the activity’s easy language, provide some dialogue or instruction in effective communication, keep students speaking the target language, and the last solution is to select a task and topic to pique attention carefully.

Play Performance class at the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University is designed to introduce students to fundamental concepts of drama and elaborate underlying principles of drama performance that come into play. In this course, not only do students learn about drama aspects, but they are also actively encouraged to practice and perform their soft skills in dealing with various challenges in preparing the performances. The researchers focused on finding out students’ academic self-efficacy in dealing with diverse challenges in this class. The researchers analyzed 29 students’ progress test 1, progress test 2, and final test reflection to investigate the students’ academic self-efficacy developments and factors contributing to the academic self-efficacy. The results showed that most students considered themselves not having self-efficacy at the beginning of the class. However, after facing several challenges, students’ academic self-efficacy was growing. This study illuminates the positive impact of giving students challenges to foster self-efficacy while practicing their English skills. The findings imply that educators should provide students enough opportunities to grow from both successes and failures in the context of academic journey and provide adequate supports during the period.

This study addresses the challenges of teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in diverse classrooms, emphasizing the need for materials that promote tolerance and inclusivity. It aims to fill a gap in existing curricula by developing reading materials that integrate tolerance dimensions, enhancing both language proficiency and socio-cultural understanding among EFL students. A mixed-methods approach was employed to provide practical insights and contribute to the theoretical framework of multicultural education in EFL contexts. The findings revealed that the experimental group, using the developed materials, achieved significantly higher scores (M = 85.6) compared to the control group (M = 78.2). An independent samples t-test confirmed a significant difference between the groups [t (84) = 20.777, p < 0.05], demonstrating the effectiveness of the materials in fostering student engagement and understanding of diverse perspectives. The study highlights the importance of incorporating both linguistic and social elements into teaching resources, promoting inclusivity and a supportive learning environment. The theoretical framework is grounded in Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC), emphasizing the role of cultural awareness and identity in language learning. The results suggest that integrating tolerance dimensions into reading materials can enhance learning outcomes for heterogeneous EFL students, aligning with prior studies showing the positive impact of culturally diverse materials on student interaction and language development.

This study is investigating the efficacy of using a Chatbot to enhance vocabulary acquisition in ESP, particularly in Business English. A total of 44 undergraduate students from a Polytechnic University in Indonesia participated in an experimental design. Later, they were divided into two groups: an experimental group that was engaged in continuous interaction with the chatbot for 14 weeks and the control group, following traditional instruction. Data collection was done through pre-tests, post-tests, and interviews. The experimental group significantly exceeded the control group in the post-test scores, according to the results; hence, the Chatbot is useful to support students in vocabulary learning. Such a fact was again asserted in the interview results, which showed the Chatbot's practicality and simplicity of usage for the participants in working with ESP vocabulary. Although positive, it has its limitation of a small sample size and focused on vocabulary alone. These limitations themselves suggest the need for further research. The future directions of such studies need to look into the larger vista of chatbot usage relating to other language skills also and the potential of this tool across educational settings and disciplines.

The purpose of this writing is to uncover how graffiti can multimodally represent Indonesian police and create ideology through the use of its textual and visual element. This writing is descriptive qualitative research with multimodal discourse analysis approach. The data of this research are collected through the internet, as the real graffities have been erased from the real-life locations. The data of this research consist of virtual images and sentences of the graffiti that have been documented. The data are analysed through the use of Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen’s multimodal discourse analysis theory of the representational meta-functions, and Michael Halliday’s ideational meta-functions. The analysis is divided into textual and visual analysis. The result of the analysis shows that the graffities represented ideologies that Indonesian police is easily corrupt, enemy of the people, and does not accept critique from the public by the use of specific visuals and words. The graffities that are used as the data of this research are forms of the creators’ ideologies toward Indonesian police.

EFL learners consider reading English texts as a tiresome and unpleasant task that must be completed since they are not used to being exposed to interesting reading materials (Lee, 2015, p. 66). Digital children’s literature allows EFL learners to experience reading books interactively. This research aims to investigate whether using digital children’s literature prathambooks.org has a significant effect on EFL college students’ reading anxiety. prathambooks.org is a web-based story book that provides an open-access repository through the prathambooks.org feature. This study examined 184 undergraduate students enrolled in Introduction to Literature at Universitas Negeri Padang's English Department during the 2022/2023 academic year. Data were collected via a 26-item reading anxiety questionnaire adapted from Ahmad et al. (2013), administered pre- and post-intervention. The intervention consisted of a 15-day program utilizing 15 digital stories from Prathambooks.org, supplemented with comprehension and vocabulary exercises. This protocol was designed to investigate the effects of digital children's literature on college-level reading anxiety. The finding showed a positive effect on students’ reading anxiety after following reading treatment. The students’ post-response scores decreased significantly by about 4.04%, from 70.51% to 66.47%. This research proves that integrating prathambooks.org with structured exercises as reading material has a significant effect on decreasing EFL college students’ reading anxiety.

Writing is a process-oriented language skill requiring students to construct and develop ideas and thoughts in written form. This study was designed to investigate whether there is an effect of PLEASE strategy on students’ writing skills and motivation to recount texts among 11th-grade students. This study employed a quasi-experimental design on both experimental and control classes. The data were collected through writing tests to measure writing skills and a writing motivation questionnaire to analyze writing motivation. The data were analyzed statistically using a t-test after complying with Normality and Homogeneity test. The results revealed that PLEASE strategy affected student’s writing skills and motivation to recount texts compared to teacher-centered strategy. PLEASE strategy promoted a metacognitive skill within the writing process on recount texts. This was favorable to assist the students in planning, monitoring, and evaluating writing through the steps of Pick, List, Evaluate, Activate, Supply, and End, and motivate the students to write extrinsically and intrinsically. This study recommended broader implementation of PLEASE strategy to teach the writing process across other text genres in all stages of education.

English has become an essential language for many purposes, including educational needs. However, English learning still has various obstacles, such as the lack of adequate environment and facilities for learning English, including Sintang, a border area. The environment and facilities greatly influence students' English learning. It raises the question of how good the English skills are there. However, the researchers' concern in this study is students at the university level. Universities were chosen as relevant subjects because they are at the highest level of English learning in formal schools. To achieve this goal, researchers use qualitative methods and conduct English language proficiency tests guided by CEFR on students in Sintang. There were 149 results obtained by researchers after conducting the test, but only 139 can be taken as data for this study. This study's results indicate that most students are basic users.
