Abstract

Social infrastructure development in Indonesia remains dominated by a top-down approach that limits community participation. This study aims to analyze the integration of Hindu philanthropic values in community-based social infrastructure development in Bandar Lampung. A qualitative descriptive method was employed through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis involving Hindu religious leaders, PHDI, PERADAH, KMHDI, and academics. The findings indicate that the values of dāna, seva, and karma yoga are integrated into deliberative decision-making, transparent community fund management, and intergenerational participation, thereby strengthening social cohesion, accountability, and a sense of community ownership over social infrastructure. In addition, the integration of Hindu philanthropic values contributes to the preservation of cultural identity and the sustainability of community social practices. This study concludes that Hindu philanthropy functions as a sustainable social system that supports participatory governance and inclusive community-based infrastructure development.

Abstract

The transformation of religious authority has become a central issue in the era of digital communication, as religious discourse increasingly shifts from institutional spaces to virtual platforms. This study examines how digital media reshapes religious authority through virtual communication practices on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, the research utilizes digital ethnographic observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of online preaching content and community interactions. The findings reveal that digital media produces new configurations of religious authority that are no longer grounded solely in institutional legitimacy, but also in communicative competence, audience intimacy, and strategic engagement with social media algorithms. While digital platforms expand access to religious knowledge and encourage participatory engagement among believers, they simultaneously generate challenges related to authority fragmentation, authenticity, and the circulation of unverified religious narratives. The study theoretically implies a shift from a hierarchical model of religious authority toward a networked and relational form, in which legitimacy is continuously negotiated within digital spaces rather than formally ascribed.

Abstract

The usada rare manuscript is one of the most important sources of Balinese traditional medicine, focusing on child healthcare and integrating knowledge of medicinal plants with spiritual practices. However, the plant names (phytonyms) present challenges for scientific validation, as many names are locally specific, polysemous, or refer to plant mixtures. This study aims to examine the structure and concept of usada rare, analyze phytonyms, and their relevance to modern healthcare. This study employs a qualitative-ethnographic approach through literature studies and interviews. Seven main versions of the usada rare and six supplementary lontar manuscripts containing plant name synonyms were examined. Phytonyms were extracted, cross-referenced, and matched with scientific names using ethnobotanical literature and herbarium databases. Fieldwork involved interviews with traditional healers or knowledgeable individuals. Observations and photographic documentation were used to verify plant identity and uses. Data were analyzed through editing, classification, tabulation, and interpretation, with quantitative summaries of plant part usage. A total of 275 plant species from 81 families were recorded. Fabaceae, Moraceae, and Zingiberaceae were the most represented families. Leaves were the most frequently used plant part, followed by roots and bark. Certain phytonyms, such as triketuka and sindrong, refer to herbal combinations whose full species composition remains unidentified. Overall, usada rare provides an empirical foundation for integrating local medical knowledge with contemporary, culturally sensitive approaches to child healthcare. The study also strengthens Balinese traditional medicine by reinforcing its epistemological legitimacy while opening pathways for interdisciplinary research and sustainable healthcare development.

Abstract

Studies of Balinese art have often approached artistic continuity through a dichotomy between tradition and innovation an approach that often neglects the existential dimension of artistic creation. In studies of Wayang Tantri in particular, this framework has likewise been used to interpret creativity as the outcome of negotiation between tradition and innovation. However, the principle of kawi dalang fundamentally unsettles this view, as it presupposes difference and novelty as inherent conditions of the dalang’s (puppeteer) creative practice. This article proposes an alternative perspective that moves beyond such dichotomous assumptions by approaching Wayang Tantri as a mode of artistic existence in which meaning emerges from the dalang’s embodied experience rather than from a static opposition between traditional forms and creative novelty that marginalizes the subject. The study adopts a qualitative philosophical methodology, drawing on Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology to examine creativity in Wayang Tantri. The findings show that, when situated within an existential dimension, creativity entails an understanding of art and the body as inseparable. Artistic expression unfolds through the historical situatedness of the dalang’s body within a continuously enacted relationship with the world, which constitutes the field in which artistic meaning is disclosed. These findings challenge the dichotomous tradition innovation framework, including the notion of “negotiation,” which implicitly reifies art as a mere object of observation. Accordingly, Wayang Tantri is understood as a living, dynamic, and relational artistic phenomenon, in which existential experience provides an epistemological foundation for understanding Balinese art and serves as a source of truth in artistic practice.

Abstract

The Tingkeban tradition is an important ritual in Javanese culture, performed when a pregnancy enters the seventh month. Within the framework of Hindu teachings, Tingkeban can be understood as part of the Manusa Yadnya ceremony, a sacred sacrifice intended for human welfare and honoring new life. Although the tradition seems ancient, Hinduism has not abandoned tradition because tradition or culture is created through mind. Every culture contains values that are beneficial to humanity, but in the modern era, belief in them has faded. Therefore, the values in the Tingkeban tradition that is carried out to this day are important to reveal through research. This study aims to uncover the meaning behind the Tingkeban tradition practiced by Javanese Hindus, including the form, meaning, and function of the Tingkeban tradition in Kalirejo Village, Kendal, Central Java. This research is a qualitative study, data collected in the field through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results reveal that each element, both in rituals and offerings, contains spiritual, social, and philosophical meanings that reflect the harmonious relationship between humans, nature, ancestors, and God. The Tingkeban tradition also has a strong social function, including strengthening social relations, fostering a spirit of mutual cooperation, and serving as an ethnopedagogical medium for passing on cultural values to the younger generation. Amidst the rapid flow of modernization, the people of Kalirejo Village continue to maintain this tradition as a cultural identity and community identity, as well as a form of local wisdom that is still alive and relevant to today's society. The conclusion is that the Tingkeban tradition contains noble values that are worth maintaining until now because through this ritual, pregnant women are psychologically calmed which has an impact on fetal development.

Abstract

Globalization and modernization have significantly affected the sustainability of social ethical values within Hindu society, particularly among the younger generation. This condition highlights the urgency of strengthening value-based education to reinforce ethical foundations in social life. This study aims to analyze the role of Pasraman Semara Ratih in Tukadmungga Village, Buleleng District, Buleleng Regency, in internalizing Hindu-based social ethical values. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through an extensive literature review of Hindu scriptures and relevant scholarly works, supported by in-depth interviews and participatory observation involving pasraman administrators, teachers, and students. The data were analyzed thematically through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that Pasraman plays a strategic role as a character education institution by internalizing core Hindu social ethical values, including Dharma (duty and social responsibility), Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truthfulness), Karuna (compassion), and Sewa (selfless service). These values are implemented through a holistic learning process and socio-religious practices grounded in the principle of Tri Kaya Parisudha. In conclusion, Pasraman functions as a moral stronghold and a preserver of Hindu social ethical values, contributing to the formation of a young generation that is ethically grounded, socially responsible, and capable of adapting to the dynamics of modern life.

Abstract

The Rejang Pedawa dance is performed by young women who have reached adolescence but have not yet experienced their first menstrual cycle. This dance movement represents a sense of boundary (the concept of limits or barriers), the dimensions of the female body, Hindu esthetics, body-based worship schemes, and the esthetic aspects of liturgical behavior. The purpose of this research is to analyze philosophically and esthetically the medium of worship that is actualized thru the female body. This research applies a qualitative method within a case study framework. Data was collected thru interviews, observations, and literature reviews. The female body, used as a medium for dance movements and the ideology of worshiping a transcendent entity, represents the actualization of natural or supernatural elements. The body movements of the Rejang Pedawa dance create women's ability to channel cosmic energy, incorporate the world, and reflect the interdependence between humans and God (Dewa Indra). The Hindu esthetics in this dance are perceived as a manifestation of artistic experiences that have been internalized into both the personal and communal aspects of the local community, the people of Pedawa Village. The actualization of the village’s characteristic rejang dance demonstrates a way of seeing, thinking, and total surrender to the Almighty entity. The movements of each dancer are used as a bridge between the human world and the divine world, a process of total surrender within an integral scope, becoming a visualization of a sacred arena realized thru the beauty of movement.

Abstract

The Pugung Raharjo Archaeological Park in East Lampung faces complex managerial challenges as a multi-functional destination encompassing conservation, tourism, and ritual space. This study aims to formulate a participatory strategic governance model to balance these three functions, particularly in accommodating the sacred values of megalithic remains actively used for Hindu spiritual rites. A qualitative method with a multi-stakeholder case study approach was employed. Primary data were gathered through in-depth interviews with the Cultural Heritage Preservation Office (BPK) Region VII, the East Lampung Regency Government, site guardians, and the Hindu community. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive method, grounded in Stakeholder Theory. The findings reveal that while no open conflicts have occurred, the current operational management of the site remains sporadic, relying on "informal customs" and ad-hoc communication between institutions. A significant gap was identified where the Hindu community, despite possessing high urgency and legitimacy regarding the site, has not been formally involved in strategic decision-making by central authorities. This lack of formalization poses a potential risk to the degradation of sacred values and administrative uncertainty. In conclusion, this research proposes a "Cultural Value-Based Strategic Governance Model" which advocates for the establishment of a Multi-Functional Governance Forum. This model offers solutions through the formalization of stakeholder participation, the integration of Conservation Religious Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and the strengthening of the site’s religious brand equity. Implementing this model is expected to ensure the physical preservation of cultural heritage while respecting its function as a living spiritual space.
