Abstract

The Subak agricultural system in Bali functions not only as a traditional irrigation structure but also as an integration of ecological knowledge and Hindu spirituality, particularly through the use of the Wariga astrological system. In the context of modernization and social transformation, this astrological practice is increasingly challenged, raising concerns over the sustainability of local cultural knowledge. This study aims to explore the role and transformation of Hindu astrology in the agricultural culture of Subak communities in Tabanan Regency, as well as to examine community-driven efforts to revitalize such traditional knowledge. Using an ethnographic approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, document analysis, and focus group discussions with local farmers and customary leaders. The findings reveal that Wariga remains a significant epistemological framework for determining planting schedules and agricultural rituals, despite the ongoing hybridization with modern calendrical systems. Adaptation strategies such as the digitalization of Balinese calendars, the involvement of customary institutions, and cultural education initiatives have become essential in maintaining the relevance of Wariga. This research highlights the importance of recognizing local epistemologies in sustainable development and the need to integrate spirituality, traditional knowledge, and agricultural policy. This research confirms the importance of integrating local epistemologies in sustainable agricultural policy, while enriching non-Western scientific discourse.

Abstract

Differentiated learning can be interpreted as learning that seeks to provide maximum learning services to students. This learning is often referred to as learning that favors students because its implementation refers to mapping students based on learning readiness, learning interests and learning profiles. The implementation of differentiated learning in Hindu Religious Education and Budi Pekerti subjects at the high schools level in Mataram city is still very rare, and one of the schools that implement it is Senior High School 4 Mataram. This study aims to critically analyze the implementation of differentiated learning in Hindu Religious Education and Budi Pekerti subjects at Senior High School 4 Mataram by adopting the Catur paramita approach which comes from the concept of Hinduism. This research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection using observation, interview, and documentation techniques. The collected data were then analyzed through the process of data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. Based on this research, differentiated learning in Hindu Religious Education and Budi Pekerti subjects at SMAN 4 Mataram which is applied to the aspects of process differentiation and product differentiation can maintain student motivation, concentration and learning focus. Through the implementation of differentiated learning with the implementation of the values of catur paramita teachings, the learning process can be more effective.

Abstract

Adapting and internalizing concepts in local wisdom is very important to strengthen the character of students, in the midst of the onslaught of juvenile delinquency. One of the concepts of Balinese local wisdom in the aspect of education is the concept of Panca Siksaning Angaji. This concept is not only a learning model, but contains social, cultural, and spiritual values and is ideal to be internalized in character building. Based on this, this study aims to analyze the importance of the concept of the panca siksaning angaji in strengthening character education for students. The analysis was carried out with a qualitative research approach to literature review, based on relevant Balinese literature. Based on the results of the research, the panca siksaning angaji consist of the aspects of gugu, teleb, inget, wiweka and laksana. Gugu is interpreted as the process of initiating confidence in students, Teleb instills the principle of seriousness, Inget means strengthening the understanding of character values, Wiweka applies critical and creative thinking, and Laksana means the application of character values in students' daily lives. The five interrelated parts strengthen character education based on local Balinese wisdom, and ideally can be internalized in students who are integrated into the daily learning process. This research can help increase insight into the importance of character education based on local wisdom, especially Balinese culture, to form a superior and characterful young generation in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Sulinggih attire in Balinese Hindu tradition embodies symbolic manifestations that integrate philosophical, spiritual, and pedagogical values, yet faces threats of meaning degradation due to globalization and the younger generation’s shift toward materialistic aesthetics. This study aims to explore the symbolic-aesthetic dimensions of Sulinggih attire, analyze the phenomenon of value shifts, and formulate relevant religious art education strategies. A qualitative ethnopedagogical method with an ethnographic design was employed through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis (lontar manuscripts, curricula) of 16 attire components, involving Sulinggih priests, literary experts, and youth. The results reveal three key findings: (1) the semiotic system of Sulinggihattire represents spiritual hierarchy, cosmic balance, and self-transformation; (2) a value shift from philosophical simplicity to aesthetic extravagance occurs, driven by commercialization and meaning reduction in digital media; (3) integrative educational strategies—textual-practical curriculum, philosophical training for Sulinggih, and technology integration (AR/VR)—prove effective in enhancing youth understanding. Theoretically, this study enriches ethnopedagogy by integrating local culture with educational innovation. Practically, a curriculum model based on Tri Hita Karana (Balinese philosophy of harmony) and collaborative workshops with traditional artisans (undagi) are recommended to restore the attire’s sacred meaning while maintaining relevance in the digital era. The implications emphasize balancing traditional value preservation and methodological adaptation in religious art education.

Abstract

Bali faces an existential dilemma in maintaining its Hindu cultural identity amid transformation into a global tourism destination, where spiritual commodification threatens the sacred values of traditional practices such as Satwika food and Usadha. This research analyzes the representation of Hindu cultural identity through these two practices and their interaction with cultural tourism dynamics. A qualitative-ethnographic method was applied with case studies in Ubud and Penglipuran villages, involving participant observation, in-depth interviews with 15 informants, and analysis of lontar manuscripts. The results show that 72% of restaurants and Usadha clinics in tourist areas ignore sacred rituals and dana punia principles, replacing them with profit-oriented business models. This commodification transforms spiritual essence into exotic consumption products, risking the disruption of authentic value transmission to younger generations. However, the Penglipuran community has developed cultural resilience strategies through ritual integration in participatory homestays and hybrid Usadha models that combine dana punia with commercial rates. The research affirms that the preservation of Balinese Hindu cultural identity depends on creative adaptation that maintains harmony between spirituality, ecology, and economy. Theoretically, this research contributes to cultural tourism theory by presenting the concept of adaptive cultural resilience and enriching Hindu cultural resilience studies by proving that ritual flexibility based on Tri Hita Karana is more effective than traditional rigidity. These findings enrich glocalization discourse by demonstrating the capacity of local wisdom to create cultural sustainability amid globalization pressures.

Abstract

Art in Balinese Hindu society functions not merely as an aesthetic expression, but as an integral component of ritual practices that reflect cosmological and spiritual values. Gulingan Village in Badung serves as a significant locus for the preservation and transformation of sacred art, yet philosophical studies that position art as a medium of spiritual transcendence within Hindu aesthetics remain limited, particularly within customary communities. This study aims to explore in depth the roles and meanings of art in the religious practices of the Gulingan community, emphasizing the symbolic, spiritual, and social dimensions embedded in sacred artistic expressions. The research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, utilizing in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation of artistic practices. The findings reveal that art in Gulingan is perceived as an act of devotion and a medium for uniting humans, nature, and the divine, as embodied in the Hindu aesthetic principles of Satyam, Śivam, and Sundaram. Art serves a symbolic and pedagogical function as a sacred language that reinforces spiritual awareness and cultural identity. Community participation in transmitting these artistic traditions also fosters a space for dialogue between tradition and modernity. In conclusion, art in Gulingan is not merely an aesthetic expression but a cosmological and transformative medium that binds spiritual, social, and ecological relationships into a unified value system. Art plays an active role in fostering social cohesion, maintaining spiritual continuity, and articulating the values of Tri Hita Karana in the daily lives of Gulingan communities. This study contributes to the development of Hindu aesthetic discourse by highlighting how sacred art functions as a living philosophical praxis within a local community context, thereby enriching the field of community-based sacred art studies.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of studies on the transfer of the Aswamedha Parwa text into Geguritan Yadnya Ring Kuruksetra (GYRK), especially from the perspective of brahmana ethics, amidst the rampant transformation of Balinese literature that often ignores the moral dimension. The purpose of the research is to analyze the representation of brahmana dharma and the concept of lascarya (sincerity) in GYRK, and to revitalize the philosophical values of Balinese Hinduism through a hermeneutic approach. The method used is textual hermeneutic analysis from the perspective of Hindu literature and philosophy. Primary data are taken from the GYRK and Aswamedha Parwa texts, while secondary data include brahmana ethics literature such as Sarasamuscaya and Agastya Parwa. The results of the study show that Tri Kaya Parisudha (thoughts, speech, deeds) and lascarya are actualized through the actions of four brahmanas who face moral dilemmas, such as food sacrifices in conditions of famine. The transformation of yadnya from a horse sacrifice ritual to a social sacrifice reflects the adaptation of Balinese Hindu ethical values to the challenges of modernization, such as individualism and poverty. Conflicts between characters in the text are resolved through spiritual integrity, such as sewaka dharma (sincere devotion) that goes beyond formal obedience. The conclusion of the study confirms that GYRK not only revitalizes traditional philosophical values, but also becomes a medium for intergenerational ethical dialogue, bridging local wisdom with modern demands through the holistic actualization of dharma. This study contributes to the study of religious literature with a hermeneutic analysis model that integrates text, context, and philosophy, while also offering an adaptive ethical paradigm in responding to global moral degradation.

Abstract

The background of this study stems from the gap between the rich spiritual and moral values found in the Lontar Dharma Śāsana a treasured body of Balinese Hindu literature and its pedagogical implementation in contemporary formal education, where the text is often limited to ritualistic studies without transformative integration into character formation. The aim of this research is to analyze the transformation of the noble values of Dharma Śāsana into the pedagogical foundation for Hindu sasana (character) education in the modern era, through the identification of values, evaluation of their relevance, and the design of a contextual curriculum. This study employs a qualitative library research method with a philosophical hermeneutic approach, facilitating a fusion of horizons between historical textual meanings and modern educational contexts. It also accommodates the transcendent, universal, and applicable dimensions of Hindu teachings through an analysis of six key pupuh (Mijil, Pucung, Dandang, Dandang Gula, Kumambang, Pangkur). The findings reveal: (1) the identification of 28 core values categorized into spiritual, social, and moral dimensions; (2) a three-phase integrated curriculum design that synergizes Dharma Śāsana values with the Pancasila Student Profile through project-based learning; (3) an authentic assessment model based on an adapted Bloom's taxonomy of spiritual-social competencies; and (4) implementation strategies such as restorative justice rooted in Asta Pangredanan and contemplative pedagogy. The conclusion asserts that this transformative model effectively bridges the gap between text and practice, while also offering a character education framework grounded in local wisdom that is responsive to the challenges of the digital era. The scientific contribution of this research lies in the development of the first integrative pedagogical model that converts the hermeneutics of traditional Hindu texts into an operational framework for the Merdeka Curriculum, enriching the discourse on locality-based character education within a global perspective.

Abstract

Religious intolerance in Indonesia has been on the rise, negatively affecting social harmony through increasing violations of religious freedom by both state and non-state actors. This phenomenon underscores the need for an approach capable of addressing the complexities of a multi-religious society. This study aims to analyze the contributions of perennialism and religious moderation as strategic pillars in fostering harmony amidst religious intolerance, while also contributing to the fields of religious studies and social-religious policy in Indonesia. The study adopts a qualitative literature review methodology, utilizing thematic analysis of relevant literature. The thematic analysis is carried out by identifying the key themes in the literature on perennialism, religious moderation, and interfaith harmony, and examining how these concepts are applied in the Indonesian context. The findings indicate that perennialism provides a philosophical foundation through the recognition of universal spiritual values shared across religions, while religious moderation promotes inclusive and tolerant attitudes in religious practices. Together, these concepts serve as strategic pillars in strengthening interfaith dialogue, fostering solidarity, and enhancing cross-cultural understanding. Additionally, religious moderation emphasizes the importance of Pancasila values as the foundation of national unity. In conclusion, the integration of perennialism and religious moderation offers not only theoretical insights but also practical solutions to mitigate religious conflict and build sustainable harmony in Indonesia's multicultural society. This study introduces a novel approach by integrating perennialism and religious moderation, offering a more holistic and contextually relevant framework for Indonesia’s socio-religious landscape, an area not extensively addressed in prior research.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the transformation of global education, including Hindu religious instruction, which emphasizes spiritual values and traditional practices. This shift demands adaptive learning strategies that preserve the essence of religious teachings while remaining responsive to technological advancements. This study aims to analyze the hybrid learning strategy (offline-online) implemented in Hindu religious education at SMA Dwijendra Denpasar, assess its challenges and opportunities, and evaluate the effectiveness of the applied model. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed, using data collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the developed model successfully integrates cognitive, affective, and spiritual dimensions through interactive approaches such as virtual pilgrimages, gamification, and digital journaling. In addition to increasing students’ motivation and participation, this strategy redefines the teacher’s role into that of a spiritually grounded facilitator utilizing technology. Nevertheless, several challenges persist, including digital access inequality, limitations in translating sacred experiences into digital formats, and the complexity of managing multimodal instruction. Even so, innovations such as the Virtual Pura and digital peer mentoring systems have helped overcome some of these barriers. The study concludes that a value-based and contextually grounded hybrid learning strategy can foster authentic, adaptive, and transformative religious learning experiences in the post-pandemic era.
