Abstract

In Japanese language learning, kana letters (consisting of hiragana and katakana) are basic components that students must master to understand the structure and reading of Japanese. This research is a descriptive quantitative research using descriptive statistical techniques. Data were taken from a total sampling of class XI IIS A to XI IIS F totaling 26 students. The results of this study indicate that most grade XI students at SMA Negeri 1 V Koto Kampung Dalam have good ability to remember Katakana, with an average score of 83.03. As many as 65.38% of students managed to achieve the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM) of 76, which indicates that the majority of students have mastered the material well, while 34.62% of students are still below the KKM. This shows that there is a difference in mastery of the material between students. In addition, it is also known that the average value for the katakana seion indicator is 83.46, and for katakana yoon 82.69, which shows that the mastery of the material in both indicators is in line.

Abstract

Gairaigo as foreign loanwords, have become increasingly prominent in Japan’s public spaces and reflect the interaction between global and local languages ad cultures. This study aims to analyze the forms, functions, and factors undelying the use of gairaigo on Ishigakijima Island, Ishigaki City. Data were collected using a qualitative method through observations of public signage and were analyzed based on the theoretical frameworks of linguistic landscape and sociolinguistics. The results indicate that some gairago have undergone shifts in pronunciation and word choice, although their functions and meanings without change. The adoption of gairaigo in this region is driven by three main factors: 1) the nuanced meanings of foreign words cannot be fully replaced by Japanese equivalents, (2) effectiveness and efficiency in conveying information, and (3) aesthetic value, which is perceived as more appealing and in harmony with the Japanese linguistic sensibility. These findings confirm that gairaigo function not only as a form of linguistic adaptation but also as a cultural integration that enriches public communication in Japan.

Abstract

Social interaction constitutes a fundamental aspect of human life and serves as the primary medium through which communication among individuals is established. The aim of this study is to identify the forms of complaint speech acts in the television series Shinya Shokudo: Tokyo Series through a sociopragmatic approach. This research not only illustrates complaints occurring between sellers and buyers but also reflects the broader phenomenon of complaints within the everyday life of Japanese society. The data were obtained from ten episodes of the series, in which various complaint phenomena were observed. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing observation and note-taking techniques, as well as pragmatic equivalence for data analysis. The findings reveal that complaint strategies are realized in direct, indirect, avoidance, and even threatening forms, selected in accordance with social relations, power distance, and interactional context. These findings emphasize that complaint speech acts serve dual functions: expressing dissatisfaction while simultaneously maintaining politeness and the cultural value of wa (harmony) in Japanese communication practices.

Abstract

This study examines the function of shikkari in illocutionary speech acts in Japanese utterances on the social media platform X. The research aims to uncover the pragmatic functions of shikkari through the framework of illocutionary acts and Searle’s constitutive rules (1979). A qualitative method was employed, with data collected from posts between January and August 2025. The analysis focused on grammatical structure to determine whether shikkari functions as an adverb or verb, based on Kamiya (2002) and Terada (in Sudjianto & Dahidi, 2007), and its lexical meaning as explained by Kindaichi (1997). Searle’s constitutive rules were then applied to classify the types of illocutionary acts. A total of 56 utterances were analyzed, resulting in four categories: assertive (14), directive (19), expressive (18), and commissive (5), while declaratives were absent due to the lack of formal institutional contexts. The findings indicate that shikkari functions not only as an adverb but also as a verb when combined with suru (e.g., shikkari shiteiru, shikkari shiro, shikkari shiyou). Pragmatically, three main tendencies emerge: (1) when referring to a person, shikkari means “reliable” or “having the potential to become a great person,” comparable to tanomoshii; (2) in imperative forms such as shikkari shiro directed to institutions, it conveys “wise and responsible” or “resilient under pressure,” comparable to kenjitsu and kizen; (3) when referring to objects, shikkari signifies “precise and detailed,” comparable to seimitsu. In conclusion, the study highlights the contextual and multifaceted nature of shikkari. These findings contribute to research on Japanese adverbs and provide valuable insights for learners, translators, and scholars.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the signs and meanings of surprised expressions experienced by the protagonist in the Japanese drama Cursed in Love. The research data consist of selected scenes from episodes 1, 3, 5, and 7 of the drama, which contain moments of intense emotional reactions and expressions of surprise. Data were collected using the observation technique by repeatedly watching the drama and taking notes of significant scenes. The data were then analyzed using a semiotic approach, applying Paul Ekman’s theory of basic emotional expressions (1971) to identify facial expressions of surprise, and Roland Barthes’ theory of denotation and connotation (1957) to explore the literal and cultural meanings behind the expressions. The analysis results are presented descriptively in an informal manner to make the findings easier to understand. The research shows that surprised expressions in Cursed in Love are not only universal emotional reactions but also carry deeper cultural and narrative meanings, such as trauma, distrust, and emotional tension, which reflect the character’s psychological development and family conflicts throughout the story.
