Abstract

This study explores the discourse of spirituality in Serat Kalatidha by Raden Ngabehi Ranggawarsita through the lens of Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis. The analysis focuses on the pupuh sinom, which reflects the poet’s spiritual response to moral decay in the zaman edan (age of madness). Using a descriptive qualitative method and literature study technique, the research reveals that Ranggawarsita responds to a corrupted social condition by choosing a spiritual path—distancing himself from worldliness and surrendering fully to God. The spiritual values constructed in the text encompass budidaya (inner and outer effort), eling (self-awareness), waspada (moral vigilance), and ndedonga (devotion through prayer). These four pillars serve as spiritual guidance—an “antidote” for navigating an era filled with uncertainty. Through the discourse analysis framework, Serat Kalatidha is revealed as a depiction of Ranggawarsita’s spiritual journey, born from his inner anxiety over a chaotic and unjust world.

Abstract

This article examines the spirituality of the Javanese people as reflected in Syair Risalah Tamba Ngantuk, a work by KH. Mohammad Zuhri that conveys strong moral and religious messages. The syair represents Javanese Islamic teachings through self-awareness, repentance, and a personal relationship with God. This study aims to reveal the forms, expressions, and meanings of spirituality in the syair using Puspoprojo’s hermeneutical approach, which consists of three principles: grammatical (nalar rasa), historical (pangerten kontekstual), and philosophical (laku tafsir). Using a qualitative method with thematic content analysis, the study finds that spirituality in the syair is expressed through teachings on the awareness of death, the importance of repentance, ethics in seeking knowledge, cosmological views of the soul, and prayer as a spiritual act. The hermeneutic interpretation shows that KH. Mohammad Zuhri not only delivers normative Islamic teachings but also expresses spiritual values in a gentle, poetic, and contextual language. Thus, Syair Risalah Tamba Ngantuk embodies a creative dialogue between Islam and Javanese culture, remaining relevant to contemporary religious life.

Abstract

Tawhid education, part of Islamic education, has an important position in Javanese society, especially for Muslims. Tawhid education can be obtained in various ways from various sources, one of which is from Serat Ambiya, which is part of Javanese local wisdom. The purpose of this study is to describe and explain the values of tawhid contained in Serat Ambiya. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a philological approach. Data in the form of words, phrases, clauses, or sentences in the text are taken by applying the purposive sampling technique. Data collection used reading and note-taking techniques. Based on data analysis of Serat Ambiya, the values of tauhid education contained therein can be summarized as follows: the acknowledgment of Allah as the Lord of the Universe and Allah as the Creator and Provider (tauhid rububiyah); the rejection of worshiping anything other than Allah, the declaration of tauhid, the prohibition of shirk, and the recitation of the tauhid phrase (tauhid uluhiyah); as well as the establishment of Allah's eternal nature, the call to invoke Allah's name, and the glorification of Allah (tauhid asma wa sifat). Strengthening the value of tawhid through local wisdom is one of the options as part of efforts to strengthen the values of Islamic Education in Javanese society.
