Abstract

Due to their uniqueness, which among others are having various forms (particles, morphemes, words, phrases, minor and extra-sentences), different form of part of speech, containing connotative, emotive or affective, and social-stylistic meanings, culturally-bound, etcetera, it is quite challenging to translate interjections, exclamations and phatic communions from one language to another, especially when it involves literary work. To discover the most effective strategies, analysis was conducted by comparing BumiManusiaby Pramoedya Ananta Toer with its English translation ‘This Earth of Mankind’ by Max lane. To gain the optimum meaning transportation, interjections, exclamations and phatic communions especially those containing socio-cultural meaning, those which has been archaic, universally used and understood, and any interjections, exclamations and phatic communions written in other language than that of source text should be retained. The spelling and the orthography can be adjusted to target language system if necessary andwhen the context allows. Any interjections, exclamations and phatic communions which have equivalent in target language have to be translated. Those with no equivalents should be retained as they are. For clarity,extra information can be added on their first appearance. On their second appearance onward, they can be retained. It is sometimes wise to translate them into a different part of speech.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were 1) to classify types of quality maxim, 2) to describe the types of quality maxim violation in the dialogue between students and lecturers in the process of thesis guidance.This research belongs to qualitative research. The data were all dialogues between lecturers and students having quality maxim (either violating or obeying), while the data source was the lecturers and students in the process of thesis guidance itself. This research used two kinds of data collection method, they were documentation and content analysis. The instruments were tape recorder and data cards, while the methods of data analysis were reduction, display and verification.After having analysis, it could be seen that the results of this research were type of qualitymaxim: obeying maxim and violating maxim. The violations were in the field of content(material), methodology and writing system.

Abstract

AbstractWriting as one of language aspects becomes the main language practice in each English class. Regarding to the college student task, writing English job application letter requires college students to provide the well-formed letter for job preparation. Therefore, understanding the errors of English sentence structure in college students’ job application letters can bring the suitable English grammar study for writing the formal letter. This research was conducted to find the errors on English job application letters written by college students in fourth semester at STMIK Sinar Nusantara. The respondents were selected as many as 30 students by using purposive random sampling technique. The collected data were taken from the respondents’ writings, English job application letter. The analysis used the algorithm of conducting error analysis proposed by Corder. In this research, students’ job application letters indicate omission with its 92 data or 35,35 % error, mis-formation with its 80 data or 30,80% error, mis-ordering with its 63 data or 24,23% error, and addition with its 25 data or 9,62% error. This research indicates that though the students had references of English job application letters from internet, they still had errors in writing own English sentences in formal form. Keywords: Error Analysis, English Error Analysis, English Application Letters, Job Application Letters, English Formal Letters

Abstract

This article is a descriptive qualitative study that aims to describe the challenges and strategies in translating paralinguistic and onomatopoeias. Data were collected from a novel by Pramoedya Ananta Toer “Bumi Manusia” and its translation “This Earth of Mankind” by Max Lane. Content and discourse analyses were performed through reductions, codings, displays, and verifications. The analyses came to a conclusion that paralinguistic (and non- linguistic) as well as onomatopoeic features are culturally bound. Ones can exist in a language community but may not in another, and the adoptions can also differ; thus, the equivalence cannot be fully maintained. Analyses on "Bumi Manusia" and its translation on its paralinguistic and non-linguistic features including onomatopoeia showed that to achieve the optimum equivalence, some steps need to be conducted. For paralinguistic and non-linguistic features two steps are needed i.e., following the target language syllabication system and adding more descriptions/illustrations on the scene to emphasize the clarity of the context; while four steps are needed to translate onomatopoeias i.e., by using onomatopoeias of the target language with the closest meaning to that of the source language, combining several onomatopoeias, lexicalizing, and using an onomatopoeia of different part of speech.Keywords: translation, paralinguistic, onomatopoeia

Abstract

This study analyzes politeness strategies of the journalists on racism issue of Papuans. This study used Politeness strategies of Brown and Levinson, mainly bold on record and off record strategies to identify the journalists’ politeness. This study employed descriptive – qualitative method to find out politeness of the journalists to report the issue of racism. The data were got from five articles in the Jakarta Post English Newspaper published in Jakarta.  The findings are 33 frequencies which consist of Off record with 20 frequencies (60.6%) and Bald on record with 13 frequencies (39.4%). Each frequency above comes from the amount of the cooperation of data between Off record and Bald on record. The mostly strategy used is “give hints” because the journalists wanted to state his wishes about the racism in Papua. This study can be concluded that these articles the journalists have many understand about the racism and do face to face to the interviewee in order to get much information.Keywords: Politeness, Racism, and Indonesian Journalists

Abstract

The aims of this study is finding and describing politeness principle in Persuasion movie adopted from one of famous novels written by Jane Austen.  This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research were words, phrases and sentences on the dialogues uttered by the characters which generated politeness principle. The techniques of collecting data used in this research were documentation and content analysis. The procedure of the research obtained from collecting the data, giving code to each data, displaying the data and drawing the conclusion and the researcher used theory triangulation. The research found 23 data in Persuasion movie that consisted of: 1) tact maxim (6 or 26%), 2) approbiation maxim (4 or 17%), 3) generosity maxim (3 or 13%), 4) modesty maxim (3 or 13%), 5) agreement maxim (6 or 26%) and sympathy maxim (1 or 6%) which tact maxim and agreement maxim found as the dominant type of politeness principle in Persuasion movie. The conclusion of this research were: 1) there are six types of politeness principle which specifically discussed in this research and there were 23 data collected from those six types. 2) the researcher drawing the data into percentage to make it easier to saw which types of those six maxim were become the dominant type which founded. Factually, there are a lot of discussion dialogue which contains agree and disagreement and it requires the participants (speaker and listener) minimize cost and maximize benefit to other as the reason why Tact Maxim and Agreement Maxim become the most dominant type of politeness principle that are used in Persuasion movie.

Abstract

An image is deemed as one of the tools through which a magazine communicates particular messages. The messages may include various purposes, such as commercial or political purposes and values. Thereby, understanding a magazine cover image constitutes an essential issue for the underlying purposes and values that a magazine tries to communicate through it can be revealed. One of the most controversial magazine covers is that which was issued by The New Yorker on July 21, 2008, depicting Obama and his wife, Michelle. The portrayal was perceived as controversial on account of sentiment to a particular religion, namely Islam. Hence, this study aimed to figure out the meanings of the magazine cover, particularly in association with the anti-Islamic sentiment. Besides, the qualitative method, a semiotic analysis based on  Barthes' (1986)  theory of signification, were employed. The findings revealed that the signs had some indications for the anti-Islamic sentiment represented through the portrayals of the figures of Obama, Michelle, and the other pictures surrounding them. Moreover, some conclusions drawn from the analysis asserted that the magazine cover image represents signs having to do with the portrayal of Obama and Michelle during the election campaign and these also represents some attitudes vis-à-vis the anti-Islamic sentiment of some people in the US then. Finally, the present study advocates some considerations to reduce such a negative sentiment to Islam and Muslims, namely through education, appropriate and thorough framings from the American media, and intensive communication through inter-religious rapport and contact.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out and describe forms of arguments mostly used by debaters in open grand final both NUDC 2020 and WUDC 2021. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The subjects were 8 debaters selected by a purposive sampling. The instrument of this study was observation checklist adapted from Steven Johnson’s theory. It was supported by a video recording downloaded from YouTube and transcript making from the video has been downloaded. The researchers used descriptive method to analyze the data. The result of this study showed that there were eight models of argument forms from eight debaters in video open grand final NUDC 2021, namely one simple model argument, two chain model arguments, four cluster model arguments, and one complex model argument. Meanwhile, in video open grand final WUDC 2021, there were twelve arguments from eight debaters namely three simple model arguments, one chain model argument, six cluster model arguments, and two complex model arguments. Also, the cluster argument model was the dominant model used in open grand final both NUDC 2020 and WUDC 2021.

Abstract

An Analysis of English Speaking Practice through Online Learning for Students: Practicing English speaking is always necessary for students to communicate globally. In this COVID-19 pandemic, the online learning is the only way for students to still receive the learning process. Students often find the difficulties when studying through online learning, especially when they practice their English speaking. Therefore, the researcher is interested in discussing about the process ofEnglish Speaking Practice through Online Learning, the supporting and obstacling factors. This research would help the lecturers in finding the right methods and teaching techniques, the institution to find and solve the problem and the students to improve their English speaking skills. The researcher will use a descriptive qualitative method. The qualitative research metod is aimed to find the best of an individual point of view and know more about the research in further ways. The researcher will give the quesioner to the respondents and an interview to some of the class representatives.

Abstract

Language politeness is an important element in communication, by paying attention to language politeness, someone is considered to have good character so that what is conveyed can be accepted by the interlocutor. The application of language politeness is very necessary in every speaking activity. This study aims to determine describe the forms of language politeness among teachers and students in English learning activities. This research is included in the type of descriptive qualitative research. So that the data obtained in qualitative form and analyzed descriptively. The method used in this research is the padan pragmatic method by Sudaryanto. The data collection technique used in this research is the technique of with dasar or basic technique in the form of sadap and its lanjutan or advanced technique in the form of simak bebas libat cakap then are continued with rekam or recording and catat or note-taking technique. The results of the analysis show that there is an application or use of language politeness in the teaching and learning process in the English class which is represented in the transactional text English subject for 9th grade at SMP N 1 Pandak.
