Journal of English Teaching and Applied Linguistic (JETA) is a peer-reviewed journal run by the English Language Education Department of STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung (Institute of Teachers Training & Education of PGRI Bandar Lampung), Indonesia. JETA aims at reporting high-quality empirical and original research contributions for the benefit of teachers, lecturers, and researchers in the field of English Language Teaching, Applied Linguistics, Literatures, and English Language Studies. The scope includes theory and practice in English language teaching and learning, language teachers’ training and education, teaching English as a second or foreign language (TESL, TEFL), Applied Linguistics, English Literatures, and English Language Studies. Abstract

This study explores how the Mahabharata has circulated globally through mechanisms such as translation, adaptation, canonization, and scholarly criticism. Drawing on qualitative research methods, this study examines the primary text of the Mahabharata and secondary data from academic journals, books, and critical theories. It highlights the role of translation in preserving the text’s cultural essence while navigating political and ideological challenges, particularly during British colonial rule. Adaptations of the Mahabharata, including its influence on Indonesian Wayang Kulit and Peter Brook’s international theater production, demonstrate the complex process of transforming the epic to suit diverse cultural contexts. The paper also addresses feminist readings of the epic, focusing on the representation of Draupadi, and how modern adaptations challenge traditional portrayals. By analyzing these mechanisms, this study reveals how the Mahabharata has been canonized, critiqued, and integrated into global literary discourse, affirming its enduring relevance and universal appeal.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of skimming and scanning techniques on the improvement of reading comprehension. Skimming involves quickly reading a text to get the general idea, while scanning focuses on locating specific information. Both techniques are commonly used to enhance efficiency in reading and to improve understanding, particularly in academic and professional settings. The research explores how these methods help readers to better grasp the main points, identify key details, and boost overall reading speed. The findings indicate that students who apply skimming and scanning strategies show significant improvement in their reading comprehension skills, particularly in terms of accuracy and time management. This paper concludes that incorporating these techniques into reading practices can be an effective way to enhance reading comprehension.

Abstract

PQRST technique is used to improve students’ reading skill at the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Bandar Mataram. In this research, the writer took Classroom Action Research (CAR). This reasearch conducted 31 students including 15 male and 16 female students. The writer devided into two classes and included four stages such as; planning, action, observation adn refletion. In a pre-cycle, the writer assess identifying initial reading, challages, guiding targeted intructional strategies. For collecting data, writer took interviews, field notes, observation checklists and reading test showed clear improvements. Based on the data, the writer got the average learnig activity score rose from 3.42 (“fair”) in Cycle 1 to 3.95 (“fair to good”) in Cycle 2. Reading scores also improved significantly: the pre-cycle average of 53.19 (9.67% meeting the Minimum Mastery Criterion, MMC) increased to 71.61 in Cycle 2, with 61.29% of students achieving or surpassing the MMC. In conclusion, the PQRST technique effectively enhanced students’ engagement and reading comprehension, though further refinements may be needed to reach the full mastery criterion of 75% for the class.

Abstract

In this study, the researcher conducted classroom action research to investigate the improvement of students’ speaking skills through the implementation of Gallery Walk Technique. This study was carried out at XI-1 class of SMP Negeri 6 Denpasar. The total number of students in this class were 40, however just 27 students were participated because 13 students were officially excused (dispensation) during the data collection period. This study conducted due to the researcher found that students still faced challenges to developing their speaking skills due to limited opportunity to practice their speaking in class, fear of making mistakes, and lack of confidence. To address this issue, the researcher implemented the Gallery Walk technique. To collect the data, the researcher used a combination of speaking tests (pre-test and post-tests), observation checklists, and questionnaires. The speaking tests were used to assess students’ performance in terms of comprehension, fluency, organization, accuracy, and pronunciation. These instruments were used across two cycles of the Classroom Action Research to evaluate improvements in students’ speaking skills and students’ attitudes. The findings showed an improvement from post-test 1 to post-test 2. In the first cycle, 55.56% of students passed the KKM, and in the second cycle, it increased to 81%. This shows that the Gallery Walk technique helped improve students’ speaking skills. Moreover, the observation and questionnaire also showed that students had better self-confidence, were more willing to communicate, took more risks, and felt less anxious. This means that Gallery Walk is effective technique to help students improve their speaking skills by creating a more interactive and enjoyable learning environment where the students could interact with their classmates by rotating from one station to other stations.

Abstract

Please The phenomenon of mother tongue shift among urban youth has emerged as an increasingly prominent issue amid the tides of globalization and digitalization. A language that should serve as a symbol of cultural identity is now experiencing a decline in both usage and meaning in the daily lives of the younger generation, particularly in urban areas. This article aims to examine in depth the factors contributing to the shift of the mother tongue and its implications for the linguistic identity of urban Indonesian youth. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach and library research methods, this study synthesizes findings from various scholarly journals and academic books related to sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and language behavior among youth. The results indicate that this shift is driven by the dominance of slang, the influence of social media, formal education systems that inadequately support the preservation of the mother tongue, and the weakening role of families in language transmission. As a result, youth are experiencing a linguistic identity crisis, reflected in a diminished sense of pride in their mother tongue and reduced communicative ability with older generations. This article highlights the need for synergy between educational institutions, families, and government policies to address this phenomenon and restore the mother tongue as a vital component of national identity

Abstract

Buddhist culture and related principles offer valuable insights into education, highlighting mindfulness, critical thinking, and compassion as essential principles for addressing 21st-century global challenges. These principles are crucial for fostering authentic and sustainable learning, empowering learners to address complex challenges such as sustainability, social inequality, and technological disruption. Buddhist principles, including mindfulness, critical thinking, and compassion, can be integrated into educational approaches to promote sustainable learning. Mindfulness practices improve emotional regulation, focus, and cognitive function, while critical thinking encourages analytical reasoning, reflective thinking, and discerning thinking. Compassion fosters empathy, kindness, and concern for others' well-being. The present paper offers a note on it.

Abstract

Today's students are familiar with technology, this makes their desire to write less. They are not taught to get used to writing something, they are used to typing something improperly without the rules of language use and correct spelling. Whereas, writing is a standard passive skill that students must at least master considering the demands that they must always write, whether it is daily assignments, writing proposals, journals and even theses. To improve students' English writing skills, researchers used critical review as one of the learning methods in the classroom. Critical review requires students to understand the details of the text, including the arguments, evidence, and conclusions presented. By reviewing something critically, students find it easier to express their thoughts in writing. This research is a classroom action research that has 2 cycles, the object of this research is English education students in semester 4 at STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung. The results show that there is an increase in the average score of students' writing skill, and there is also an increase in student learning activities in the classroom. Abstract

  This study aims to analyze the implementation of the First In First Out (FIFO) method in the management of foodstuffs in the kitchen of Hotel Holiday Inn Resort Baruna Bali. The research method used is qualitative descriptive with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study show that the application of the FIFO method has been carried out through labeling, rotation, and arrangement of foodstuffs, but the recording of stock in and out has not been optimal. The main obstacles faced are limited human resources and limited operational time, especially during peak hours. The strategy implemented by the management in the form of the preparation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and daily supervision by outlet leaders is able to increase staff awareness of the importance of FIFO. This study recommends the implementation of a stock recording system, routine training, and periodic evaluation to improve operational efficiency and service quality.

Abstract

Education plays a vital role in shaping excellent and adaptive human resources, which are the foundation of national development. However, the low interest and academic achievement of students—particularly in the subject of Indonesian language—remain a prevalent issue. One contributing factor is the use of outdated and less innovative teaching methods that do not meet students’ needs. This study aims to improve student engagement and academic achievement through the integration of differentiated instruction within a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model, focusing on news text material. The research method used was classroom action research (CAR) based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, implemented in two cycles. The research subjects were 36 eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 6 in East Lampung Regency. Data collection techniques included tests, observation, and documentation. The results showed an increase in learning engagement from 67% in the pre-cycle to 78% in cycle I, and 84% in cycle II. Meanwhile, academic mastery increased from 56% to 69%, and then to 89% across the same phases. These findings indicate that integrating differentiated instruction into the PBL model has a positive impact on the quality of Indonesian language learning.

Abstract

This scientific article discusses slang as a medium of adolescent communication in social interactions between others. Because humans actually need communication in their lives, one of which is using language as a medium of communication. Because human language can convey messages, thoughts, feelings, goals effectively to others, it is also possible to bring about cooperation between individuals. Therefore, the role of language becomes very important in every facet of human life. This article was written with the aim of providing information that slang has become a medium or communication tool for adolescents, also explaining about something that has to do with language as a means of communication in every human social interaction. In writing this article using the literature review method, all data is obtained from relevant literature data. In the discussion of this article explains about slang as a medium of communication among teenagers. The characteristics of slang in the form of words, acronyms and abbreviations, factors that influence the emergence and use of slang as a medium of communication, also explain the impact of the use of slang in social interaction. As social creatures, of course, humans need communication in their lives in order to establish relationships between others. From the writing of this article, it can be seen that the millennial generation or teenagers already have creativity in communicating, both through abbreviations and acronyms in the form of Indonesian and English, so that it can show the context of communication culture in the modern and cool world of teenagers.
