Abstract

The purpose of this study is to detect the characteristics that enable and hinder the adoption of problem-based learning (PBL) in developing students' speaking abilities through critical thinking. It is expected that by understanding these elements, a successful approach can be formulated to improve educational quality and student outcomes. This study utilizes qualitative research methods along with descriptive techniques. Information was collected through interviews, observation, and analysis of documents. The researchers focused on 27 students in 5th-semester English Education at KH. Mukhtar Syafaat University. As a result, the researchers identified various elements that promote the implementation of PBL aimed at improving students' speaking skills through critical thinking. These factors include available resources and infrastructure, teamwork among group members, and students’ inclination toward solving problems as a group. For hindering factors are time management, prior knowledge, formulating hypotheses, and environment. This environmental factor will affect students' critical thinking and speaking skills. And it is the main factor why most of the 5th semester TBIG students are still lacking in critical thinking.

Abstract

With this study, the authors explore the evolution of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in English language education and its substantial contribution to language proficiency, critical thinking, and student engagement. With technology evolving at a fast pace and world becoming a global village, the conventional means of education are slowly dying and are not enough to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century. In response to these challenges, Project-Based Learning (PBL) has mature as a student-centered approach that promotes relevant and real-world problems and tasks, active learning, and collaboration. The corresponding research brings together research published from 1980 through 2024, emphasizing the period of 2019–2024. Employing thematic analysis, three main themes emerged from the literature, which were language proficiency, developing critical thinking skills, challenges in implementing PBL, and technological integration. The research shows that PBL leads to higher levels of language proficiency, especially in speaking and writing, promotes critical thinking, and increases engagement among learners. However, many barriers exist, including lack of teacher preparation and limited curriculum and materials availability. Finally, the paper concludes that the potential of PBL in English language education is maximized with teacher training, curricular flexibility, and equitable access to technology.

Abstract

The effect of the Wordwall platform in enhancing students' reading comprehension was examined in this study, focusing on eighth-grade students at a private Islamic Junior High school in Jambi. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was employed, involving two groups: an experimental group and a control group, each consisting of 29 students selected through cluster random sampling. Data were obtained through pre-tests and post-tests using short essay questions focused on recount texts. A notable effect in reading performance was observed in the experimental group, which mean score increased from 55.86 to 76.03. Meanwhile, the control group demonstrated a smaller increase, from 57.59 to 69.14. The data met the assumptions of normality and homogeneity, and a statistically significant difference was identified through a post-test t-test (t = 3.699, p = 0.01), indicating that the alternative hypothesis could be accepted. These results suggest that the integration of Wordwall into reading comprehension contributes positively to students’ learning outcomes. Moreover, its interactive features were found to enhance student engagement, indicating that digital tools such as Wordwall can be effectively utilized to support reading comprehension, particularly in junior high school contexts.

Abstract

This study addresses the challenge of improving English-speaking skills among Room Division students at Makassar Tourism Polytechnic, crucial for effective communication in hospitality roles. Many students struggle with fluency and confidence due to limited practice and language anxiety. To bridge this gap, the English Matriculation Program (EMP) was developed, integrating Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) to enhance practical language skills. A pre-experimental design was employed with 60 students, who underwent pre- and post-tests, alongside a questionnaire to gather perceptions of the program’s impact. Key CLT elements—social engagement, focus on meaning, and critical thinking—were emphasized, with tasks including role-plays and problem-solving exercises that mimic real-world communication. Structural equation modelling and paired t-tests indicated a significant improvement in speaking performance, with average scores rising from 39.10 to 62.87. Questionnaire results reinforced these findings, with students reporting increased confidence, reduced anxiety, and better fluency. Overall, CLT’s practical, student-centred approach effectively enhances English proficiency, preparing students for successful communication in the hospitality industry.

The researcher analyzed the film using a qualitative descriptive approach. The data used is the script of the film "Inside Out 2". Data was collected through documentation and then entered into a tabulation as a data collection instrument. The researcher analyzed the data by watching the film while looking for types of speech in the film script and while noting what had been found. Furthermore, this study found that the film Inside Out 2 uses the most offers as one type of commissive speech act. The identification results found 55 examples of commissive speech acts, namely promises with a total of 10 data, threats with a total of 5 data, offers with a total of 21 data, and rejections with a total of 19 data.

Abstract

The discussion section of a research article serves to explain and highlight the importance of the study’s results in relation to the existing knowledge surrounding the research problem. This section should be given more attention since the researcher would give his ideas through his own words and sentences. Accordingly, this research attempts to discover the sentence length and pattern in the discussion section of a research article by international authors in applied linguistics published in international journals. The method used in this study was a descriptive qualitative study to discover and describe the data. The total number of articles in this study was 30 from six international accredited journals sites indexed by corpus (Q1). The first result indicated that the most frequent types were Medium and Long sentences. It may imply that the authors are willing to write efficient sentences by combining two or more simple sentences to deliver ideas more informatively. The second result indicated that the most frequent types of sentence patterns were Simple and Complex sentences. The authors tended to make simple sentences to help the readers understand the ideas and thought more easily. The authors created complex sentences to make the discussion more efficient and to avoid the redundant of the same sentences or repetition. The third result indicated that RELC articles had the highest frequency of long sentences among all five different journals. The fourth result indicated that RELC articles had the lowest frequency of simple sentences and a relatively frequent number of complex sentences among the five different journals. In contrast, GEMA articles had the highest frequency of simple sentences and a relatively small number of complex sentences. In conclusion, even though the five journals are classified as Quartile 1, they still had differences.
