Abstract

The experiment was conducted to determine the effect of phosphorous fertilization on growth and production of Indian pennyworth (Centella asiatica L. Urban) in the high altitude (1,500 m above sea level/asl). This experiment was carried out at Gunung Putri experimental station Balittro,Cipanas, Cianjur in October 2008 until April 2009. The treatment was laid-out in a Complete Randomized Block Design and consisted of single factor with 5 replications. The factor was P2O5 fertilization i.e. 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 kg P2O5.ha-1. The results of the experiment showed that P2O5 fertilizer significantly increased the total leaf number, leaf length, the total flower number, leaf thickness of mother plant and production components at 6 month after planting. The highest production (1.34 ton dry weight.ha-1) was achieved by 60 kg P2O5.ha-1. The optimum dosage to improve dry weight production of Indian pennyworth in high altitude was 65.84 kg P2O5.ha-1.Key words: Centella asiatica L., phosphorous fertilization, production

Abstract

This research was aimed at studying the effect of plant propagation material and organic fertilizer on Anredera cordifolia [Ten.] Steenis growth. The experiment was conducted at the Sawah Baru Experimental Field, IPB from March to June 2010. This study was laid out in a factorial randomized block design consisting of two factors. The first factor was the plant material i.e. two types of planting materials, root rhizome and stem cuttings with leaves. The second factor was the type of organic fertilizer i.e. without fertilizer as the control, combination of soil and organic fertilizer 1:1 (v/v), i.e. compost, cow manure, and chicken manure. The result showed that stem cutting gave higher plant height, leaf number and width and number of branches. Treatment of planting medium significantly affected plant height, number and width of leaf, fresh and dry weight of roots, stems and total weight of fresh leaf. Cow manure gave the best effect. Interaction of plant propagation material and organic fertilizer only significantly affected plant height at 2 Week After Planting (WAP) and root dry weight. Stem cuttings is a better plant propagation material on all types of organic fertilizer than rhizome.Key words:organic fertilizer type, propagation materials, Anredera cordifolia

Abstract

Tamarillo is a perishable fruit. To ensure the highest fruit quality tamarillos must be harvested at an appropriate stage of maturity. In the present study, effects of maturity stage and storage temperature on the physical and chemical characteristics of tamarillo were determined. The fruits were harvested at three stages i.e. immature, mature, and ripe and kept in cold storage at 10 oC and at ambient conditions (28±2 oC) for a period of 15 days. The fruits were evaluated for quality variables at harvest and after 5, 10 and 15 days of storage. During investigation period fruit quality variables changed according to stage of harvest. An increase in weight loss, total soluble solid (TSS) was observed with the advancement of maturity stages and storage period. In contrast, vitamin C content and titratable acidity followed a linear decline with storage and advancement of maturity stages. Fruits harvested at optimum stage retained maximum TSS, titratable acidity and sensory quality (color, flavor and texture) score during storage of 10 days at ambient and 15 days at cold temperature.Key words : Tamarillo, maturity stage, storage, fruit quality

Abstract

Arumanis Mango (Mangifera indica L. cv Arumanis) which is one of Indonesia’s tropical fruits having a high potency to be developed as an export commodity. Limited volumes of the fruit have been exported using air cargo and attempts in using sea freights with reefer containers for long distance market had not given convincing result. Therefore, efforts in optimizing the use of a reefer container are essential. Investigations, were performed in order to decelerate the deterioration fruits which involved different combined concentrations of O2 and CO2 gases during storage of Arumanis mango at cold (12+1.5oC) and room (28+2oC) temperatures. Four different combined gases of O2 and CO2, namely 5% O2 and 5 % CO2; 5% O2 and 10% CO2; 10% O2 and 5% CO2; and 10% O2 and 10% CO2 were surged surrounding the fruits stored at the cold and room temperatures. Fruits without treatments with the combined gases were prepared as kontrols. The investigation indicated that the cold temperature of storage was still the best way to slowing down the deterioration of the fruit. There were no significant different effects on the rate of deterioration among the fruits treated with the different combined concentrations of O2 and CO2. The controlled atmospheres, however, were better for storing the fruits compared to those stored without controlled atmosphere.Key words: controlled atmosphere, Arumanis, mango

Abstract

Research was conducted on a banana cultivar of Rajabulu/AAB inside the green house. This research was aimed to study the effect of rhizobacteria and the ability of in vitro bacterization to prevent FOC. This study was conducted using split plot design. The main plot was rhizobacteria treatments (P. fluorescens ES-32, B. subtilis SB-3, a mix of both types and without bacteria), sub plots consist of in vitro (2 weeks and 1 week prior to application) and in vivo (during acclimatization) bacterization. All treatments were repeated 3 times, each consist of 7 polibags. The result of rhizobacteria treatment (B. subtilis SB3 or P. fluorecens ES32) was able to reduce the Disease Severity (Rhizome Discoloration) caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp cubense (FOC). The incorporation of mixed rhizobacteria provided significant effect suppressing the infestation of FOC. The application of mix bacteria was better than single treatment. Keywords: B. subtilis, P. fluorecens, rhizome discoloration, fusarial wilt, suppressing

Abstract

There is a high demand on pectin–utilizing yeasts for industrial, agricultural and environmental purposes. Further exploration of yeast from various sources are important to enrich yeast culture collections. Nine yeast strains were isolated from various soil sources sampled based on biological sampling in Bogor and Central Java. Enriched media containing pectin as carbon sources was employed for isolation of the yeast. The isolated yeast were identified according to the methods described in monographs by Kreger – Van Rij (1984), Barnett et.al (2000), Guilliermond and Tanner (2006) . The strains isolated were taxonomically separated into 3 groups. Group I contains 3 strains, and this group is closely related to Candida tropicalis. Group II contains 4 strains, and this group is included in this genus Rhodotorula. Group III contain 2 strains, and this group is closely related to Williopsis saturnus, which is a synonym of Hansenula saturnus. Pectinolytic enzymes (Polygalacturonase) were produced by all of the tested strains. Polygalacturonase was produced as high as 1.7 U.ml-1 by strain no. 111 of group I, 1.7 U.ml-1 by strains no. 123 of group II, and 1.0 U.ml-1 by strain no. 211 of group III.Key words : yeast, pectin, polygalacturonase
