Abstract

Within the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context of higher education, there is a discernible emphasis on academic writing, often overshadowing the realm of creative writing. Nevertheless, creative writing remains a prevalent and integral component of EFL education. This study endeavors to scrutinize the perceptions of EFL students regarding creative writing and elucidate the potential benefits derived from its practice. Employing a qualitative approach, the research conducted in-depth interviews as its primary mode of data collection, engaging six students enrolled in an English Education Study Program in Indonesia. These students had actively chosen to participate in an elective course centered on literary works. The study's findings revealed nuanced perspectives among students, highlighting the intricacies associated with creative writing. Students perceive creative writing as intriguing, underscoring the necessity for its inclusion in higher education. Simultaneously, they acknowledge its potential difficulty and emphasize the importance of clarity in its instructional delivery. Furthermore, the research discerned that creative writing serves as a valuable tool for emotional expression, a conduit for the development of creativity and imagination, and a means to refine writing and language skills. The implications of these findings extend beyond the conventional realm of language mastery, emphasizing the multifaceted advantages that creative writing offers in an educational context. Consequently, educators in higher education are urged to deliberate and meticulously plan the incorporation of language in creative writing classes or activities. Recognizing and leveraging the broader educational benefits of creative writing can enhance the pedagogical approach, fostering a more comprehensive and enriching learning experience for EFL students.

Abstract

The pandemic has had a significant impact on education. Students' academic self-confidence has likely been affected as well. The transition to current onsite learning may have contributed to feelings of anxiety and decreased their self-confidence. This study aimed to measure student’s academic self-confidence and its impact on their English learning process. It was a descriptive research design with quantitative questionnaires distributed to 100 male and female students of Islamic broadcasting communication study program of IAIN Kediri. The result revealed that few students had low academic self-confidence when they had to argue in English with their classmates. Most students had high academic self-confidence to carry out other activities in the class and outside the class in finding English learning goals. Furthermore, students’ academic self-confidence highly affects their autonomous learning so that makes students able to work and learn English independently by using computers and the internet. It makes learning English more enjoyable for them as well. In addition, most of the students agreed that their self-confidence caused them to make regular plans to review English lessons, actively participate in English learning, ask English-related questions to classmates and lecturers, to share ideas and opinions in English group discussions, and also do English presentations well. The results of this study can be a consideration for English teachers to pay more attention to students who still have low confidence by applying teaching strategies that increase students' self-confidence.

While students at the primary and secondary levels commonly engage in such activities, the integration of field trips into tertiary education remains infrequent. University studend who attend the English classes are seldom afforded the opportunity to directly observe authentic professional environments or explore potential workplaces related to their future careers, experiences that can be facilitated through field trips. Additionally, given the increasing emphasis on the internship program held by Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, a gap arises as students are limited in their exposure to real-world work environments. The objective of this research endeavour was to investigate university students' perceptions of field trip activities and assess how these experiences contribute to the development of students' autonomous learning skills. Qualitative data for this study were collected through two questionnaires, a preparation and a reflection Google sheet. The participants consisted of 27 students enrolled in the International Relations Study Program at UPN Veteran Jakarta. The findings of the study revealed that field trips offer numerous benefits to English for Professional Purposes students, including enhancing their understanding of academic concepts, providing a deeper real-world context for learning, and fostering social interaction. The questionnaire results demonstrated a predominantly positive perception among the students. To get the research trustworthiness, the Kappa statistical reliability test in NVivo 14 was used. The results of the Kappa statistical reliability test showed that the value of the reliability agreement level of data was > 0.75, which proved that it was categorized as excellent. Abstract

Student learning success is primarily determined by their skills in writing scientific texts as their final assignment. However, students experience problems when preparing research proposals. The obstacles experienced were triggered by students' views that scientific writing is challenging and students' lack of understanding of input from lecturers. So, this research has four objectives, namely describing (a) language mindset, (b) corrective feedback preferences, (c) students' follow-up strategies in writing scientific texts, and (c) the correlation of the three. This research employed a mixed method. The research subjects were Indonesian Language Education students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Data was collected using questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The results show that the highest average language mindset is a growth language mindset (4.573). As many as 95.3% of students had an average questionnaire of 3.5-5.00, so most students had a growth language mindset tendency. The dominant corrective feedback that students prefer is an explicit correction (4,895). The average of the follow-up strategy is 4.30, demonstrating that students try to receive corrective feedback on their written scientific texts from lecturers. Based on the correlation results, there is a significant relationship between language mindset and corrective feedback preference (0.529); there is a relationship between language mindset and follow-up strategy-based corrective feedback (0.297); but there is no significant relationship between corrective feedback preference and follow-up strategy based corrective feedback (0.160). The conclusion is that scientific text writing guidance activities need to encourage an increase in students' growth language mindset, corrective feedback preferences, and follow-up strategies in writing scientific text.
