Abstract

This study analyzes how Ahmad al-Shara's political speeches construct a new national identity in Syria in the post-conflict context and the transition of power following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework, which encompasses three analytical dimensions: text, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. The research data consists of three official speeches by Ahmad al-Shara delivered during the early period of the transitional leadership and obtained from Arabic media broadcasts. They are then transcribed, translated, and analyzed based on lexical choices, rhetorical strategies, discourse production-consumption processes, and the underlying socio-political context. The results indicate that these speeches reproduce Syrian national identity through a combination of discourses of religiosity, nationalism, and narratives of collective suffering. Linguistic strategies such as the use of emotive diction, the metaphor of the "nation's wound," and the parallel use of masculine and feminine forms serve to construct a message of inclusivity, social reconciliation, and the legitimacy of moral leadership. These findings suggest that Ahmad al-Shara’s political speeches not only function as a political communication tool but also as a discursive practice to reframe Syrian national identity amidst the post-conflict recovery process.

Abstract

Abstract This study is motivated by the widespread use of language on social media, which serves not only as a means of conveying information but also as a vehicle for social action capable of shaping public opinion. The “Tumbler Tuku” case on the Threads platform exemplifies a digital communication phenomenon that elicited diverse responses from netizens due to differing interpretations of the utterances. This study aims to analyze the forms and functions of locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary speech acts in posts and comments related to this case. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach. The data consisted of utterances collected through observation and note-taking. These data were then analyzed based on speech act classification while considering the communicative context. The results indicate that locutionary speech acts are not entirely neutral, as they contain framing elements that can shape the audience’s initial perceptions. Illocutionary speech acts reveal differing communication strategies among speakers, such as expressions of disappointment, accusations, admissions, and commitments as efforts toward conflict resolution. Meanwhile, perlocutionary speech acts demonstrate diverse impacts, ranging from support and criticism to reflective evaluation, indicating that the meaning of utterances is dynamic and influenced by the audience’s perspective. Thus, this study confirms that language on social media plays a significant role in shaping meaning and public opinion.   Keywords: speech acts; pragmatics; social media; threads; public opinion

Abstract

The pethuk besan prohibition is part of the traditional marriage customs in Banaran Village, Kandangan District, Kediri Regency, which forbids the parents of the bride and groom from meeting for the first 40 days after their children’s marriage ceremony. The majority of the village community still obeys this long-standing prohibition today. This research aims to describe the function of the pethuk besan prohibition from the perspective of the community that still adheres to it, using William Bascom’s theory of folklore function. The research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method through interviews with community leaders in Banaran Village. The results indicate that the pethuk besan prohibition has several functions: (1) projection system: a symbolic representation of ideal post-marital family relations; (2) cultural validation: the myth of misfortune as a legitimization of the prohibition; (3) educational function: internalization of values and socialization of rules; and (4) social control function: regulating behavior and enforcing compliance.

Abstract

This study examines the evolving role of minor and side characters in narrative structures traditionally dominated by a central hero. Conventional storytelling in literature, film, and media has long prioritized the protagonist as the primary driver of plot and thematic meaning, often reducing secondary characters to limited, functional roles. This hero-centric model restricts the interpretive depth of narratives and overlooks the potential contributions of less notable individuals. Addressing this gap, the study explores how minor and side characters can function as complex, autonomous agents who enrich narrative development, provide alternative perspectives, and deepen thematic complexity. Using qualitative textual analysis across novels and films, the research investigates narrative techniques that decenter the hero, including multi-perspective storytelling, ensemble structures, and nonlinear narratives. The study is guided by key questions regarding the expanded roles of secondary characters, the strategies used to elevate them, and the broader cultural implications of redistributing narrative focus. Findings suggest that highlighting minor characters not only enhances audience engagement but also challenges hierarchical storytelling conventions and promotes inclusivity in representation. In conclusion, this research shows how minor and side characters are not trivial, yet they have independent stories that go beyond the singular dominance of the hero.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ strategic use of hooks and their perceptions of hooks as rhetorical strategies for enhancing reader engagement, highlighting the gap between conceptual understanding and rhetorical execution. Employing a descriptive quantitative design combined with text-based rhetorical analysis, this study examined the argumentative introductions of 20 applied undergraduate students alongside questionnaire data covering five metacognitive dimensions. The analysis showed an uneven distribution of hook types, dominated by question hooks (45%), followed by scenario (25%) and statistical hooks (15%), while general (10%) and provoking statements (5%) were minimally used, indicating a restricted and formulaic repertoire. Questionnaire results revealed consistently high mean scores, namely awareness (M = 2.78), selection strategy (M = 2.70), reader engagement (M = 2.73), reader orientation (M = 2.76), and writing reflection (M = 2.74), suggesting strong perceived awareness. However, item-level findings exposed key gaps where only 45% reported using varied hooks, 65% considered audience and purpose, and just 20% expressed confidence in writing introductions. These results indicated that students’ awareness remained largely declarative and procedural rather than strategic and flexible. Despite demonstrating relatively high rhetorical awareness, students still exhibited limited rhetorical control, constrained variation, partial audience orientation, and low confidence in constructing introductions. This finding emphasizes the necessity of explicit modeling, strategic variation, audience-oriented practice, and iterative feedback. Overall, the findings positioned student writers within a transitional phase from awareness toward rhetorical control, where metacognitive understanding had not yet fully transformed into effective rhetorical performance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the first language in the Mandarin language acquisition process of 2024 cohort students in the Mandarin Language Education Study Program at the State University of Surabaya. The main problem in the study is the students' difficulties in aspects of pronunciation (phonology), tone system (tonology), and grammar (syntax) of the Mandarin language, which are influenced by their first language. The research method used is a descriptive quantitative approach with data collection techniques through questionnaires to 80 respondents who have diverse first-language backgrounds (Indonesian, local language, and English). The results show that the first language is highly influential and serves as the primary source of interference for students, particularly in phonology; difficulties were found in pronouncing sounds such as "zh," "ch," "sh," "r," and "ü," which do not exist in the first language. In tones, respondents faced challenges in distinguishing tones 1 to 4 due to the absence of a tonal system in their first language. In grammar, a tendency toward direct translation was identified, which triggers sentence structure errors. In addition to linguistic factors, external factors such as the learning environment, lack of practice, and dependence on pinyin also affect the process of mastering the target language. Overall, this study concludes that the first language plays a significant role both as a source of interference and as a supporting factor in Mandarin language acquisition

Abstract

This study aims to analyze emotional expressions in parental advice to children through an anthropolinguistic and pragmatic approach. This research is motivated by the limited studies that discuss the relationship between speech forms, politeness strategies, implicature, emotional expression, and cultural values in Indonesian family communication. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach involving 5 parents and 5 children as research informants. The research data consist of 15 parental advice utterances obtained through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews, documentation, and recordings of family interactions. The data were analyzed through stages of data reduction, classification of speech forms, pragmatic interpretation, and drawing conclusions using Duranti's anthropolinguistic theory, Wierzbicka's language of emotion theory, Brown and Levinson's politeness theory, and Searle's speech act theory. Research results show that parental advice speech contains emotional expressions in the form of affection, hope, concern, anger, care, appreciation, and disappointment, which are realized through both direct and indirect speech. Negative emotions tend to be conveyed through negative politeness strategies and implicature to maintain harmony in interpersonal relationships within the family. This study shows that language in family communication not only functions as a tool for conveying moral messages, but also as a representation of cultural values, emotion regulation, and social practices of Indonesian society. Thus, this study contributes to the development of antrolinguistic and pragmatic research on the relationship between language, emotion, and culture in family communication.

Abstract

Abstract This study analyses the psychological conflict of the character Lala in Edwin's film Posesif (2017) using Carl Gustav Jung's analytical psychology framework, concentrating on three psychic layers: consciousness and ego, personal unconscious and complexes, and collective unconscious and archetypes. The urgency of this research lies in the scarcity of Jungian analytical psychology studies addressing the representation of possessive relationships in contemporary Indonesian cinema. Employing a qualitative method with a literary psychology approach, data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques applied to dialogues, scenes, character expressions, and other audiovisual elements and subsequently analysed through descriptive-qualitative procedures comprising data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Lala experiences inner conflict manifested as anxiety, affective ambivalence, and self-identity disintegration in response to the possessive relationship she endures, with approach-avoidance conflict emerging as the dominant pattern obstructing her individuation process. These findings contribute theoretically by demonstrating the relevance of Jungian complex and archetype concepts in reading the psychological dynamics of female characters within Indonesian film narratives while simultaneously broadening the scope of literary psychology studies to encompass audiovisual media.   Keywords: analytical psychology; Carl Gustav Jung; inner conflict; possessive relationship

Abstract

Motivational content on social media has become increasingly prevalent; however, the ways in which language conveys emotions and persuades audiences in digital interactions remain underexplored. This study aimed to analyze the semantic meanings, emotional expressions, and persuasive language used in motivational social media comments on TikTok and Instagram. The data consisted of [N] comments collected between January and April 2026 through purposive sampling, focusing on comments containing emotional, motivational, and persuasive elements. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the data were analyzed through semantic and pragmatic-semantic techniques to examine how meaning was constructed and interpreted in context. The findings revealed that emotional language dominated the comments, particularly in expressions of praise, empathy, and encouragement. In addition, persuasive meanings were frequently conveyed through motivational statements, analogies, and reflective expressions, which functioned as forms of implicit persuasion. The study also found that meaning was dynamic and shaped by contextual factors, audience perceptions, and communicative intentions. These results contribute to a more profound understanding of how language functions to construct meaning, express emotions, and influence audiences in digital communication environments.
