Abstract

Cognitive stylistics always endeavors to scrutinize texts thoroughly to examine the application of theories and concepts in cognitive linguistics to enhance the understanding of texts that condense information in few words. The current research paper sets itself the task of answering the following question: what kind of cognitive stylistic features are implemented in sports commentary and how cognitive stylistic concepts enhance the interpretation of this kind of discourse. As such, the paper aims to identify the cognitive stylistic features implemented in sports commentary by adopting the threefold model of Jeffries and Mclntyre encompassing: schema theory, cognitive metaphor, and contextual frame theory. Accordingly, the study hypothesizes that cognitive metaphors are the most prevalent cognitive stylistic element implemented in sports commentary. The current paper is limited to the analysis of football commentary presented by two commentators who are John Helm and Peter Drury on four World Cup matches. Results of the analysis verify the above mentioned hypothesis.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the content of negative politeness in netizens' speech in response to the President of Indonesia’s Instagram posts for the 2024–2029 period, highlighting the disparity between expected norms of respectful digital interaction and the often impolite or aggressive language used in political commentaries. The approach used is descriptive qualitative based on pragmatic theory, especially Brown and Levinson's politeness theory, and supported by a cyberpragmatic approach. Data in the form of netizens' verbal speech was collected using note-taking and screen capture techniques, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results of the study show that many comments contain violations of negative politeness, such as unmitigated direct speech, sharp criticism, and even sarcasm that threatens the face of the interlocutor. However, some netizens still show politeness strategies by conveying criticism in a subtle and implicit manner. This phenomenon reflects changes in communication patterns on social media, which are characterized by freer expression but tend to ignore politeness norms. These findings reinforce the importance, especially in terms of language ethics, and open up space for the integration of a cyberpragmatic approach in learning Indonesian.

Abstract

Abstract The act of terror against the Tempo Newsroom through the delivery of physical symbols such as a pig’s head and rat carcasses represents a complex form of threatening communication laden with symbolic meaning. This study examines how the symbolic meanings of these acts of terror can be interpreted through a semiotic approach within the framework of forensic linguistics, and how such symbols function as a form of non-verbal threat communication. The objective of this research is to analyze the pig’s head and rat carcasses as cultural signs used in the context of intimidation against independent media. This qualitative descriptive research employs semiotic theories (Saussure and Peirce), Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic violence, and forensic linguistic analysis of indirect speech acts. Data were obtained through document analysis of online news reports, public statements, and relevant academic literature. The findings reveal that the pig’s head and rat carcasses function as symbolic representamen socially constructed as acts of humiliation and warning. These signs carry connotations of impurity, filth, and threats directed at press institutions as a means of controlling freedom of expression. The symbols serve as indirect speech acts that are coercive and intimidating. The study concludes that symbolic violence in the form of non-verbal physical terror can serve as an effective tool of domination, especially when interpreted within the socio-political and cultural context in which it occurs.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of influencers in the dissemination of new vocabulary through social media. This research employs a qualitative research method involving social media content analysis and literature review. The study focuses on the mechanisms of new vocabulary dissemination and its impact on social communication and the development of the Indonesian language. The findings reveal that influencers utilize social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube to create engaging and relevant content. Creative content in the form of short videos, memes, or interactive stories is often used to introduce new terms. Examples of vocabulary such as "Santuy," "Asyiap," and "Mager" have gained popularity through these platforms. Social media algorithms accelerate the spread of terms by increasing the visibility of content with high interaction. Additionally, direct interactions with followers through live broadcasts or Q&A sessions strengthen the emotional connection between influencers and their audience, facilitating the adoption of new vocabulary. The impact of this phenomenon is the enrichment of colloquial language, the creation of group identity, and the strengthening of relationships within digital communities. This phenomenon has also changed perceptions of the formality of the Indonesian language, with an increasing use of non-standard terms in various contexts, including in marketing. Some companies have even started adopting new vocabulary in their branding strategies. The contribution of this study can serve as a guide for educators and policymakers to understand the dynamics of language development among the younger generation, as well as to design language learning strategies that are more relevant to the language evolving on social media.

Abstract

Globally, this article is related to students' competence in writing articles. This article aims to describe the content of scientific works as the product of the writing learning process based on information technology (IT). A qualitative descriptive method is used to analyze the data, with its application adapted to the guidelines of the conceptual study and theory of the writing process, writing needs analysis for scientific works, and empirical studies on the current conditions of IT-based scientific writing learning. The data analysis techniques in this research involve data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research findings indicate that, in general, students are still categorized as not fully understanding information technology on one hand. However, the scientific works in the form of articles and theses were rated as "good" based on 10 indicators of scientific work assessment. Meanwhile, the use of Bahasa Indonesia in communicating arguments, ideas, and main issues was classified as effective, as the choice of words, sentence usage, and paragraph structure met the requirements for proper and correct language use.

Abstract

This study analyzes the politics of identity and colonial legacy in the novel Pulang by Leila S. Chudori using a postcolonial theory approach, particularly the concepts of Homi K. Bhabha. The novel depicts the experiences of political exiles after the events of 1965, who are forced to live in exile and face identity crises. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study explores how colonialism and political repression shape the characters' social reality and how their identities are dynamic and negotiated in hybrid and ambivalent spaces. The results show that the novel “Pulang” reflects the impact of colonial legacies, which not only influence state policies and social structures but also shape the identities of individuals in liminal positions. Bhabha’s concepts of hybridity, ambivalence, and mimicry reveal the characters' struggles to shape their identities in the transnational realm. In this context, literature serves as a medium to create alternative narratives, challenge state hegemony, and reinterpret the meaning of Indonesian nationalism through a postcolonial framework

Abstract

Poverty and social inequality remain persistent realities in modern society, particularly affecting marginalized groups who are often excluded by unfair economic and political systems. This study aims to analyze the representation of marginalized social classes in the short stories “Social assistance” by Satmoko Budi Santoso and “The Moon That Fell on a Rumbia Roof” by A. Warits Rovi through a sociological approach to literature using Marxist theory. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with primary data derived from the narratives of both short stories and supported by secondary data from theoretical and relevant literary studies. The results show that “Social assistance” portrays the marginalization of Karmin through discrimination in the distribution of social assistance caused by an unjust bureaucratic system, while “The Moon That Fell on a Rumbia Roof” highlights the suffering of Salma, a single mother who experiences labor exploitation and political discrimination. Both stories reveal the inequalities experienced by marginalized classes in economic, social, and political aspects, as well as their diverse responses ranging from submission to symbolic resistance. These works reflect real social disparities and serve as critiques of systems that maintain the dominance of the ruling class. Thus, literature plays an essential role as a reflective medium capable of raising social awareness about issues of injustice. The contribution of this research lies in its effort to enrich sociological studies of literature in Indonesia by examining the representation of marginalized classes and forms of social resistance in contemporary literary works. Future research is suggested to expand the scope to other literary texts with different social and cultural contexts and to combine Marxist theory with interdisciplinary approaches such as feminism or postcolonialism to provide a more comprehensive understanding of social inequality in literature

Abstract

Language in media discourse is not merely a tool of communication but an arena for the reproduction of power and ideology that shapes socio-political reality. The aim of this research is to reveal how textual structures, social cognition, and social context shape the construction of legislative discourse and influence public perceptions of the legitimacy of the DPR (House of Representatives) and the TNI. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with news texts as the primary data source, complemented by supporting literature to strengthen contextual interpretation. The findings show that Detik.com frames the enactment of the TNI Bill by emphasizing the formal legitimacy of the DPR through macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure, including lexical choices, the use of passive constructions, and the omission of dominant actors. The voices of civil society and public protest are presented only in a limited manner, while government actors are foregrounded, directing readers to accept the legislative decision as legitimate and final. The analysis of social cognition reveals that the media shapes collective understandings regarding the legitimacy of state institutions, whereas the social context dimension shows an asymmetrical power relationship between the government and civil society. These findings affirm that media discourse production is not a neutral activity but an ideological instrument to reproduce power domination and control public opinion. This research enhances comprehension of online media discourse regarding military legislation, emphasizing the impact of microstructural strategies and framing on public perception. The findings are expected to serve as a basis for future research to explore cross-media news comparisons, public responses via social media, and the dynamics of legal legitimacy in the context of Indonesian democracy.

Abstract

Despite the increasing body of research on language and identity, heritage language, education, and multilingual practices, a comprehensive bibliometric overview of how these areas have evolved over time remains lacking. This gap limits our understanding of major trends, influential works, and emerging directions in the field. To address this, the study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of language-related research by mapping publication patterns, keyword evolution, and thematic clusters to identify scholarly developments and underexplored areas. A total of 3,638 articles published between 1913 and 2025 were retrieved from the Scopus database using refined search terms such as “first language,” “mother tongue,” “heritage language,” and “foreign language,” and filtered to include publications in the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, and Psychology. MS Excel and VOSviewer were employed to analyze co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrence, and thematic structures. Findings reveal a steady increase in publication output from 2000 to 2024, with a noticeable surge during the COVID-19 pandemic. The United States and United Kingdom remain dominant in research productivity, though rising contributions from Asia and the Global South reflect a more inclusive scholarly landscape. Influential scholars such as Bialystok and Ellis continue to shape discussions on bilingualism and cognition. Major research clusters include bilingualism and identity, heritage language maintenance, language and migration, and cognitive development. The study concludes that language research is interdisciplinary, collaborative, and increasingly global in scope. It recommends greater attention to indigenous language revitalization and digital multilingualism and urges educators and policymakers to apply these insights to foster inclusive, culturally responsive language education and planning.
