Abstract

This study examines childhood trauma as a catalyst for moral growth in the character of Elsa from Disney's Frozen (2013). Using qualitative descriptive methods, this study analyzes dialogues, scenes, and visual symbols that depict Elsa's psychological conflicts, emotional repression, and moral transformation. This study undertakes a qualitative textual analysis of Frozen (2013), with a major focus on key scenes and dialogues depicting trauma and moral evolution. Synthesizing the trauma theory by Caruth, the recovery model by Herman, embodied healing by Van der Kolk, and moral frameworks by Kohlberg, Gilligan, and Tedeschi Calhoun, the thesis shall trace how psychological suffering advances into ethical growth. This analysis reveals that Elsa's experiences of fear, guilt, and isolation develop into empathy, accountability, and compassion, demonstrating the transformative role of trauma in shaping moral consciousness. These findings suggest that moral growth emerges through a process of acknowledging and integrating trauma rather than avoiding it. Furthermore, this study describes how children's animated films, particularly Frozen, can function as cultural narratives that reflect psychological realities and foster an understanding of resilience and ethical maturity. This paper addresses the gap in the literature by integrating trauma and moral development theories in proposing a new interpretive model that explains how animated trauma narratives foster moral and emotional literacy.

Abstract

Ketoprak Gaul 2024 represents the revitalization of Javanese performing arts that combines traditional culture and modern communication styles. This study aims to reveal gender representations and power relations in four Ketoprak Gaul 2024 scripts, namely Ulupati, Sabdha Malaya, Layung Girah, and Luh Tresna, using Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis. A literature review shows that previous studies have focused on literary texts and media, without touching on modern folk performance texts. This study uses qualitative methods with analysis of dialogue, narrative, and stage directions, supplemented by interviews with lay readers and experts as triangulation sources. The focus of the analysis is on the position of the subject, object, and reader to explore the construction of ideology and power in the text. The results show that men are constructed as the dominant subject, while women become subordinate objects with limited space for resistance. However, there is also the potential for social criticism of feudalism and patriarchy through reflective dialogue. This study concludes that Ketoprak Gaul 2024 still reproduces patriarchal discourse structures, but at the same time presents the potential for social criticism of the traditional Javanese gender order, thereby enriching the study of gender representation in modern folk performances.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze onomatopoeia in the French animated film Les Voisins de Mes Voisins sont Mes Voisins, focusing on the forms, structures, and functions of onomatopoeia in supporting the narrative. Given that most onomatopoeia studies concentrate on static media, such as comics or literature, this research introduces novelty by examining onomatopoeia within the dynamic audiovisual context of animated film. The study utilizes the onomatopoeia theory proposed by Enckell and Rézeau (2003) and applies a descriptive qualitative methodology using observation and recording techniques. The findings indicate that onomatopoeia can be classified based on the origin and type of sound, possesses three interrelated structural components, and functions significantly to reinforce atmosphere, clarify actions, and convey non-verbal messages. Theoretically, these findings contribute significantly to the fields of audiovisual and linguistics. Specifically, this research explicates the mechanism of onomatopoeia's interaction with visual narration to construct meaning, thereby expanding the understanding of onomatopoeia as an essential tool for strengthening the cinematic atmosphere and emphasizing non-verbal action/emotion within French animated film.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of the female protagonist’s lifestyle in Berliana Kimberly’s novel Laut Tengah through Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice, especially habitus, capital, and field. The novel portrays Haia, a high‑achieving Muslim student who negotiates modernity, religiosity, and family pressure, yet her lifestyle practices have rarely been analyzed from a Bourdieusian sociological perspective. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research takes Laut Tengah (2024) as the material object and focuses on the construction of Haia’s lifestyle as reflected in narrative descriptions, dialogues, and everyday scenes. Data were collected through close reading and note‑taking, then analyzed using an interactive model involving data reduction, matrix‑based data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal three interrelated lifestyle configurations—independent, simple, and modern—emerging from the interaction between limited economic capital, high cultural capital as an outstanding student, and symbolic capital derived from a religio‑modern image. These configurations function as symbolic strategies for negotiating family‑based symbolic violence, gaining legitimacy in academic and urban spaces, and articulating a modern Muslim female identity within the demands of class and popular culture.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the textual dimensions in news discourse on climate change in the online media Le Monde and Le Figaro, using the Critical Discourse Analysis model developed by Teun A. Van Dijk. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with documentation techniques on four online news articles about climate change published in Le Monde and Le Figaro in 2024, selected based on the theme of the global climate crisis and its visibility on the main page. The analysis was conducted by identifying global themes, news structure schemes, and semantic, syntactic, stylistic, and rhetorical devices based on Van Dijk's text dimension model. The results show that both media outlets highlight the global climate crisis as a macro theme, but organize information differently and utilize contrasting micro devices. Le Monde more frequently uses evaluative lexicon and references to global political actors to frame climate change as a failure of diplomacy, while Le Figaro emphasizes scientific legitimacy through expert quotes and quantitative data, creating an impression of technocratic urgency. These findings clarify how media ideological orientation influences climate crisis meaning-making strategies and demonstrate the usefulness of Van Dijk's text dimension framework for revealing differences in climate framing in French-language mainstream media.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how Fiersa Besari's idiolect and language style in the Atap Negeri video series on YouTube shape his linguistic identity as a digital creator. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data was obtained from three episodes of Atap Negeri (Southeast Sulawesi, Central Papua, and Central Kalimantan) through observation, transcription, and classification of narrative speech. From approximately 101 utterances, 13 idiolectal features and 38 stylistic features were identified and analyzed based on the theories of language variation, stylistics, and digital identity. The results of the study show four main idiolectal tendencies, namely the use of distinctive conjunctions (tapi, setelah, tatkala), local diction (seberes, kawan-kawan), classical diction (musabab, syahdan), as well as slang and emotional expressions (pake, baper, wahhh, alias) that form a poetic style of speech that remains familiar to Generation Z. In addition, the dominant language style includes personification, metaphor, hyperbole, cynicism, and repetition, which serve to reinforce Fiersa's persona as a reflective, humorous, and critical storyteller of social reality. These findings show that Fiersa's linguistic choices serve as a strategy for digital identity construction and language influence that has the potential to shape aesthetic language practices among young audiences. This study contributes to the study of digital sociolinguistics by showing how the idiolect and language style of content creators become symbolic capital in building persona and closeness with online communities.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use and accuracy of conjunctions in descriptive texts and fantasy stories written by seventh-grade junior high school students. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with data in the form of conjunctions in 30 descriptive texts and 30 fantasy texts obtained through writing assignments, which were then analyzed through identification, classification of types, and accuracy assessment based on Chaer and KBBI criteria. The results show that descriptive texts contain 159 conjunctions with 100 correct uses and 59 incorrect uses, while fantasy texts contain 202 conjunctions with 150 correct uses and 52 incorrect uses. Both types of texts were dominated by coordinative conjunctions, especially “and,” but fantasy texts showed greater variation in temporal conjunctions and sequence of events, resulting in a more coherent flow. These findings confirm that genre characteristics influence the choice and function of conjunctions, while also indicating the need to strengthen text-based conjunction learning in descriptive and fantasy text writing in junior high school.

Abstract

This study explores Netflix’s Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022) by using the theories of Intersectionality and Post-National American Studies to understand how racism, class inequality, and institutional failure are shown in the series. The research aims to examine how the show reflects real social problems in American society, especially the unfair treatment of Black, queer, and immigrant communities. The problem addressed in this study is the lack of academic discussion about how true crime stories can reveal deeper issues of social injustice. Using a qualitative method with content analysis, this research analyzes selected episodes and scenes that show how race, class, gender, and citizenship influence the way victims are represented and treated by institutions. The theory of Intersectionality helps explain how different identities overlap to create multiple forms of discrimination, while Post-National Approach provides perspective to criticize the idea of American exceptionalism. The findings show that the series portrays strong examples of racial bias, class prejudice, and neglect from law enforcement, where the voices of Black women and other minorities are often ignored or doubted. The show also reveals how the media tends to sympathize with white perpetrators while minimizing the suffering of minority victims. In conclusion, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is not only a retelling of a true crime case but also a reflection of structural problems in the American justice system, showing how inequality and institutional failure continue to affect vulnerable groups in society.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of feminism in Linda Howard’s novel Cry No More using Sara Mills’ Feminist Stylistics model. Situated within the romance thriller genre, the novel offers a productive site to explore how female agency is negotiated between empowerment and vulnerability. The data consist of selected narrative units featuring the protagonist, Milla Edge, which are analyzed through lexical and syntactic categorization focusing on Subject–Object positioning and reader positioning. The analysis reveals three dominant patterns: Milla is constructed as an active Subject through high-transitivity verbs and agentic nominalizations in her role as leader of the “Finders” organization; she is simultaneously rendered an Object via passive structures and a lexicon of suffering; and key resolutions of the plot often depend on male protectors. These findings demonstrate that Milla’s agency functions as “negotiated empowerment,” thereby contributing to feminist Critical Discourse Analysis of popular fiction by showing how patriarchal norms are both challenged and reproduced at the level of linguistic choice.

Abstract

This study investigates the distribution of verb tenses and modal verbs in Phase F English textbooks in Life Today textbook using a corpus-based approach. A self-compiled mini-corpus was constructed from four textbook units representing narrative, argumentative, hortatory exposition, and discussion texts. The corpus consists of reading passages, selected listening and video transcripts provided in the teacher’s handbook, with the total of 10,438 unigram tokens and 2,736 unigram types. Corpus analysis was conducted using AntConc 4.3.1, focusing on frequency and dispersion patterns of the 100 highest- occurrence of verb forms, modal auxiliaries, and particular lexical verbs. The findings indicate that the language input reflects genre-specific grammatical patterns, for example the dynamic tense variation characteristic of narrative texts or the grammar complexity and lexical variation in discussion texts. However, discrepancies are identified between the grammatical patterns evidenced in the corpus and the explicit language features presented in the textbook, particularly in terms of grammatical scaffolding and the progression of text complexity across units. These findings highlight the need for more explicit and corpus-informed grammatical scaffolding to support genre-based language learning and to enhance the development of students’ receptive and productive skills at the senior secondary level.
