Abstract

This study uses Critical Discourse and Multimodal Metaphor analysis to examine how the meaning of advertisements is constructed through the interaction of various communication modes, namely visual, verbal, audio, and movement. The Marjan Syrup Episode 1 advertisement displays symbols that reinforce the image of Marjan as part of the community's fast-breaking ritual, using metaphors to emphasize the importance of consumption experiences, togetherness, and spiritual values. One of the main findings is the use of words and visuals that position the consumer as the "king" and Marjan as "wealth", which creates an emotional connection and promotes the experience as a satisfying one. The advertisement also depicts the challenges faced by society through visual and audio elements that create a dramatic atmosphere, reminding the audience about the dangers of dependence on technology.

Abstract

This study explores how presuppositions are triggered in Selena Gomez’s interview at signal 2023 has been uploaded on YouTube, focusing on how these implicit meanings contribute to the motivational and emotional tone of her responses. The research applies Yule’s (1996) theory of presupposition, which classifies six types of triggers: existential, factive, lexical, structural, non-factive, and counterfactual. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected from the verified transcript of the interview. The analysis identified 15 presuppositions, with existential and factive types occurring most frequently. These dominant types reveal how Gomez uses personal experiences, emotions, and reflections to convey sincerity and inspire her audience implicitly. The findings indicate that presupposition functions not only as a pragmatic device but also as a rhetorical strategy that strengthens authenticity and engagement in natural conversation. Thus, this study affirms that presuppositions play a vital role in constructing meaning and emotional connection within real-life interviews.

Abstract

Critical discourse analysis is an interdisciplinary approach that examines the relationship between language, text, and social context. Advertisements can be used to convey information, influence audiences, and promote products and services. This research is explained using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) which uses Norman Fairclough's theory that views discourse/text (advertising) as consisting of text, discourse practices, and sociocultural practices. The research method used is qualitative. The purpose of this research is to find the ideology and goals to be conveyed by the advertiser through the language used. Norman Fairclough divides discourse analysis into three dimensions: text analysis, discussion practices, and sociocultural practices. In his model, the text is explained by looking at the structure of the text, such as understanding, sentences, and semantics. In addition, Fairclough's model analysis also pays attention to cohesiveness and coherence, namely the way words or sentences connect with each other to form meaning. Based on this research, it can be seen that the Pucuk Harum tea advertisement uses intelligent language and narrative to spread that the Pucuk Harum tea advertisement uses language understood by the community to spread certain ideologies and goals to the audience. Through a mature production strategy, the Pucuk Harum tea advertisement successfully conveys promotional messages effectively.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of education system management functions and the factors causing teacher competency gaps in high schools. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results showed that the implementation of education management functions (planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling) has not been running optimally. The main problems include mismatched teacher educational backgrounds, low digital literacy, financial constraints, weak monitoring systems, and low teacher welfare. In addition, overlapping tasks and miscommunication were still found in the implementation of school management. To address these problems, the school implemented several strategic steps such as optimizing BOS funds, peer coaching programs, digital literacy training, academic supervision, and providing performance-based incentives. This study confirms that the integration of education management functions is crucial for improving the quality of education sustainably.

Abstract

This study aims to map research trends, identify types of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies employed, analyse their effectiveness on student learning outcomes, and identify research gaps in the utilisation of AI-based learning multimedia at the elementary school level. A systematic literature review (SLR) guided by the PRISMA 2020 protocol was conducted across three internationally reputable databases Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC yielding 29 selected articles from 15 countries (2021–2025) through a rigorous selection process (κ = 0.83). Findings reveal an accelerating growth in publications dominated by East and Southeast Asian countries. Seven categories of AI technology were mapped: adaptive learning systems, augmented reality, conversational AI agents, AI-powered digital games, virtual reality, learning analytics, and generative AI. Cross-study evidence consistently demonstrates the effectiveness of AI-integrated multimedia in improving academic achievement, motivation, and learning personalisation. Five critical research gaps were identified: the scarcity of longitudinal studies, limited research in non-WEIRD contexts, insufficient attention to ethics and data privacy, minimal AI integration in non-core subjects, and the absence of comprehensive teacher professional development frameworks for AI implementation.

Abstract

Entering the 21st century, education is required to equip students with four key competencies, namely critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration, so that they can adapt to the changing times. Science education is an important means of developing these skills, as it emphasizes critical thinking and understanding scientific concepts. However, the abstract nature of science material often poses a challenge for students in understanding and connecting theory with real life. This study aims to examine the effect of learning styles on science concept understanding among students at MTsN 1 Jember. The results of the observation show that there are variations in students' learning styles, including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic, which also affect their level of concept comprehension. Students who receive learning methods that suit their learning styles show better comprehension results. Therefore, teachers are expected to be able to apply flexible and diverse learning strategies by adjusting the methods, media, and learning activities to the characteristics of students' learning styles in order to improve the effectiveness and quality of science learning.

Abstract

The rapid adoption of digital technologies in higher education has increased the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) to support teaching and learning activities. However, the extent to which students utilize the various features available within LMS platforms remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to analyze the utilization of different LMS features in student learning activities. A quantitative descriptive research design was employed involving 102 university students who had actively used an LMS for at least one semester. Data were collected through an online questionnaire developed based on four LMS dimensions: learning content, communication, assessment, and learning monitoring. The instrument demonstrated good reliability with a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.87. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation. The findings revealed that LMS features related to learning content, assessment, and learning monitoring were utilized more frequently than communication features. Assignment submission (M = 4.41), learning materials (M = 4.32), and grade monitoring (M = 4.30) were identified as the most frequently used features. In contrast, chat (M = 1.88) and discussion forums (M = 2.54) showed the lowest levels of utilization. These results indicate that students primarily use LMS platforms as tools for accessing learning resources, completing assessments, and monitoring academic progress rather than as environments for communication and collaboration. The study highlights the need for higher education institutions and instructors to optimize communication-oriented LMS features to enhance student interaction and engagement in digital learning environments.

Abstract

The increasing integration of digital technologies in higher education requires students to be adequately prepared for technology-enhanced learning environments. This study aimed to examine students’ readiness for digital learning in higher education. A quantitative descriptive survey was conducted involving 105 university students selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a 25-item questionnaire covering six dimensions: Technical Readiness, Self-Directed Learning Readiness, Communication Readiness, Motivation Readiness, Access Readiness, and AI/Digital Literacy Readiness. The instrument demonstrated good reliability with a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.88. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation. The findings revealed that students generally demonstrated a high level of digital learning readiness (M = 3.62, SD = 0.57). Technical Readiness and AI/Digital Literacy Readiness were categorized as high, while the remaining dimensions were at a moderate level. These findings suggest that although students possess strong technological competencies, improvements are needed in self-directed learning, communication, motivation, and access to digital resources.

Abstract

Advertisements, as a persuasive communication medium, not only convey information but also play a significant role in shaping social structures through language and visuals. In the context of cigarette advertisements where direct product displays are prohibited, advertisers use jokes, metaphors, and creative narratives to convey messages. This study examines the representation of women in the 76 cigarette advertisement "Pengen Kurus" (Want to be Skinny) using Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis framework. The focus of the research lies in the subject-object position and the position of the reader/viewer to see how gender construction is constructed in media texts. This study uses a qualitative method with observation of advertisements as primary data and secondary sources from related literature. The analysis shows that male characters are positioned as dominant subjects who control the narrative, meanwhile, female characters are positioned as objects of ridicule related to the obsession with thinness. Women's bodies are represented not as self-authoritative but as visual products subject to patriarchal beauty standards. Audiences, at the reader level, are encouraged to laugh at female characters, thereby hegemonicly accepting thinness as a symbol of beauty while normalizing gender inequality. These findings confirm that jokes in advertising are not neutral discourse, but rather ideological instruments that perpetuate patriarchy and the symbolic abuse of women. Therefore, critical discourse analysis is crucial to dismantle biased representations of gender in the media and encourage the emergence of more just and equal constructions.
