Abstract

This article explains the low literacy of Alpha generation children regarding the Sejarah Kampung or the local history where they live. This qualitative research took cases in the community of RW 3, Maharatu, Marpoyan Damai Pekanbaru. Purposively, 14 informants were identified as children aged 11-14 years at primary and junior high school levels and five informants were figures related to literacy activities. The research found that these children, at home or school, never received stories about history or important stories in their village. Their historical awareness does not emerge and character education becomes increasingly difficult. The internal-external factors include the loss of the habit of telling stories due to the death of community leaders and elders, economic limitations which make parents busy earning a living; and the culture of using cellphones, television and other technological and telecommunications equipment has taken over the focus of children's attention. Stories about the Sejarah Kampung are not interesting, and parents and teachers never tell them. The solution to increasing Sejarah Kampung literacy among the Alpha generation is to provide space for integrative learning of local history with other subjects, which can be carried out using varied methods, such as collaboration between schools, history observer communities, and parents. The local history is presented through educational tourism and utilizing social media platforms and other digital forms, adapting to the tendencies of the Alpha generation.

Abstract

The postcolonial Middle East faces complex dynamics between colonial legacies, religious identity and the demands of modernity. The development of Qur’ānic interpretation by contemporary Muslim scholars is a critical response to the hegemony of colonial thought as well as an attempt to reconstruct the meaning of religion in a new socio-political context. The tension between the authenticity of tradition and the need to reinterpret the text marks the intellectual struggle in this area. This article analyzes the contribution of postcolonial Muslim thinkers in transforming tafsir discourse. It also explores the influence of their thought on the development of Islam in the Middle East. This is a qualitative research using a descriptive-interpretative analytical approach to primary and secondary data (study of related literature). Through this research, it can be seen that postcolonial Muslim scholars are divided into three groups, from those who maintain classical theories to those who introduce contextual-historical approaches in tafsir, integrating social criticism, hermeneutics, and epistemological decolonization. Their thinking encourages a religious dialectic that is more inclusive and responsive to global issues. This research contributes to enriching the discussion of contemporary Islamic studies by highlighting the interaction between postcolonialism and Muslim intellectual transformation

Abstract

This research aims to develop history teaching materials based on local wisdom at SMA Muhammadiyah Katingan Tengah. The focus is on local figures H. Ikap and Minun Dehen, as well as the Dayak tradition of Handep Hapakat. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing interviews, observations and documentation studies to understand the implementation of these teaching materials. The findings indicate that integrating local wisdom into history education significantly enhances students' comprehension, motivation and cultural pride. The teaching approach, which includes interactive lectures, group discussions, and field activities, makes the material more contextual and relevant to students' lives. Despite some challenges, such as limited visual media, creative and flexible teaching methods effectively overcome these obstacles. This research highlights the importance of integrating local wisdom to strengthen students' historical understanding, character development, and nationalism, aligning with the principles of the Independent Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka).

Abstract

This study addresses the ongoing problem of passive student engagement in history lessons caused by traditional teacher-centered methods at SMK Yos Sudarso Rembang. This study examines the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in history classes under the Merdeka Curriculum, aiming to enhance students’ motivation, comprehension, and 21st-century skills by promoting active participation, collaboration, and critical thinking. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through structured interviews, observations, and document analysis over five months. The findings reveal that PBL enhances student engagement, motivation, and comprehension of historical material, supported by interactive group activities and project presentations. However, challenges such as aligning projects with diverse student needs, managing time effectively, and providing clear guidelines were identified. Teachers also faced difficulties adapting to facilitative roles and addressing the logistical demands of PBL. Despite these obstacles, PBL demonstrated significant potential in fostering essential 21st-century skills, aligned with the goals of the Merdeka Curriculum. This study concludes that strategic teacher training, improved resource allocation, and practical real-world applications can optimize PBL in history education and beyond. Future research should explore quantitative analyses and the long-term impact of PBL on educational outcomes across various subjects and contexts.

Abstract

Freemasonry in Nusantara predates its documented expansion in the 20th century, which saw the involvement of Dutch and priyayi (Javanese aristocracy) elites. Its origins can be traced to the mid-18th century, specifically to the establishment of the Groot Loge (Grand Lodge) in the Netherlands in 1756. This research investigates the early dissemination of Freemasonry in Nusantara, marking the foundational phase of the movement. It explores the spread of the movement through member networks and how emerging community associations were later restructured into formal lodges or kring (circles) during the era of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Freemasonry was introduced by European communities with the establishment of the first lodge, La Choisie, in Batavia (now Jakarta) in 1764, founded by Radermacher, a key figure who also co-founded the Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen (Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences), an institution that later became highly influential in the Dutch East Indies. This research employs the historical method, encompassing the stages of heuristic research, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Primary sources include the Woordenboek voor Vrijmetselaren, Geschiedenis der Vrijmetselarij, various Masonic history books, and archival materials from lodges in Java. The research findings indicate that the establishment of Freemasonry lodges across various cities in Java and Sumatra served as the main avenue for disseminating Enlightenment ideals and fostering social networks among the colonial elite. Early challenges faced by Freemasonry included resistance from both colonial authorities and the church. The founding of lodges such as  La Choisie (1764), La Fidèle Sincérité (1769), and La Vertueuse (1769) illustrates the social dynamics prevalent in Batavia, where European officials, traders, and entrepreneurs formed connections through Masonic networks. This research contributes to the field of social history, where spiritual associations are often underrepresented in conventional historical analyses. Additionally, this study provides a deeper understanding of colonial history and highlights the role of transnational networks in shaping the societal dynamics of colonial Southeast Asia

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the historical transformation of Pasar Bawah in Bukittinggi from a social history perspective. The study focuses on the transformation of Pasar Bawah from a traditional market that served as a community trading space to an urban social space associated to commercial activities, tourism, community mobility, and social interaction. Pasar Bawah was selected as the research subject because of its strategic location in the center of Bukittinggi and its proximity to Jam Gadang, Pasar Ateh, shopping districts, pedestrian paths, and various centers of community activity. These conditions have allowed Pasar Bawah to function not only as a site of economic transactions but also as a space that reflects the dynamics of urban development and community life. This study employs a historical method with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, documentation, government records, historical documents, and literature reviews. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, historiography, and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that Pasar Bawah has deep historical roots closely connected to the development of Bukittinggi as a trading city. As the city has evolved, the function of Pasar Bawah has shifted from a traditional marketplace to a social space that connects the community’s economic activities, population mobility, and tourism. Interactions among vendors, shoppers, tourists, and the surrounding community foster social relationships based on communication, trust, cooperation, and daily economic activities. This study demonstrates that Pasar Bawah not only holds economic value but also serves as a space of social history that reflects the interconnections between trade, urban development, tourism, and the historical identity of the city of Bukittinggi
