Abstract

Jambi is one of the regions in Indonesia with a unique collection of local historiographies, one of which is the Baju Rajah a clothes that blends the cultural traditions of the Jambi Malay people with the spiritual beliefs of the community during the struggle for independence. This clothes belongs to Ibrahim Abdul Gani, a Red Sash Commander from Parit Deli, Kuala Tungkal, who contributed to defending Indonesia’s independence from 1948 to 1949. It is believed that the Baju Rajah possesses protective powers through the Rajah inscriptions and prayers embroidered on its fabric, making it a spiritual shield against enemy attacks, particularly from Dutch troops. This study aims to analyse the symbolic meaning of the Baju Rajah as a cultural artifact, the context of the Jambi Malay community’s beliefs regarding the power of Rajah, and the role of this artifact in strengthening local identity and narratives of struggle. The method used in this study is a qualitative paradigm through descriptive analysis to explore the relationship between the historical value of the Baju Rajah and its symbolic and social meanings within the Jambi Malay community. The results of the study indicate that, within a historical context, the Baju Rajah functions as a symbol of courage and collective protection. Meanwhile, the social values that can be identified reveal that the Baju Rajah is not merely a sacred text to be recited, but also a cultural artifact that can be seen, touched, and integrated into the spiritual identity of the Jambi Malay community.

Abstract

This article examines the historical traces and epistemological relevance of Francis Bacon’s foundational concept, “knowledge is power”, to the development of Social Sciences. This study adresses need to understand the philosophical roots of modern social inquiry and its implications for contemporary educational practice. This research uses a qualitative approach with a historical and philosophical literature study method. The data sources consist of Francis Bacon's major works, including The Advancement of Learning, Novum Organum, and The New Atlantis. Data analysis was utilized using content analysis techniques with stages of data reduction, concept grouping, and theoretical synthesis. The results demonstrate that Bacon’s thought about knowledge established a critical framework emphasizing empiricism, inductive reasoning, and the systematic deconstruction of cognitive biases. which significantly contributed to the formation of social studies methodology through the use of empirical data and a problem-solving orientation. Ultimately, these findings confirm that Bacon’s epistemology remains highly relevant in the 21st century, particularly in fostering inquiry-based learning, problem-based learning, and critical literacy to develop students who are analytical, reflective, and capable of navigating complex social dynamics.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Pondok Boro Darmin as an alternative residence for migrants in Semarang during the period 1980–1990. The boarding house primarily accommodated low-income informal workers who were excluded from formal housing schemes amidst the city’s rapid urbanization. Employing a historical methodology comprising four stages—heuristics (collecting primary sources, including interviews and archival documents), source criticism (validating data), interpretation (socio-economic analysis), and historiography (historical writing)—this research situates Pondok Boro Darmin within the broader socio-economic transformations of Semarang during that era. Findings reveal that during the 1980s, accelerated economic activities in the vicinity of Pasar Johar and the city center created a demand for flexible, low-cost housing solutions for rural migrants seeking employment in trade, transportation, and informal sectors. Pondok Boro Darmin emerged as a strategic yet modest communal living space that not only provided cost-effective accommodation but also nurtured social resilience through solidarity, unwritten norms, and adaptive networks. By the close of the 1990s’ first decade, shifts in urban planning, rising land values, and increasing pressure for city modernization began to challenge the sustainability of such informal housing solutions. This temporal scope (1980–1990) thus represents a transitional period when Pondok Boro Darmin stood at the intersection of grassroots urban survival strategies and the growing tension between informal housing and formal urban development agendas

Abstract

This study examines the historical and educational significance of the Sido Ing Rejek Tomb in Sakatiga, Ogan Ilir, primarily addressing the lacuna in academic research and public awareness regarding its potential as a local historical resource. The research employed a library-based methodology, focusing on the synthesis and critical analysis of pertinent secondary literature (historical texts, journals, and local records) to reconstruct the role of royal cemeteries in Palembang historiography and their application in education. Findings reveal the Tomb's dual role as a material and symbolic heritage. Materially, it provides tangible evidence for historical and archaeological analysis; symbolically, it embodies the legacy of anti-colonial resistance, collective memory, and cultural identity in South Sumatra. The analysis underscores the significance of oral traditions, ritual practices, and community narratives in ensuring the Tomb's generational salience. This approach contributes to historical discourse by integrating local perspectives often marginalized by dominant narratives, while also illustrating the site's capacity for historical education and character development. The research is limited by its reliance on secondary sources, specifically the absence of direct field research or archaeological validation; consequently, the empirical veracity of the analysis is preliminary. This constraint, however, creates ample opportunities for future interdisciplinary research engaging historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, and local communities. In conclusion, the Sido Ing Rejek Tomb should be conserved and developed not merely as a historical site but as a crucial vehicle for historical education and sustainable cultural tourism, making it an invaluable asset for reinforcing academic inquiry and national identity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of PT Petrokimia Gresik in the development of football in Gresik from the 1980s to the early 1990s, focusing on social support and the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies, as well as how sports were utilized as a social and promotional tool. Utilizing historical research methods and Bowen's CSR framework retrospectively, this study analyzes the internal and external factors influencing the trajectory of the Persegres team. The results indicate that PT Petrokimia Gresik's substantial investment in infrastructure and athlete development through the application of CSR principles successfully established Persegres as a prominent football power while simultaneously building a positive corporate image. However, the team subsequently experienced a decline and relegation in 1995-1996 due to changes in the competition structure, reduced financial support, internal conflicts, incidents of supporter violence, and match-fixing practices. It is concluded that the success and sustainability of a football team are highly dependent on consistent corporate support, robust internal management, and adaptation to external dynamics. This study provides an academic contribution by highlighting the complexity of interactions between CSR principles, sports development, and social dynamics within the context of industrial and community development.

Abstract

This article examines the assistance provided by the Soviet Union to Indonesia during the preparation for the IV Asian Games in Jakarta in 1962 and the subsequent impact of that assistance on the hosting of the Games. The research employs the historical method, which consists of five stages: Topic Selection, Source Collection (Heuristics), Verification, Interpretation, and Historiography. The data sources for this research are divided into Primary and Secondary Sources. Primary Sources were obtained from various archives related to the Indonesian-Soviet partnership and the preparation for the IV Asian Games, accessible at the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI). Furthermore, Primary Sources also include contemporary newspapers and magazines that reported on the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and the Soviet Union, as well as news concerning the IV Asian Games. Secondary Sources utilized in this study include relevant research and books discussing the Indonesia-Soviet Union relationship and the Asian Games. The findings of this research indicate that the assistance provided by the Soviet Union government to the Indonesian government was vital in the successful organization of the IV Asian Games in 1962, particularly concerning the construction of the sports complex that served as the venue for the largest multi-sport event on the Asian continent. This construction received funding and technical assistance from the Soviet Union. Furthermore, the preparation for the IV Asian Games illustrates the close diplomatic relationship between Indonesia and the Soviet Union, especially during the period of Guided Democracy under the administration of President Sukarno.

Abstract

This research examines the dynamics of public health, sanitation, and settlements in Gemeente Semarang during the period of 1906–1942, when rapid urbanization gave rise to various social and environmental issues. The focus of the research is directed toward how settlement conditions and sanitation systems were at the beginning of the Gemeente's formation, how disease outbreaks spread within that context, and how the colonial government responded through health management policies and kampung improvement. The primary objective of this research is to historically reconstruct the linkage between urban spatial planning, sanitation, and the emergence of disease outbreaks in Semarang. The method used is the historical research method with the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. This research utilizes several primary sources such as Van Wonen en Bewonen (1913), De Locomotief (15 January 1908), Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad (22 July 1918), Verslag van den toestand der gemeente Semarang (1918–1930), Gedenkboek Semarang (1931), as well as archives from the Koninklijke Bibliotheek and KITLV Netherlands. The results of the study show that the urbanization process caused spatial inequality between organized European settlements and indigenous kampungs that were crowded and unhygienic. This condition triggered the spread of cholera, malaria, influenza, plague, and dysentery outbreaks, with high mortality rates among the indigenous population. As a response, the Gemeente Semarang government implemented public health policies through the construction of a rioleering (sewerage) system (1913–1923) and the kampongverbetering (kampung improvement) program (1917–1938) which were oriented toward environmental improvement and social facilities.

Abstract

This study examines the development of classical Islamic historiography through five main schools: the Yemeni, Medinan, Iraqi, Syrian, and Persian schools. The aim of this study is to identify the characteristics, historiographical approaches, and contributions of each school to the formation of Islamic civilization’s history. This study uses a qualitative approach and historical research methods, employing critical analysis of library sources through four main stages: heuristics, collecting primary and secondary sources, such as classical texts, historical chronicles, and modern scientific works. Next, source criticism includes evaluating the authenticity and credibility of the source. Interpretation involves analyzing the meaning and socio-cultural context of each data. Historiography is the systematic arrangement of the interpretation results into a narrative. The results of this study indicate that each school possesses distinct characteristics. The Yemeni school emphasizes mythological and prophetic stories. The Medinan school focuses on the verification of sanad (chain of transmission) and the hadith methodology. The Iraqi school developed political and chronological history writing. The Syrian school was influenced by Umayyad rule and the Arab spirit, while the Persian school introduced rationality and administrative systematics in historiography. This research contributes to strengthening the methodology of classical Islamic historiography by clarifying source analysis techniques and data validity criteria often overlooked in previous research. Furthermore, it broadens the understanding of the early Muslim intellectual tradition that shaped a paradigm of historical writing influential up to the modern era.

Abstract

This study investigates the history of the swiftlet nest business at Gua Sibarasok in Pasar II Singkuang Village, Muara Batang Gadis District, Mandailing Natal Regency. It aims to describe the historical background of the business's emergence and analyze its socio-economic impact on the community. This qualitative study employs a historical method encompassing four stages: heuristic, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Findings reveal that the swiftlet nest business at Gua Sibarasok originated from the cave's discovery in 1989. Initially, it was privately managed. However, in 1990, the Singkuang Village community claimed rights to Gua Sibarasok, establishing it as a community-owned enterprise with management subsequently transferred to PT Mujur Timber. In 1993, the Singkuang Village community formed KUD Singkuang to manage Sibarasok Cave. Yet, in 1999, KUD Singkuang handed over management to PT Anugerah Langkat Makmur, which continues to manage it today. The presence of Sibarasok Cave, containing high-quality swiftlet nests, has significantly contributed to improving the economy and generating employment for the residents of Pasar II Singkuang Village. Despite these positive contributions, the swiftlet nest business at Sibarasok Cave has also led to negative impacts, including various community conflicts and environmental degradation.
