Abstract

The Makan Bajamba ritual in Nagari Koto Tangah is a unique Minangkabau tradition that blends Islamic values with local customs. This tradition embodies the syncretism of Islamic culture and Minangkabau customs, rooted in the philosophy of Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah (ABS-SBK). This research aims to analyze how this syncretism is reflected in the practice of Makan Bajamba and to examine its potential as a medium for historical education and the preservation of cultural values. A qualitative-descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and literature review. The findings indicate that Makan Bajamba serves not only as a ritual tradition but also as a medium for transmitting values of togetherness, respect, and harmony between religious teachings and customs. Islamic influences are evident in the prayers and dining etiquette that promote simplicity, while customary values are reflected in the ritual's social structure and symbolic elements, which emphasize communal unity and social hierarchy. This tradition holds relevance for historical education, as it integrates local history learning with moral and cultural values that can be instilled in younger generations. This study concludes that Makan Bajamba is a tangible manifestation of cultural acculturation and serves as a model for local wisdom-based history education. As a cultural heritage, this tradition requires preservation through collaborative efforts involving the community, government, and educational institutions to maintain its values. Additionally, preserving Makan Bajamba contributes to strengthening the Minangkabau cultural identity in the increasingly homogenized context of globalization.

Abstract

The Baing Yusuf Grand Mosque plays a significant role in the history of Islamic dissemination and the formation of the local community's Islamic identity. This article discusses how Islam in Indonesia developed by adopting local culture without losing its fundamental teachings, aligning with Gus Dur's concept of Islam's Indigenization (Pribumisasi Islam). The mosque's architecture reflects a blend of Islamic culture and local traditions, featuring distinctive elements such as domes, calligraphy, and multi-tiered roofs characteristic of Javanese and Sundanese architecture. Beyond its function as a place of worship, the mosque has also served as a center for education, social activities, and dakwah (Islamic propagation) since its establishment by Syeikh Baing Yusuf in the 19th century. This research employed a literature review method to explore the historical, architectural, and social aspects of the mosque. The findings indicate that the Baing Yusuf Grand Mosque is not merely a religious symbol but also a continuously evolving hub of Islamic activity. It plays a vital role in building a strong Muslim community and has become a destination for religious tourism. Based on the findings from this literature review, it can be concluded that the Baing Yusuf Grand Mosque holds significant importance as a cultural and identity symbol for Muslims in Purwakarta.

Abstract

The development of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago remains a significant area of scholarly inquiry. Classical Islamic civilization became a dominant influence on the subsequent evolution of Islam in the region. Islamic civilization developed in various ways, including the construction of mosques by scholars during the classical period. Al-Musthofa Mosque stands as one such historical mosque that played a crucial role in the progression of Islam in Indonesia. The mosque's continued function as a gathering place for Muslim communities, along with the presence of handwritten Qur'anic manuscripts and local historical narratives, attests to the advancement of Islamic civilization in this area. This research aims to examine historical development of Islamic teachings and analyze classical Islamic civilization through the lens of the Al-Musthofa Mosque in Bogor. Employing a qualitative research design, this study utilizes historical analysis as its primary methodological instrument. Primary data were collected through observation and interviews, while the secondary data was obtained using documentation techniques used to collect supporting data. The research findings reveal historical evidence suggesting that Islamic civilization was readily accepted through da'wah approaches, as exemplified by the historical trajectory of Islam's development facilitated by the Al-Musthofa Mosque. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by uncovering historical evidence of Islamic civilization in Indonesia and serves as a valuable reference for future research in Indonesian Islamic history.

Abstract

This research is the result of observing and analyzing the traditional Batak ritual, namely Mangongkal Holi, in Lumban Sinantik, Humbang Hasundutan Regency, North Sumatra. This paper aims to explore and explain the social and cultural values contained in this traditional ritual and how it relates to today's belief systems. During the observation, the author found that this unique ritual has survived and remains deeply ingrained in the Toba Batak people, even though its implementation has been adjusted to the teachings of Christianity. The social and cultural values are still embedded in the ritual, which is why it continues to survive and hold a special meaning for the Toba Batak people. To approach this problem, a historical approach is used and analyzed with qualitative methods. The data was collected through literature studies, interviews, and direct observation of these traditional rituals in the Lumban Sinantik area and was analyzed qualitatively. This paper concludes that this traditional ritual instills solidarity among the descendants of the Batak ethnicity. It serves as a means of strengthening intergenerational relations in the Batak lands and as a historical legacy of the ancient belief system, which has been adapted to include elements of Christianity and Islam

Abstract

Tafsir Rahmat by Oemar Bakry is one of the scholarly legacies of Indonesian Islamic scholars that deserves to be studied and appreciated. This tafsir employs a communicative and informative language style, making it easier for readers to understand the meanings of Qur’anic verses. Its emergence served as a response to various socio-religious issues of the time, which had not been adequately addressed by previous Qur’anic interpretations. This study uses a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach-collecting data and analyzing it as the basis for drawing conclusions. The findings show that Tafsir Rahmat consists of one volume, written over a period of three years (1981-1983), published in 1984, and translated into Sundanese in 1986 by M. Sulaiman in three volumes. It falls under the category of tafsir bil al-ra'yi, with a lughawi (linguistic) style, and follows the ijmali (global) method. This study contributes to revealing the significance of Tafsir Rahmat as part of the communicative and contextual heritage of Nusantara Qur’anic exegesis. Moreover, it clarifies the interpretive methods used by Oemar Bakry and highlights the relevance of his work to the socio-religious dynamics of his time, while also enriching the body of local tafsir literature that has long been underrepresented in academic discourse.

Abstract

As a living archive of the past, Indonesian history serves as a bridge connecting the past and present to reveal the wisdom and diversity of its people across the archipelago. South Sulawesi, as an integral part of this historical inheritance, has developed its own distinct narrative, including the existence of the Gowa Kingdom as a preserver of ancient traditions. Therefore, this research aims to further investigate and promote the Lontara Bilang script to enhance and broaden awareness of the history and values inherent in the cultural heritage of South Sulawesi, particularly within the context of the Gowa Kingdom. This research is a qualitative exploration employing descriptive analysis techniques. Data were collected through library research, involving the analysis of materials from library sources. The research process comprised Heuristics, Source Criticism, Interpretation and Historiography. The finsings of this investigation indicate that the significance of Lontara Bilang extends beyond its use in writing within the kingdom. More significantly, Lontara Bilang has played a crucial role in maintaining, reinforcing and preserving Gowa’s rich and historic cultural identity. The preservation of Lontara Bilang, as a custodian of the history and cultural heritage of the people of the archipelago, particularly the people of Gowa, must be preserved for the future. It should serve as a cultural symbol that embodies the unique identity of the people of South Sulawesi, especially Makassar or the Kingdom of Gowa at that time. Therefore, Lontara Bilang provodes a solid foundation and reference for the development of knowledge and science in the future.

Abstract

This study discusses the development of road infrastructure and irrigation systems during the Dutch colonial period in Kerinci as part of technical, economic, and spatial management strategies. This study employs a qualitative approach with methods based on digital archives, colonial photographs, historical maps, and academic secondary sources. The data were analyzed through visual interpretation, gravitational hydrology analysis, and tracing the historical context of the development. The results show that the irrigation and road systems built by the colonists were designed using simple yet effective civil engineering principles, such as utilizing natural elevation, reinforcing soil with local materials, and integrating drainage and transportation functions. This infrastructure not only served as a logistics distribution and agricultural irrigation but also as an instrument of territorial control and landscape transformation. This research makes a new contribution by interpreting colonial infrastructure as environmental engineering works that were adaptive to the physical conditions of Kerinci. Thus, this study enriches our understanding of colonial engineering heritage and its relevance to conservation, historical reconstruction of space, and environmental sustainability studies in tropical mountainous regions.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze the socioeconomic dynamics of the community in Sungai Aur District, West Pasaman Regency, from a historical perspective. A qualitative research method was employed, utilizing interviews, observation and documentation. The findings indicate that in the initial stages of the transmigration program, the community received agricultural land for cultivation to improve economic well-being. However, many residents planted oil palm without adequate knowledge, influenced by the economic success of surrounding areas. Recognizing the geographical unsuitability, some community leaders encouraged the cultivation of more appropriate crops like coffee. Conversely, a portion of the community chose to sell their land to newcomers, thereby losing their primary assets and transitioning to agricultural laborers. This highlights the importance of land management strategies and human resource capacity building in supporting the success of transmigration programs.
