Abstract

This article entitled Structural Metaphor in The Novel A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, aims to identify and analyze structural metaphors and their underlying meanings. The data were collected from dialogues and narrative passages, specifically phrases, clauses, and sentences within the novel. Employing a documentation method and note-taking technique, the study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach. The analysis was presented in informal through descriptive discussion in paragraph form. The theories applied in this study were the theory of metaphor proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (2003) to analyze the type of metaphor, especially structural metaphor. This study focused on finding structural metaphors out of three types of metaphors, and also focused on analyzing the meaning of the metaphor. The result of the study shows that there are representations of structural metaphor in the novel, and all the meanings implied by each of the metaphors are found, highlighting their central role in expressing grief and emotional transformation. These metaphors illuminate the protagonist's internal struggles and reveal universal aspects of the human experience, such as loss, grief, resilience, and the search for connection.

Abstract

This research analyzed how the study of derivational morphemes could help students who take IELTS test to deal with listening questions. The data was taken from Cambridge books which shows a wide range of derivation that paraphrase the sentence in the questions; thus, test-takers could easily identify the answer in the audio. The theory was proposed by Andrew Carstairs-McCarthy in his book entitled “An introduction to English Morphology: Words and Their Structure” and Noel Burton Roberts in his book Analyzing Sentences; An Introduction to English Syntax. The method used was qualitative method whereas all data was analyzed using description and syntactic tree. The study found that there were some changes in lexical categories namely noun to verb, verb to noun, verb to adjective, adjective to verb, verb to adverb, and adverb to verb. Those changes of lexical categories resulted in the changes of syntactic structure in the sentences which could be helpful for the test-takers in dealing with the listening section.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the microplastic campaign on the @greenpeaceid account builds an ecological narrative through a combination of language and visual communication design. The data sources are campaign materials, including text on posters and captions. The data used is qualitative data in the form of linguistic and visual elements. The method used is descriptive qualitative with two analytical frameworks: Arran Stibbe's ecolinguistics and visual communication theory, including Kress and van Leeuwen's visual grammar. Ecolinguistics analysis focuses on identity stories, framing, and erasure, while visual analysis covers visual hierarchy, AIDA persuasion structure, color selection, and layout. The results show that the campaign constructs identity stories that position the public as victims of systemic microplastic exposure, while industry and policymakers are framed as the main actors responsible for solutions. Visually, the campaign utilizes dark and earth tones, bold typography, and hierarchical composition to emphasize the immediacy of the threat and the urgency of action. The integration of linguistic and visual dimensions produces an ecological narrative that rejects the individualization of environmental blame and encourages collective action based on regulation.

Abstract

This qualitative research of linguistic landscapes in Subak Sembung Ecotourism Area Denpasar. in order to understand how written language in the public domain portrays identity and social dynamics. The study uses a sociolinguistic approach to analyze 11 data samples according to the sign creator's category (top-down and bottom-up), the Spolsky and Cooper (1991) taxonomy, and Landry and Bourhis theory of language functions. The study's primary focus is on the use of language and its symbolic and informational functions in public texts at locations that combine traditional agriculture with sustainable tourism. According to research, the majority of public discourse is conducted in Indonesian, followed by English and Balinese. The use of Balinese script as a symbol of local cultural identity reflects the symbolic function, while the informative function is more prominent in the transmission of practical instructions. Nevertheless, there were overlaps in writing techniques and deviations from grammatical rules. The study concluded that, in the context of ecotourism, it is crucial to standardize writing in accordance with national standards and strengthen the Balinese script in order to preserve culture (Landry & Bourhis, 1997).

Abstract

This article examines advertisements for male enhancement drugs on online marketplaces that tend to display aspects of male and female sensuality. The signs of sensuality in the advertisements are analyzed using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. This study employs a qualitative methodological approach. The data sources consist of advertisements for male enhancement drugs found on various popular online marketplaces in Indonesia. The research data comprise 40 advertising posters collected through literature review, documentation techniques, and screenshot capture. After the data were collected, categorization, data reduction, and analysis were conducted based on Roland Barthes’ semiotic theoretical framework. The results show that advertisements for male enhancement drugs in online marketplaces tend to exploit the sensuality of both men and women, which is manifested through visual components and advertising text. At the level of denotation, advertisements are generally realized through visual elements such as images of women and/or men, product images, logos, colors, and illustrations, while the textual components include linguistic units in the form of words, phrases, and sentences. At the level of connotation, male enhancement advertisements construct meanings related to sensuality, such as female seduction, assumptions of sexuality associated with white-skinned individuals, husband–wife romantic relationships, and male virility. These aspects of sensuality are reinforced through the use of hyperbolic language in the advertisements. Meanwhile, the myths embedded in male enhancement advertisements tend to associate male sexual satisfaction with certain socio-cultural assumptions, including female sexual satisfaction, family harmony, masculinity, and male superiority. The myths also represent male virility as being measured by the ability to dominate women.

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of person deixis in news texts published on the Cable News Network (CNN) International Website. Based on Levinson’s (1983) theory of deixis, this research aims to identify the types of person deixis and determine their dominant usage in news discourse. A mixed-method approach was applied, combining qualitative descriptive analysis and quantitative frequency analysis. The data were obtained from selected CNN news articles published between August and December 2021. The findings show that third person deixis is the most dominant type, reflecting the objective and informative nature of news reporting. First person deixis appears mainly in direct quotations, while second person deixis is used in limited contexts to address readers or quoted participants. This study concludes that person deixis plays an essential role in conveying information clearly and maintaining coherence in news texts.
