Abstract

Background: Aging is a complex biological process characterized by declining adaptive capacity, immune dysfunction, cellular damage, and persistent low-grade inflammation known as inflammaging. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is widely used to assess age-related inflammatory changes; however, findings in aged rat models remain inconsistent and may vary according to strain, age, tissue, sex, metabolic status, and inflammatory stimuli. Objective: This systematic review evaluated changes in IL-6 levels or expression in aging Rattus norvegicus compared with younger rats and explored biological and experimental factors contributing to response heterogeneity. Methods: The review followed the PECO framework and PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. Studies involving rats with identifiable age groups and IL-6 as an outcome were included. Risk of bias was planned using the SYRCLE Risk of Bias Tool. Due to substantial heterogeneity in age, strain, tissue, inflammatory stimuli, and IL-6 assessment methods, findings were synthesized narratively. Results: Evidence indicated heterogeneous age-related IL-6 responses. Several studies reported increased IL-6 in aged rats, particularly following lipopolysaccharide stimulation, whereas others found no consistent increase in plasma IL-6 despite increased tissue expression. Conclusion: IL-6 may reflect inflammatory changes during aging, but it is not a universally elevated biomarker in aged rats. Its interpretation should consider tissue compartment, strain, age, sex, metabolic status, and inflammatory stimuli.

Abstract

This study examines the determinants of regency/city gross regional domestic product at current prices (GRDP-CP) in Bali during 2017-2025, focusing on human development, unemployment, local fiscal capacity, the COVID-19 shock, and the SARBAGIA area dummy. A balanced panel of 81 observations covering nine regions and nine years is estimated using a cross-section random-effects Panel EGLS model with White-period robust standard errors. GRDP-CP is reported in billion rupiah, while local own-source revenue (PAD) is also presented in billion rupiah. The results show that the Human Development Index is positively associated with nominal GRDP, the open unemployment rate is negatively associated with nominal GRDP, and PAD has a positive elasticity. The COVID-19 and SARBAGIA dummies are statistically insignificant. The findings underline the roles of human capital, labor-market conditions, and local fiscal capacity in explaining differences in the nominal scale of regional economies in Bali.

Abstract

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, are characterized by progressive neuronal dysfunction and loss. Neuroinflammation, immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction are increasingly recognized as interconnected mechanisms in disease progression. The gut–brain axis provides a bidirectional link between the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system through neural, immune, endocrine, and metabolic pathways. Gut microbiota dysbiosis may contribute to neurodegeneration through impaired intestinal barrier integrity, altered microbial metabolites, systemic inflammation, and blood–brain barrier dysfunction. Changes in short-chain fatty acids, tryptophan-derived metabolites, bile acids, and microbial products such as lipopolysaccharide may modulate immune and glial signaling, including TLR4/NF-κB and NLRP3 pathways. Evidence is particularly prominent in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, although microbial alterations remain heterogeneous across studies. The gut–brain axis represents a potentially modifiable interface linking microbial dysbiosis and neuroinflammation. Microbiome-targeted interventions show promising but inconsistent results. Further integration of microbiomics, metabolomics, immunophenotyping, and longitudinal clinical data is needed to establish causality and advance precision strategies for neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract

Waste management represents an increasingly complex environmental governance challenge, requiring an approach that goes beyond mere waste handling to include reduction at the source and support for the national green transition agenda. This study aims to evaluate waste management through the lens of Good Environmental Governance (GEG) and analyze its alignment with the national green transition agenda, focusing on the context of Kendal Regency. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted on scholarly literature from the past five years regarding waste management, GEG, public participation, institutional aspects, collaboration, the circular economy, and environmental sustainability. The synthesis identifies six key aspects determining the quality of waste management: regulation and law enforcement; public participation; transparency and accountability; institutional capacity and collaboration; management effectiveness; and orientation toward the circular economy and green transition. The findings indicate that Kendal Regency’s primary challenge lies in low rates of waste reduction at the source, resulting in a management system that remains largely focused on waste handling. The study concludes that strengthening GEG—through governance that is participatory, transparent, accountable, collaborative, and circular-economy-oriented—is essential to drive the transformation of waste management in Kendal Regency toward a more ecological and sustainable system.

Abstract

Background: Anemia remains an important nutritional problem among adolescent girls and young women. Female university students are vulnerable to iron deficiency because of menstrual blood loss, inadequate dietary iron intake, and irregular eating patterns. This study evaluated the effectiveness of Galo-Galo honey supplementation combined with iron tablets in increasing hemoglobin levels among female midwifery students. Methods: A quantitative pre-experimental study with two pretest-posttest groups was conducted among 38 female students of the Bachelor of Midwifery Program, Faculty of Health Sciences, Universitas Baiturrahmah, Padang. Participants were allocated into two groups of 19 students. One group received iron tablets combined with Galo-Galo honey, while the comparison group received iron tablets. Hemoglobin was measured before and after the intervention using an EasyTouch GCHb device. Results: In the iron tablet plus Galo-Galo honey group, mean hemoglobin increased from 12.4 ± 1.2534 g/dL before intervention to 13.2 ± 1.2810 g/dL after intervention, representing a mean increase of 0.8 g/dL (p<0.001). In the iron-tablet group, mean hemoglobin increased from 11.9 ± 0.957 g/dL to 12.6 ± 0.875 g/dL, representing a mean increase of 0.7 g/dL (p<0.001). Conclusion: Both interventions were associated with significant increases in hemoglobin levels. The observed increase was numerically greater in the combination group; however, the source document does not report a statistical test directly comparing the magnitude of hemoglobin change between groups. Further controlled studies with larger samples are required to establish the additional effect of Galo-Galo honey beyond iron supplementation.
