Abstract

Since the issuance of the 2013 curriculum (K13), many Islamic senior secondary schools (MA) offer English as Cross Interest Subject (EaCIS) in addition to compulsory English subject (CES). The subject is designed to help students expand their English language competence beyond their major courses and what they have learnt from CES. Due to a reduction in the number of hours allocated for CES in the K13, teaching EaCIS has become a way for certified English language teachers to accrue the required hours to receive certification payment. This qualitative study was designed to understand teachers' perceptions and experiences of teaching EaCIS and shares the findings from the interview and focus group data collected from six English language teachers teaching at state Islamic senior secondary schools (MAN) in Indonesia. Findings reveal that whilst EaCIS provides an opportunity for teachers to improve student's English abilities, none of the participants received support to teach it. Whilst it is acknowledged that this is a small study and the findings cannot be generalised to the broader population of teachers responsible for teaching EaCIS, the experiences shared by participants provide valuable and interesting insights into curriculum change. Recommendations for improving the implementation of EaCIS and the future design of curriculum change initiatives in Indonesia are discussed. Keywords: English as Cross Interest Subject, teacher experiences, teacher perceptions, curriculum change, K13 curriculum

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how deeply ingrained common sense can become as a hegemonic tool of the dominant group, normalizing and naturalizing ideas to the point where they feel like accepted and indisputable realities that can guide actions and thoughts, while also influencing social interactions and identity formation of subaltern groups. This study uses qualitative and descriptive analysis methodologies within the theoretical framework of Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony, it is centered on the novel The Sellout by African-American author Paul Beatty that focuses on the interactions and characters in the novel to see how common sense acts as a hegemonic tool that upholds the beliefs, values, and viewpoints of dominant groups. The researcher discovered around forty-two instances of the concept of "common sense" function in the novel The Sellout. However, the total may surpass this figure based on broader interpretations. The researcher picked nine cases that were most pertinent to the research aims of this article. This study found that the novel The Sellout, when analyzed using qualitative and descriptive methods in the context of Antonio Gramsci's approach, successfully captures the function in which common sense acts as a hegemonic tool for upholding the beliefs, values, and viewpoints of dominant groups and, as a result, can influence social dynamics and personal identities

Abstract

In the contemporary era, discussions around gender equality and women's representation had gained significant traction, emphasizing the need for equal rights and opportunities regardless of gender. This research explored the portrayal of feminist values through the movie “Losmen Bu Broto,” directed by Ifa Isfansyah and Eddie Cahyono. Using Roland Barthes' semiotic framework, the research analysed how the movie represented feminism by examining the characterization of its female protagonists, including Bu Broto, Mbak Pur, and Jeng Sri. The movie, adapted from a TV series and set in a traditional Javanese context, was notable for its strong female characters who challenged societal norms. This research employed qualitative research methods, including detailed scene analysis and character examination, to investigate how these characters embodied feminist ideals. The analysis focused on various feminist theories, including Radical Feminism; Marxist and Socialist Feminism; Liberal Feminism; Black Feminism; and Postmodern Feminism, to understand how the movie's narrative reflected and critiqued traditional gender roles. The findings revealed that “Losmen Bu Broto” presented a nuanced portrayal of feminist values, illustrating women's strength, independence, and resistance to patriarchal structures. Through its characters' appearances, dialogues, and actions, the movie navigated the intersection of feminism and Javanese culture, highlighting both the challenges and advancements in the representation of women. This research contributed to the broader discourse on feminism in media by providing a comprehensive examination of how feminist ideologies were depicted and challenged within a culturally specific context

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of VoiceSpice as a language-learning tool, focusing on its usability, advantages, limitations, and overall impact on students' speaking practice by the students’ perceptions. Moreover, much of the current literature focuses on quantitative measures or general outcomes, leaving a gap in understanding students' personal experiences and challenges with recording technology. Without exploring these individual perspectives, it is difficult to address the barriers that may prevent students from fully leveraging these tools for reflective and autonomous learning. The sample in this study consisted of 15 EFL students who studied English at Universitas Aisyah Pringsewu. Data was collected through observation to get a direct picture of the learning activities carried out, then questionnaires were given to all students and to get more in-depth information, after that doing interview were conducted with 15 students. The survey and feedback results indicate that voice recording has proven to be a useful tool for supporting speaking practice in language learning, with user feedback indicating ease of use, convenience, and support for speaking skill development. The conclusion of VoiceSpice has demonstrated its utility in supporting speaking practice, with users praising its ease of use, convenience, and positive impact on speaking skills. While effective for basic language practice, limitations such as unstable sound quality and the absence of advanced features, including pronunciation checking, were noted. This study suggests that improvements in audio quality and the addition of accuracy-checking features could enhance its effectiveness and usability
