Abstract

Religious extremism continues to pose a major challenge in contemporary Islamic societies, particularly in plural contexts where competing interpretations of the Qur’an often generate exclusivism and intolerance. While existing studies on religious moderation largely approach this issue from sociopolitical or policy-oriented perspectives, there remains a significant gap in understanding how moderation is constructed as an ethical-hermeneutical practice within local Qur’anic exegetical traditions. This study aims to analyze how KH. Misbah Mustofa formulates religious moderation (wasat}iyyah) as an ethical hermeneutic in al-Iklīl fī Ma’āni al-Tanzīl, and to identify the moral principles and interpretive strategies underlying this framework. Employing a qualitative, library-based methodology, the research utilizes thematic content analysis of selected Qur’anic verses related to justice, balance, tolerance, and human responsibility as khalīfah fī al-ard}. The findings reveal that KH. Misbah conceptualizes moderation not as a political compromise or ideological midpoint, but as a dynamic ethical process that integrates textual interpretation with moral reasoning and social accountability. Anchored in Qur’anic values such as ‘adālah (justice), ta’ādul (balance), and ta’āruf (mutual recognition), his tafsir presents moderation as a cultivated moral virtue capable of resisting both religious extremism and ethical relativism. This study contributes to contemporary Qur’anic studies by advancing ethical hermeneutics as a robust analytical framework for religious moderation, highlighting the intellectual significance of Indonesian pesantren-based tafsir in global discussions on Islamic ethics, pluralism, and social harmony.

Abstract

The Qur’an emphasizes the importance of environmental conservation and appoints humankind as khalīfah (stewards) on earth. Although widely discussed, these values largely remain unoperationalized within applied ecological frameworks. Addressing this research gap, this study aims to explore and actualize Qur’anic values of environmental conservation through a thematic (mawd}ū’ī) exegesis approach. Using library research, the analysis identifies and interprets Qur’anic verses related to ecological ethics. The findings reveal three key dimensions of conservation values: protection, encompassing amānah (trust), human responsibility as khalīfah, and gratitude; preservation, which includes ecological justice, rah}mah (compassion), tawh}īd (divine oneness); and sustainable utilization, centered on the prohibition of isrāf (wastefulness) as a principle of balance. This study presents a novel synthesis between Qur’anic eco-ethics and Indonesia’s sustainable development discourse, a connection that has rarely been examined in previous thematic exegesis research. In the Indonesian context, the implementation of these values reflects initiatives such as eco-pesantren and eco-mosque movements, as well as environmentally conscious public policies aligned with local wisdom and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. Thus, Qur’anic ecological ethics not only enrich Islamic scholarship but also contribute to building a just, sustainable, and spiritually grounded civilization.

Abstract

Indonesian Qur’anic exegesis has undergone significant transformation alongside shifts in media, socio-political contexts, and interpretive orientations. While classical tafsir traditions were largely produced within pesantren and transmitted through printed texts, contemporary interpretations increasingly emerge in digital and mass-media spaces. This article examines Tafsir Al-Qur’an Aktual by KH. Musta’in Syafi’i, a Qur’anic commentary published in the online newspaper Harian Bangsa, focusing on how conservative and progressive exegetical tendencies are negotiated within this medium. The study aims to analyze the ideological orientations embedded in Musta’in Syafi’i’s interpretations and to explore how digital media reshapes pesantren-based Qur’anic discourse in contemporary Indonesia. Employing qualitative library research combined with Critical Discourse Analysis, the study analyzes selected tafsir texts addressing leadership, gender, public ethics, and religious authority. The findings demonstrate that Musta’in Syafi’i articulates a hybrid exegetical model that integrates classical pesantren epistemology with contextual and ethical engagement in modern socio-political debates. His tafsir exhibits progressive interpretations in areas such as social ethics, anti-corruption discourse, and gender participation in worship, while simultaneously maintaining conservative positions on religious authority, political identity, and ritual norms. This coexistence reflects the influence of the author’s ideological, educational, and socio-political pre-understandings. The study concludes that Tafsir Al-Qur’an Aktual represents a distinctive form of Indonesian Qur’anic interpretation that bridges traditional authority and contemporary public discourse, highlighting how digital media functions as a transformative space for negotiating continuity and change in Qur’anic exegesis.

Abstract

Child marriage remains a persistent social problem in Indonesia, despite significant legal reforms, notably the enactment of Law No. 16 of 2019 which raised the minimum legal age of marriage to nineteen years. However, empirical realities indicate that the practice continues to be widespread, largely reinforced by literalist religious interpretations that neglect the ethical spirit and broader objectives of Islamic jurisprudence. In response to this challenge, this study aims to critically re-examine Qur’anic verses that are frequently invoked to justify the marriage of minors through a contextual thematic interpretation (tafsīr mawd}ū’ī). This research employs a qualitative methodological framework by systematically identifying and thematically categorizing Qur’anic verses related to marriage, maturity (bulūgh), and intellectual discernment (rusyd), and parental responsibility. These verses are analyzed within their socio-historical context of revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl), followed by a contextual reinterpretation that engages contemporary legal norms and social realities in Indonesia. The findings demonstrate that although the Qur’an does not stipulate a specific chronological age for marriage, it consistently emphasizes comprehensive maturity, including physical, psychological, emotional, and financial readiness as a fundamental prerequisite. Furthermore, child marriage in the Indonesian context is shown to produce significant harm, particularly in relation to educational attainment, reproductive health, and long-term socio-economic justice. Such consequences contradict the ethical objectives of Islamic law (Maqās}id al-Sharī’ah), especially the protection of life, intellect, lineage, and human dignity. Accordingly, this study argues that a contextual thematic interpretation of the Qur’an provides a robust ethical and normative foundation to challenge literalist readings that legitimize child marriage. It further contributes to strengthening religiously grounded support for child protection policies and fostering a more humanistic and socially responsive Islamic discourse in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

The phenomena of religious intolerance and conflict continues to pose a serious challenge in multicultural societies both at the national and global levels. This situation underscores the importance of formulating a concept of religious tolerance that is not merely normative, but also contextual and rooted in local scholarly traditions. In this context, Nusantara exegesis plays a strategic role in articulating a moderate Islamic perspective that is relevant to social realities. This article aims to analyze the concept of interfaith tolerance in Tafsir Al-Munir by AGH. Daud Ismail as a representation of local Qur’anic interpretation in responding to contemporary global issues of tolerance. This study employs a qualitative approach using library research methods. The primary source of data is Tafsir Al-Munir written in Lontara script, while secondary sources include books, journal articles, and other relevant studies. Data were analyzed through content analysis of Qur’anic verses and exegetical discussions related to interreligious tolerance. The results of the study show that Daud formulates tolerance in two forms, namely passive tolerance and active tolerance. Passive tolerance is applied to matters of faith and worship that manifested in the prohibition of coercion in belief and rejection of ritual syncretism. Active tolerance, on the other hand, is applied within the socio-communal sphere and is reflected in principles of communication, cooperation, social justice, and rejection of hate speech. The study concludes that Daud Ismail’s thought makes an important contribution to the development of Nusantara Qur’anic interpretation and the broader discourse on religious moderation. Implicitly, the framework of active-passive tolerance offers a relevant reference for religious education and the promotion of social harmony grounded in local wisdom without obscuring the fundamental religious principles.
