Abstract

This research focuses on the types of cohesive devices which are used in speech. Cohesion is the relationship between one element and another in a written or spoken text. It is used to express ideas through grammar and vocabulary. This speech was held on Saturday, September 20 2014, at a special event for the HeForShe campaign. This study is considered descriptive qualitative. The research instrument is the writer because the writer is the one who is able and understands to analyse and obtain the data. The steps to collect the data are reading and understanding all the data many times. The next step is categorizing texts to be analyzed easier. The last step is describing the findings and concluding them. The findings of this study show that both cohesion types are found in the data. The types of grammatical cohesion found in the data are reference, substitution, and conjunction.  Both of lexical cohesion are found in the data, those are reiteration and collocation. It shows that the speaker uses grammatical and lexical methods.

The analysis focused on the locals' pronunciation of these words, revealing variations and humorous elements that highlight unique aspects of language use. The findings underscored the widespread presence of English and other foreign languages in the city's public spaces. They demonstrated the pronunciation challenges faced by non-native speakers, particularly Indonesian speakers, with limited exposure to English. The study provided insights into the influence of English on rural life in Indonesia and how locals navigate and express identity through language. It contributed to understanding the role of English as a global language in non-native English-speaking regions, emphasizing the diverse pronunciation patterns encountered in such contexts.

Abstract

In real-life conversation, listening and speaking skills coexist and are not mutually conflicting. However, studies about the integration of listening and speaking in the classroom are still rare. Hence, this study aims to investigate how teachers integrate listening and speaking to develop students' communicative competence and the challenges teachers face during the English learning process. The study uses a qualitative case study with four English teachers. Data is collected through observations and interviews. The findings indicate that the teachers familiarize students with listening to various English audio daily since the students stay in a dormitory. In the classroom, the teachers often use conversation audio while the students are asked to follow along with the audio script. Then, two students are asked to come forward and practice with a partner. Students are also given tasks to create short conversations with their friends based on the themes learned from the audio played by the teachers. This integration of listening and speaking activities is expected to help students develop their communicative competence. Some challenges that often arise include students feeling embarrassed to practice in front of their peers and teachers paying less attention to students seated in the back, leading to disengagement during the audio sessions. However, this study suggests that teachers provide more control, motivation, and a sense of comfort for students to address these challenges.

Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates university students' perceptions and challenges related to the use of Kahoot! in English language learning. The study focuses on understanding how students perceive Kahoot! as a learning tool and the main challenges they face while using it. A total of 90 participants, consisting of 20 students from IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram and 70 from UIN Mataram, were purposively selected based on their experience with Kahoot in English courses. Data were collected through closed and open-ended questionnaires to provide a comprehensive understanding of their experiences. The findings indicate overwhelmingly positive perceptions of Kahoot!, with participants expressing enthusiasm for its engaging format and its effectiveness in enhancing understanding of English language concepts. Qualitative responses highlighted how Kahoot! makes learning enjoyable and motivating, while the competitive aspect was seen as a valuable component of the learning experience. However, some challenges were identified, primarily related to internet connectivity and the pacing of questions. Despite these challenges, the overall sentiment suggests that the benefits of using Kahoot! in higher education contexts significantly outweigh the difficulties encountered. This study contributes to the growing body of research on gamification in language learning, emphasizing the potential of interactive tools like Kahoot! to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes in English language education.
