Abstract

This study investigates the use of emotional speech acts in Colleen Hoover's It Ends with Us, focusing on how characters navigate relational conflicts using expressive and commissive speech acts. Using a pragmatic framework based on Searle's speech act theory and Baxter and Montgomery's Relational Dialectics Theory, the research examines chapters 23-35 of the novel, which are rich in emotional and relational dialogue. A qualitative method of dialogue transcription and coding reveals 144 speech acts, with expressive acts accounting for 76% and reflecting emotions such as guilt, love, and regret. Commissive acts, which account for 24%, emphasize promises and commitments that influence relational dynamics. The findings emphasize the significance of language in expressing emotions and resolving interpersonal conflicts. Expressive acts frequently reveal characters' vulnerabilities, whereas commissive acts emphasize their intentions to mend relationships or make future commitments. This interaction demonstrates the complexities of emotional communication, particularly in the context of trauma and recovery. This study adds to pragmatic research by demonstrating how emotional speech acts shape interpersonal dynamics in literary texts, revealing how language mirrors real-life emotional communication. By focusing on It Ends with Us, this study bridges the gap between literary analysis and linguistic pragmatics, providing a more nuanced understanding of how emotional and relational tensions are managed through language. The findings emphasize language's transformative power in navigating love, betrayal, and resilience, which is consistent with broader discussions about emotional communication in various contexts.

Abstract

Using digital tools such as Google Forms and Microsoft Forms has transformed the landscape of English language assessment, offering features like instant feedback, multimedia integration, and automated grading. However, despite their widespread adoption, limited research has systematically compared their effectiveness across critical dimensions, including usability, engagement, and feedback quality, as well as their suitability for assessing specific language skills—reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This study aimed to fill this gap by evaluating the strengths and limitations of these platforms through a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data were collected from surveys involving 100 students and 15 educators, while qualitative insights were derived from semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. Statistical analyses were used to assess platform-specific performance, including paired t-tests and ANOVA. The results revealed significant differences in skill-specific effectiveness: Google Forms was better suited for reading assessments (p = 0.014) due to its simplicity and ease of use, while Microsoft Forms excelled in writing (p = 0.001) and speaking (p = 0.047) tasks, owing to its advanced features like branching logic and multimedia capabilities. Both platforms were equally effective for listening assessments, reflecting their shared strengths in multimedia support. Regarding usability, Google Forms was favoured for its mobile-friendly design, whereas Microsoft Forms offered superior customization but presented a steeper learning curve. Engagement levels were comparable, with multimedia integration and instant feedback highlighted as key motivators. Feedback quality was effective on both platforms but required further refinement for open-ended tasks. This study concluded that educators should align platform selection with the specific assessment objectives, using Google Forms for receptive skills like reading and listening and Microsoft Forms for productive tasks like writing and speaking. These findings provide practical recommendations for leveraging digital tools to enhance language assessment practices.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of mobile applications in improving English competence among Indonesian senior high school students studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The study used an experimental approach and involved two groups of students from senior high schools in Indonesia. The experimental group employed certain mobile applications as supplementary tools in their English learning process, whereas the control group received regular classroom instruction without the usage of mobile applications. Data were collected over a three-month period using pre- and post-tests that assessed various areas of English ability, such as vocabulary, grammar, listening, and speaking skills. The results show that students in the experimental group improved their English proficiency significantly more than those in the control group. The usage of mobile applications increased students' interest and motivation while also providing flexible and interactive learning options that older techniques lacked. Qualitative data acquired from student comments and instructor observations support the favorable influence of mobile applications on students' learning outcomes. The study shows that using mobile applications into EFL training can be an extremely effective technique for increasing English proficiency among Indonesian senior high school students. The results suggest that educational stakeholders should consider adding mobile technology into language courses to supplement and improve existing teaching techniques. Future research should concentrate on long-term impacts and investigate the potential of various types of mobile applications in diverse EFL settings.

Abstract

In the context of Indonesian political communication, affecting public opinion and attracting supports can be achieved by employing religious rhetoric. Religious references are commonly used by politicians to attract various audiences. However, the specific linguistic strategies used to achieve this effect remain underexplored, particularly the use of deictic expressions which focus on words and phrases that rely on contextual information for interpretation. This study addresses this gap by studying how Prabowo Subianto, the president of Indonesia and a significant Indonesian political figure, uses deixis in his religious-themed speeches to foster solidarity, assert leadership, and construct ideological narratives. The investigation employs pragmatic theory, particularly Levinson (1983) typology of deixis, which includes person, spatial (place), temporal (time), social, and discourse deixis. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to analyze five of Prabowo’s speeches in order to identify the deictic expressions and their communicative functions. The findings of this study reveal a consistent use of inclusive person deixis (e.g., “kita”), spatial deixis that connects the audience in shared spaces, and temporal deixis that expresses urgency and collective momentum. Social deixis reflects politeness norms and cultural hierarchy in Indonesia, while discourse deixis ensures cohesion and rhetorical clarity. According to these findings, deixis in political speech can be considered instrumental, not merely referential, in maintaining relationships, expressing shared identity, and reinforcing ideological commitments. The implications suggest that deictic analysis offers an influential perspective for understanding the interaction of language, religion, and politics in Indonesian public discourse.

Abstract

This study examines the use of figurative language in the novel Pergi by Tere Liye published by Republika Penerbit on April in 2018, focusing on personification, metaphor, simile, and hyperbole. In this study the author refers to the theory of Gorys Keraf (2010). The research aims to identify the types of figurative language used, analyse their meanings, and reveal the implicit messages conveyed by the author. The method used is qualitative descriptive analysis, with data collection techniques involving in-depth reading and classification of sentences containing specific figurative language elements. The findings indicate that Tere Liye predominantly uses personification and metaphor to depict the emotions and situations faced by the main character, while similes and hyperboles are utilized to enhance the dramatic effect of the narrative. These stylistic devices not only enrich the novel's aesthetics but also play a crucial role in conveying moral messages and life values to the readers.

Abstract

This study examines cultural hybridity in the film Joy Ride (2023), which blends Western and Asian cultural elements. Understanding cultural hybridity is crucial in the era of globalisation to foster mutual respect and avoid subjective negative perceptions of foreign cultures. This research aims to analyse the forms, processes, and purposes of cultural hybridity depicted in the film. A qualitative descriptive method was employed with a constructive paradigm, applying Ferdinand de Saussure's structural semiotics. The findings were further analysed using Homi K. Bhabha's concept of cultural hybridity, which includes hybridity, mimicry, and ambivalence. The study identified 11 instances of hybrid culture reflected in the characters' daily lives. Mimicry is observed in four key aspects, such as Lolo’s gesture of raising her middle finger in a photo, symbolising an adaptation of Western norms. Additionally, the characters adopt K-pop-inspired fashion to gain social acceptance. Audrey’s professional success as a lawyer and Lolo’s reputation as "most likely to get arrested" further highlight hybrid cultural identities. Ambivalence emerges in tensions between participation and discrimination, Western attitudes and traditional Chinese values, and stereotypical intercultural interactions. These findings illustrate how cultural hybridity manifests in Joy Ride (2023), highlighting the complexities of identity negotiation in a multicultural world.
