Abstract

The  purpose  of  the study. In order to conduct a thorough examination of the biomechanical principles underlying lower limb functionality during softball batting, this study aims to specifically elucidate the contributions of ground reaction forces, patterns of muscle activation, and the temporal sequencing of these factors in influencing overall batting performance. Materials and methods. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, searching electronic databases for peer-reviewed research from January 2000 to December 2024. The study initially identified 156 potentially relevant articles, with 24 studies ultimately meeting the stringent inclusion criteria. Researchers utilized advanced measurement techniques including surface electromyography, motion capture systems, and force plate analysis to examine lower limb biomechanics. Results. Elite softball players demonstrated significantly more precise lower limb mechanics compared to intermediate players. Key findings include peak rear leg ground reaction forces ranging from 1.6 to 1.8 times body weight, compared to 1.2 to 1.4 times for intermediate players. Muscle activation showed a sequential pattern progressing from gluteal muscles through quadriceps to gastrocnemius, with a strong correlation to bat speed (r=0.72, p<0.01). Temporal sequencing was crucial, with elite players exhibiting a coefficient of variation of 8.3% compared to 15.7% for intermediate players. Conclusions. The study reveals that successful softball batting depends not on raw strength, but on the sophisticated coordination of lower limb biomechanics. Precise timing, muscle recruitment patterns, and efficient energy transfer through the kinetic chain are critical for optimal batting performance. The research provides evidence-based recommendations for targeted training interventions that focus on movement coordination and biomechanical efficiency.

Abstract

The  purpose  of  the study. To evaluate the effectiveness of an integrated swimming instruction program combining cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) principles with adaptive aquatic techniques for children with water-related anxiety disorders, comparing outcomes with traditional swimming instruction methods. Materials and methods. A randomized controlled trial involving 120 children aged 6-12 years with diagnosed anxiety disorders featuring water-related fears di kota Medan, Indonesia, Indonesia. Participants were assigned to either an intervention group (n=60) receiving specialized anxiety-focused instruction or a control group (n=60) receiving standard swimming lessons. The 12-week program included twice-weekly 45-minute sessions. Outcomes were measured using the Water Anxiety Scale for Children (WASC-R), Swimming Competency Assessment Tool (SCAT), Behavioral Observation Scale (BOS), and parent-reported anxiety measures (SCARED questionnaire). Results. The intervention group showed significantly greater improvements across all measures: anxiety reduction (68% vs 23% in controls), swimming competency (82% vs 45%), and avoidance behaviors (85% vs 35% reduction). Program completion rates were higher in the intervention group (95% vs 82%). At 3-month follow-up, the intervention group maintained superior outcomes in anxiety reduction (92% maintenance), swimming skills (88%), and water confidence (90%) compared to controls (76%, 70%, and 65% respectively). Conclusions. The integrated anxiety-focused swimming instruction approach significantly outperforms traditional methods for children with water-related anxiety disorders, producing superior outcomes in both psychological and physical domains while maintaining higher program adherence rates. This approach should be considered the standard of care for anxiety-affected populations in aquatic education.

Abstract

The  purpose  of  the study. This study investigated the efficacy of a novel freestyle swimming training model that systematically integrates traditional Indonesian water games on 50-meter freestyle swimming performance, stroke mechanics, and training enjoyment among youth competitive swimmers. Materials and methods. Twenty-four athletes (14 males, 10 females; age 12-16 years; mean experience 3.4 ± 1.1 years) from the Bangkinang City Swimming Association, Riau, Indonesia participated in this study. A rigorous one-group pretest-posttest experimental design was implemented over an eight-week intervention period (March-May 2023). The training program strategically incorporated five traditional Indonesian water games (Benteng Air, Apung Berlomba, Berenang Bebek, Selam Harta Karun, and Kejar Tangkap Air), each modified to emphasize specific freestyle swimming elements. Comprehensive assessments included 50-meter freestyle time trials, stroke rate, distance per stroke, technical execution ratings, and training enjoyment measures. Results. Statistical analysis demonstrated highly significant improvements in all performance parameters following the intervention. The mean 50-meter freestyle time decreased from 32.46 ± 3.21 seconds pre-intervention to 30.18 ± 2.87 seconds post-intervention (p < 0.001, d = 1.86), representing a 7.02% improvement. Stroke mechanics showed concurrent enhancement, with stroke rate improving by 8.17% (p < 0.001) and distance per stroke increasing by 5.34% (p = 0.003). Technical execution scores improved by 16.57% (p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis identified three key predictors explaining 78.6% of performance improvement variance: enhanced stroke efficiency (β = 0.47, p < 0.001), training enjoyment (β = 0.31, p = 0.008), and initial technical proficiency (β = -0.25, p = 0.022). Importantly, physiological monitoring confirmed that traditional game activities elicited training stimuli comparable to conventional interval training (mean HR: 162 ± 14 bpm vs. 168 ± 12 bpm, p = 0.075). Conclusions. The integration of culturally relevant traditional games into freestyle swimming training provides a scientifically validated and particularly effective methodology for enhancing swimming performance among youth athletes. This innovative approach simultaneously improves stroke mechanics, physiological conditioning, and technical proficiency while significantly increasing training enjoyment and engagement. The concurrent improvement in typically opposing parameters (stroke rate and distance per stroke) suggests that traditional movement patterns may naturally facilitate the development of efficient propulsive mechanisms. These findings have significant implications for swimming pedagogy, particularly in culturally diverse contexts, offering coaches an evidence-based alternative to conventional training approaches that may enhance both performance outcomes and program adherence.

Abstract

Purpose of The Study. To investigate the effects of an 8-week plyometric depth jump training program on badminton smash accuracy in amateur athletes and examine the relationship between lower body power development and overhead striking precision. Material and methods. Twenty-four amateur badminton athletes (14 males, 10 females; age: 19-25 years) were randomly assigned to experimental (n=12) and control (n=12) groups. The experimental group performed progressive plyometric depth jump training three times per week in addition to regular badminton practice, while the control group maintained only regular practice. Platform heights progressed from 40-55 cm over 8 weeks. Smash accuracy, vertical jump performance, ground contact time, and movement efficiency were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Results. The experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in smash accuracy (29.6%, p < 0.001, d = 2.21), vertical jump height (13.2%, p < 0.001, d = 1.78), and ground contact time (15.7% reduction, p < 0.001). Strong correlations were observed between vertical jump improvements and accuracy enhancements (r = 0.76, p < 0.001). The control group showed minimal changes (4.4% improvement in accuracy, p = 0.089). No significant gender differences were found in adaptation rates (p = 0.085). Conclusions. An 8-week plyometric depth jump training program significantly improves badminton smash accuracy in amateur athletes, suggesting that enhanced lower body power development directly contributes to improved striking precision. The findings support integrating structured plyometric training into regular badminton practice for technical skill enhancement.

Abstract

The  purpose  of  the study. The precision of passing techniques is crucial for young football players, yet empirical comparisons of training methodologies during ages 12 to 15 are lacking. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the effectiveness of the Pass Go methodology, a game-based learning approach, against traditional drill training in enhancing passing accuracy, decision-making speed, and technical execution among youth football players. Materials and methods. Sixty youth football players aged 12-15 were randomly assigned to a 12-week intervention with three groups: Pass Go (game-based training), drill-based training, and a control group. Passing accuracy (short-range and medium-range), decision-making, and technical execution were assessed at baseline, mid-intervention, and post-intervention. Results. During a 12-week intervention, the Pass Go methodology group significantly outperformed the drill-based training group in short-range passing accuracy, improving by 24.3% compared to 19.1% (d=1.82, p<0.001), medium-range passing accuracy with increases of 18.7% versus 15.4% (d=1.56, p<0.001), and decision-making speed, achieving a 64.3% improvement against 33.3% (p<0.001). Age-specific analysis revealed that younger participants (12 to 13 years) exhibited greater technical improvements, while older players (14 to 15 years) showed enhanced decision-making abilities. Both experimental groups significantly outperformed the control group across all parameters measured, confirming their superior efficacy. Conclusions. The Pass Go methodology, emphasizing game-based learning, significantly outperformed traditional training in developing comprehensive passing skills among youth football players. These findings advocate for the enhanced incorporation of game-based learning strategies in youth football programs and stress the need for age-specific adaptations in training design to maximize player development.

Abstract

The  purpose  of  the study. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between conditional capacities (agility, speed, aerobic capacity, and explosive strength) and somatic maturation—expressed as years from PHV—in a cohort of youth male soccer players. Materials and methods. A quantitative, correlational, and cross-sectional design was employed. Seventeen male soccer players aged 14–15 years participated. Somatic maturation was assessed via anthropometric estimation of PHV. Physical performance was evaluated using the Andersen Test (aerobic capacity), 20 m sprint (linear speed), Illinois Agility Test, and horizontal jump (explosive strength). Tests were administered under standardized conditions across three sessions. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and ANOVA using SPSS software. Results. Descriptive findings indicated substantial variability in maturation (mean PHV = –0.89 ± 1.21 years), despite a homogenous chronological age. Correlation analyses revealed no statistically significant associations between PHV and the measured performance variables (p > .05). The strongest—but still non-significant—trend appeared between PHV and agility (Illinois test; r = –0.319), suggesting that more mature players may demonstrate slightly better change-of-direction ability. Overall, maturation did not directly predict aerobic performance, explosiveness, or speed in this sample. Conclusions. Somatic maturation, expressed through PHV, did not significantly relate to physical performance indicators among the adolescent soccer players studied. The considerable variability in maturation reinforces the need for coaches to consider biological age rather than relying solely on chronological age when interpreting performance, prescribing training loads, and making talent selection decisions. These findings highlight the importance of individualized assessment and developmentally informed training in youth soccer contexts.

Abstract

The  purpose  of  the study:  The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between xG and goals scored in soccer matches. Materials and methods: This study was quantitative, correlational, and longitudinal. 333 league matches were analyzed. The dataset was obtained from Sofascore, a website that offers statistics and results from various sporting events. The hypothesis was put forward that there is a positive correlation between xG and goals scored. The sample consisted of 333 official matches from international competitions, including the 2013/24 Champions League, the 2024 Copa Libertadores, Euro 2024, and the 2024 Copa América. These tournaments were selected due to their significant international relevance. Results: The results of this research confirm the validity of using xG as an indicator for analyzing a team's offensive performance, although its predictive capacity tends to vary depending on the context or competition. In clubs, players have more continuity because they train together, which makes it easier to establish a playing pattern, so this may be a reason for higher xG compared to national team tournaments. Conclusions: The results obtained in this study confirm the relationship between xG and goals scored in football matches, thus establishing it as a valid indicator for measuring offensive performance in football. It was found that in club tournaments, the amount of association, in the Copa Libertadores (r = 0.537) having the best association between the variables, in the Champions League the association was lower (r = 0.403). Meanwhile, in national team tournaments, the values for the Copa América and Euro were (r = 0.475) and (r = 0.479), respectively, where some similarity can be observed in the association of variables, which is attributed to the poor group cohesion and poor tactical fit of the national teams compared to the clubs.

Abstract

The  purpose  of  the study. This review synthesizes evidence on long-term rugby player development, emphasizing age-appropriate training, position-specific conditioning, injury prevention, and psychosocial support across developmental stages. Materials and methods. A structured literature review approach was used. Sources were selected to represent (i) long-term athlete development (LTAD) and youth physical development, (ii) rugby-specific strength and conditioning, (iii) injury epidemiology and injury-prevention programmes, and (iv) psychosocial/mental skills needs in collision sports. The manuscript corpus reported 30 included sources (journal articles, books, and web-based governing-body resources). Results. Evidence consistently supports: (1) stage-appropriate progression (fundamental skills → training-to-train → training-to-compete/performance), (2) integrated strength, neuromuscular, and contact-technique development for performance and safety, (3) injury risk being strongly concentrated in contact events (notably tackles), with structured prevention programmes (e.g., Activate) demonstrating meaningful reductions in youth rugby injury outcomes, and (4) psychosocial skills (goal-setting, resilience, stress management) as essential to sustain participation and optimize transitions. Conclusions. Long-term rugby development is best supported through multidisciplinary, stage-sensitive programming that combines physical preparation, technical-tactical learning, injury-risk management, and structured psychosocial support, while explicitly addressing implementation barriers (coach capacity, adherence, and resource inequities).
