Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the Case Method and Team-Based Project learning approaches within the context of the Geography Education Department's cultural and political geography courses at Universitas Negeri Medan. These methods, relevant to the Merdeka Belajar - Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program, aim to enhance student skills through active, applied learning. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research gathered data via questionnaires distributed through Google Forms to a sample of 67 students out of a total population of 454 from the 2019-2022 academic cohorts. Findings indicate that the duration required for the Case Method varies with the complexity of the cases, ranging from 15-30 minutes for simpler issues to over 60 minutes for more intricate problems. The Team-Based Project approach necessitates 7 to 8 meetings, including initial planning and subsequent implementation phases, monitored by lecturers through direct communication or digital platforms like LMS forums or Zoom channels. However, the study reveals inefficiencies in applying these learning methods within the department, attributed to the substantial workload imposed by the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI) and a lack of student engagement in assignments. It suggests a comprehensive revision of IQF assignments towards more discussion-oriented and field-practical approaches to address these challenges.

Abstract

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate university students' library engagement, emphasizing preferences, motivations, and reading habits, with an additional focus on gender dynamics. A total of 373 participants were involved in the research, and data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the participants' reading habits in different library sections, types of books read, and reasons for their preference for reading in the library. The Kruskal-Wallis test was employed to examine potential gender differences in these variables. The findings revealed variations in the frequency of students' reading activities across different library sections, with the main reading room being the most preferred section. The study also identified specific book types, such as personal notebooks and library textbooks, that were frequently read by students. Reasons for students' preference for reading in the library included the motivating environment, availability of book options, assistance from librarians, and fewer distractions compared to other places. The results of the Kruskal-Wallis test indicated significant gender differences in the ranks for certain library sections, book types, and reasons for reading in the library. These findings provide valuable insights into students' reading habits and preferences, highlighting the importance of creating diverse reading spaces, expanding book collections, promoting a supportive library environment, and enhancing librarian support. The implications of the study underscore the need for gender-inclusive services, thoughtful space design, and comprehensive collection development to meet the evolving needs of students and foster a reading culture in libraries.

Abstract

This study used the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun Library as a case study to investigate strategies for managing born-digital records in the university library. The study aims to ascertain the types of born-digital records available in FUPRE library, the strategies used for managing born-digital records, challenges of managing born-digital records. To achieve these objectives, the descriptive survey research was adopted. This research method was considered appropriate by the researchers because it allows for systematic collection and analysis of data to describe characteristics, behaviors, or opinions within a specific population. Hence it will help to provide insights into the current strategies employed by FUPRE library for managing born-digital records. The questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection and the data collected for the study were analyzed using simple percentages, frequency counts, and bar charts. The study found that: born-digital records such as test-based documents (for example Word documents, and Google documents), etc., library presentations e.g., PowerPoint, spreadsheets e.g., Excel, digital documents e.g., PDFs, and electronic memos are the born-digital records are available in FUPRE library; the only policy in place regarding the management of born-digital records is the policy on storage of born-digital records. The study also found that the library’s strategies for preserving born-digital records are refreshing, migration, and replication and that their strategy for disposing of born-digital records is deletion while the challenges of managing born-digital records are technological obsolescence, lack/poor digital storage facilities, copyright, and intellectual property rights issues among others. These findings contribute to the understanding of current practices and challenges in managing born-digital records within university libraries, specifically at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE) library. The study recommends that the library management should formulate policies that will cater to the creation/generation, preservation, transfer/exchange as well as the disposition of born-digital records giving them direction when it comes to managing born-digital records in the library among others.

Abstract

This study explores the influence of parental involvement on the character development of elementary school-aged children, focusing on how different forms of parental engagement shape positive character traits. Utilizing a literature review methodology, this research synthesizes and analyzes empirical studies to provide a comprehensive understanding of the connection between parental involvement and children's character formation at this crucial developmental stage. Findings indicate that parental involvement plays a pivotal role in shaping children's character. Positive engagement from parents correlates with enhanced character development, while insufficient or negative involvement tends to impede the growth of positive character traits. The study underscores that the development of children's character is a collaborative endeavor involving parents, schools, and the wider community, highlighting the importance of a united approach in nurturing well-rounded individuals.
