Abstract

In a free trade environment, the requirements to remain competitive become more demanding. The requirements make innovation more necessary to be done, and strongly associated with the ability to take advantage on scientific achievement. Therefore, innovation process conducted becomes an important determinant for its final outcome. Nevertheless, how innovation occurs in SMEs is still rather unknown exactly. This paper attempts to analyze innovation process in SMEs especially in low-technology sectors, particularly in food and beverage sector, in terms of sources of innovation which is related with sources of information and knowledge. This study use case study approach within two food and beverage SMEs. The innovation process is seen through the decision making process approach. This study reveal several important conclusions. In food and beverage sector, it appears that the process of innovation in the SMEs do not only involve the internal but also external parties. The process of innovation was still very simple. Generally, the approach in decision making and understanding of innovation is more static, non-rational, informal and hierarchical. Nevertheless, to complement the result, further studies still need to be conducted to obtain stronger justification of conclusions and policy recommendation. Keywords: innovation process, decision making, source of innovation, food and beverage sector, SME

Abstract

The mechanism of selecting and evaluating exploration prospects for oil and gas exploration drilling projects is usually done individually with considerations on the technical and economical aspects. The technical aspect of the prospect is focused on to how far a chance of oil and gas exists, and this aspect is also referred to as risk aspect of the prospect. On the other side, economic evaluation is done based on predicted resource recovery, an evaluation of the level of prospect using general investment indicators. Technical aspects used to be assessed as a standard procedure in the exploration projects, but economic aspects will still need to be intensively explored. In the condition where the availability of drilling sites are getting scarcer as well as the very limited budget, this research proposes the tools of analyses for optimizing the selection and planning of exploration projects, namely the Discounted Cash Flow and the Decision Tree of Timing Option. Analyses have been conducted in this research, by inputting a three-year REPA(Region Risk Factors) Index. The result from those analyses is an index of investment called the RI3 index. Comparing it with the application of Zero-One Programming method in portfolio analyses, it was shown that the ranks of investment from both analyses are different. Keywords: investment portfolio, risk factors, risk assessment, discounted cash flow, decision tree of timing option

Abstract

This paper is aimed at outlining a literature review on integrated resource management (IRM). The literature review highlight IRM from three views, namely conceptual perspective, methodological perspective, and implementation perspective. Our critical discussion of IRM leads us to a conclusion that considering the various applications of IRM, we propose that it is time to change the label of IRM into IREM (Integrated resource and environmental management). We also propose that further work on IREM could be directed on developing an alternative analytical framework based on the cycle of management processes as well as developing a more operational framework to implement IREM.

Abstract

Abstract

The objective of this study is to empirically explore the influence of marketing channels and price to rice marketing efficiency in Aceh Province, Indonesia. Six hundreds farmers' households from six districts of rice production base in Aceh were selected for the samples and analysed using the structural equation modelling (SEM). This study has been successfully documented how inefficient was the marketing of rice in Aceh because the farmers still tended to choose higher level of marketing channel with lower marketing performance. The price of rice was unstable, especially during the harvest and famine seasons, despite the government having set up a price policy. This study also found that marketing channels had positive and significant relationship with the rice marketing efficiency. Keywords: Efficiency, Marketing, Prices, Rice Marketing Channels, Price Effect

Abstract

Core competence (CC) is important for firm in determining its competitive advantage. CC is generated through learning by utilizing internal and external knowledge sources. One of the important sources of external knowledge for companies is expatriates. However, in Indonesia expatriates have not been optimally utilized, especially in terms of knowledge transfer (KT) purpose and only few literatures that explores this. This paper discusses the role of expatriates in strengthening CC in Indonesian local companies. This qualitative research with multiple case studies through interviews and observations in Indonesian local company found that expatriates tend to play a role in strengthening existing CC. Knowledge from expatriates filled the gap of knowledge of the individual / team as a co-worker of the expatriate through knowledge acquisition. Supported by existing expertise and knowledge, local employee could improve their capabilities and capacities, and the accumulation could shape individual / team competencies. Supported by existing CC, a stronger one could be created. KT from expatriates also plays a role in shaping the new corporate culture. Production capability (PC) was more supported by explicit knowledge from expatriates, while innovation capability (IC) was formed through tacit knowledge acquisition from expatriates. These capabilities formed individual and team competencies that strengthen the existing CC.Keywords: Expatriate, core competence, learning, technological capability, human resource management, company’s culture
