Abstract

Overweight and obesity rates are an epidemic in the United States (U.S.) with these rates increasing dramatically in recent decades (Sogari et al., 2018). According to McEligot et al. (2020) college students classified as overweight and/or obese in the U.S. increased from 29% to 32.5% from 2000 to 2009. College is a critical time for young adults in terms of dietary choices and the relationship between students and weight gain. The purpose of this DNP project was to assess if undergraduate healthcare students in the Midwest showed poor nutritional dietary habits and showed a willingness to change their poor habits for a healthier lifestyle. The data would be used to assist the college healthcare clinic in providing proper nutritional awareness and guidance for the students. Undergraduate nursing students at a Midwest university completed an assessment tool, in the form of a 16-question Rapid Eating and Activity Assessment for Patients, Abbreviated Version (REAPS) survey that assessed their knowledge regarding nutrition and their food choices. Each question had a numeric scale (1-3) scoring system with defined results. The descriptive statistics tool in SPSS was used for analysis of the survey results. This study showed that 62.43% of the responses from undergraduate nursing students that were surveyed had poor dietary habits. 96.29% of the students that were surveyed did have a willingness to change in order to have a healthier lifestyle. Undergraduate healthcare students would benefit from increased nutritional awareness while on and off campus. The college health clinic can help promote a healthy lifestyle and decrease obesity related illnesses for students. There are numerous opportunities for colleges to promote nutritional awareness among their student body.

Abstract

Primiparous mother is confronted with many physical and psychosocial changes during the postpartum period which consequently affect her maternal functioning. To deal with these changes positively, the maternal functioning of postpartum mothers should be enhanced by the provision of maternal and newborn care intervention (MNCI). A quasi-experimental research pretest post-test comparison group design was used to study the effect of MNCI on the maternal functioning of primiparous mothers. This study was conducted in Mandalay Central Women’s Hospital, Myanmar. A total of 72 primiparous mothers (control group=36, intervention group=36) were recruited by consecutive sampling. The MNCI was given to the intervention group in the form of direct nursing care, individual and group teaching and demonstration using audio-visual materials and an educational booklet, discussion in “Peer Viber Support Group” and follow-up telephone calls. Baseline assessment was done at antenatal 32nd to 36th weeks to assess postpartum self-care knowledge, maternal newborn care knowledge, and social support. At six weeks postpartum, self-efficacy and maternal functioning of participants were assessed in addition to baseline assessment. Descriptive statistics, paired t-test, independent t-test, and Chi-square test were used to analyze the data. The results showed that maternal functioning was significantly improved in the intervention group than the control group at postpartum six weeks (p < 0.05). The improvement was also found in postpartum self-care knowledge, maternal newborn care knowledge, social support, and postpartum self-efficacy of primiparous mothers at postpartum six weeks (p < 0.001). This study highlighted that the MNCI was effective in enhancing the maternal functioning of the primiparous mothers. Further studies are recommended to determine the effectiveness of the MNCI upon health outcomes of postpartum mothers and babies in hospitals and community settings.

Abstract

In adolescence, the teenage girl begins to pay attention to physical appearance and wants to be close to their ideal concept of beauty, such as a slim body. The inability to appear according to the ideal concept of beauty in teenage girls with obesity causes self-image disorders. This study aims to determine the correlation between obesity and adolescent girls' self-image in Denpasar city. This study employed a correlation analysis with a cross-sectional approach. The sample in this study was 369 respondents. The sampling technique used was cluster sampling and simple random sampling. The data collection tool used was a self-image and percentile IMT questionnaire. Data analysis using chi-square test. Findings indicated that most teenage girls were not obese (72.1%), and most teenage girls had a positive self-image (96.2%). The statistical test shows p<0,001, which means a significant correlation exists between obesity and teenage girls' self-image. A study revealed a significant link between obesity and self-image among adolescent girls, with obese girls experiencing negative self-perception. The study suggests that encouraging these young women to engage in activities they excel in, like exercise and singing, could help them discover their strengths and mitigate the psychosocial effects associated with body image. Additional intervention measures are necessary to explore and reduce the broader psychosocial impact beyond body perception.

Abstract

This study, conducted on diagnosed aneurysm patients, in order to test the effects of progressive muscle relaxation on blood pressure and anxiety levels in the preoperative period, was carried out in a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test application. The data of this study were collected between January 2022-September 2022 at the neurosurgery clinic on 38 patients (twenty women and eighteen men) who’ve been diagnosed with cerebral aneurysm, awaiting a surgical operation, and have other criteria to be taken into the study. Pre- and post-exercise vital signs and anxiety levels of patients receiving progressive muscle relaxation exercises for twenty minutes in the preoperative period were measured with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Frequency analysis for descriptive statistics, and t-test analysis for blood pressure, pulse, respiration, BAI, and VAS scores in a single group were utilized. Progressive muscle relaxation exercises in the preoperative period for neurosurgery patients diagnosed with aneurysm have statistically significant effects in reducing the patients’ anxiety and blood pressure (p<0.001). It is recommended that progressive muscle relaxation exercises be used in the clinic during the preoperative period. A clinically important finding is the positive effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercises on patients' vital signs and anxiety.

Abstract

Realizing the advantages of lifestyle modification after myocardial infarction (MI) requires active lifestyle change. Sometimes patients find it difficult to follow the recommendations for lifestyle changes, which are crucial for all MI patients to implement in order to lower the risk of secondary attack. This study aimed to explore the real-world experiences of post-MI patients who had changed their lifestyles at a university hospital. This qualitative study was conducted among 20 purposively selected post-MI patients. The patients who had confirmed medical diagnosis as old MI, had been admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital for more than a week, and had been willing to participate in this study were considered as the study subjects. Data was collected through an open ended semi-structured questionnaire by face-to-face interview. Using qualitative content analysis, the interview transcripts were examined at the same time as the data was being gathered. Out of 20 study subjects, 55% were male and 60% were Muslim. Participants age was ranging from 36-70 years. Two themes, namely adjustment with modified life and maladjustment with normal life emerged as the lived experiences of lifestyle modification of patients with old Myocardial Infarction. It is concluded that patients with post-MI can have both good and bad experiences during the period of lifestyle modification.

Abstract

Background:The most important midwifery care in the delivery process is to apply the principle of "Dear Mother" namely respecting each other's culture, beliefs and desires of the mother and involving the husband and family. Non-pharmacological pain management can be carried out by most health care providers (doctors, nurses and midwives) who may also involve the mother's family, including back massage. Objective: Knowing the effect of back massage on labor pain during the first active phase in labor mothers Method: This research is a type of descriptive research with a quasy experimental research design with pretest posttest one group with the sample of this study namely mothers in the active phase of the first stage of labor who experience labor pain as many as 30 respondents. This sample was taken using a purposive sampling method with a measuring instrument, namely a numerical pain scale, an observation sheet with an ANOVA analysis test. Results: The results of this study show that there are differences in labor pain after back massage. There is a coercive effect between back massage and labor pain with a P value = 0.00 (<0.05), husband's assistance with labor pain with a P value = 0.03 while there is no significant effect between parity and labor pain with a P value = 0.07. Conclusion: There is an effect of back massage on labor pain in the first active phase of the birthing mother. Suggestion: it is hoped that more/frequent back massage techniques are performed to reduce labor pain during the first active phase according to SOP.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease which is currently a major challenge for global and national community healing, and is one of the most common causes of death in the world. According to the NHANES, blood pressure that is not normalized is defined as systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg, where the patient is unconscious, conscious but not treated or treated with antihypertensive drugs. Factors that can cause uncontrolled blood pressure are uncontrollable and controllable factors, namely salt consumption, coffee consumption, and obesity. Analyzing the factors associated with blood pressure in patients with uncontrolled hypertension at Health Center I West Denpasar. This study used a cross-sectional analytic survey approach, involving 57 people using the accidental sampling method. Statistical analysis using Chi-square. The results of the chi square analysis showed that the salt consumption factor was p=0.000, the coffee consumption factor was p=0.041, and the obesity factor was p=0.022. The factor that is most closely related to the increase in blood pressure is coffee consumption with an OR value of 0.224 times. Health workers need to provide information about DASH (Dietary Approaches To Stop Hypertension) in hypertensive patients to help reduce increased blood pressure in addition to taking antihypertensive drugs regularly.

Abstract

Low birth weight can be one of the factors that can affect the social-emotional development of toddlers. Previous research has indicated that LBW toddlers are more likely to have issues with their social-emotional development. Since this developmental domain influences cognitive function, motor function, and linguistic abilities, it may have an effect on children's performance in the future. This study aims to determine whether the history of low birth weight is related to the social-emotional development of toddlers in the UPT Puskesmas Kalisat Working Area, Jember. Cross-sectional study with the quantitative analysis used in this study. The number of samples is 125 respondents using a multistage cluster random sampling technique. Data was collected using the MCH (Maternal and Child Health) book to find out the history of birth weight and the PPSC (Pediatric Preschool Symptom Checklist) questionnaire. The results showed that 66 children (52.8%) did not have a history of LBW. The social-emotional development of toddlers is mostly not at risk of experiencing social-emotional development disorders, with a total of 69 toddlers (57.2%). Chi-square test analysis obtained a p-value of 0.147 > 0.05, which means that there is no significant relationship between LBW history and social-emotional development in toddlers. However, it is important to underline that social-emotional development is influenced by various factors. This study shows that factors of nutritional status, age of mother/caregiver, and educational status of mother/caregiver statistically affect social-emotional development (p<0.05).

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the diagnosis levels and experiences of obstetric violence, which negatively affects women, of midwife candidates. The sample of the descriptive study consisted of 203 students studying in the Midwifery department of a public university who volunteered to participate in the research (Participation rate: 56%). Data were collected with the "Personal Information Form", "Obstetric Violence Diagnosis Form". Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate the data. The mean age of the students who contributed to the research was determined as 21.20±2.18. While it was determined that 59.1% of the students participating in the study had knowledge about obstetric violence, it was determined that the most common source of information was the internet (27.6%) and the immediate environment (13.8%), respectively. It was determined that 33.5% of the students witnessed obstetric violence. In addition, 23.2% of the students stated that obstetric violence is common in health institutions. In the light of the study findings, it was determined that the knowledge level of midwifery students about diagnosing obstetric violence should be improved. Therefore, raising awareness through improved educational models, standardizing care through the implementation of clinical practice guidelines, establishing protocols for respectful care, establishing the preventive legal basis, and promoting the humanization of childbirth will be key to eradicating obstetric violence.

Abstract

Parents have a very important role in fulfilling the nutritional status of children. Lack of nutritional knowledge, especially in agricultural areas, influences food processing behavior so that nutritional problems in children tend to increase. This literature review aims to describe mother's knowledge, family support and risk factors for infectious diseases with nutritional status and respiratory problems in children in agricultural areas. Methods: This research uses the literature review study method with 4 databases, namely Google Scholar, PubMed, Scient Direct, and Springer with a range of 2019-2023. Result: The role of parents is related to nutritional status and health conditions in children. Parental education, inadequate environmental conditions, and potential risk factors can also affect the nutritional status and respiratory problems in children under five in agricultural areas. Babies born to mothers with low levels of education have a higher risk of experiencing health problems than babies born to mothers with higher education. The occurrence of ISPA in agricultural areas is caused by various environmental factors such as exposure to smoke and inadequate physical conditions of houses which can worsen indoor air quality. Potential risk factors that can cause STH infection are parental education and occupation, how to play on the ground, use of the toilet and how to wash hands. Nurses must provide support and education to people in agricultural areas related to providing nutritional intake, quality of living environment, and patterns of daily life in order to reduce problems with nutritional status and respiratory disorders in children.
