Abstract

Introduction: The use of synthetic preservatives such as formalin in food products, especially tofu, has raised serious health concerns, including the risk of cancer. Objective: As a solution, this study aims to evaluate the potential combination of bay leaf extract (Syzygium polyanthum) and garlic (Allium sativum) as a natural preservative to replace synthetic preservatives in tofu. Method: The study was conducted using a completely randomized block design (RCBD) with variations in extract concentration and tofu storage duration, as well as testing of physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory characteristics. Results and Discussion: The results showed that bay leaf extract produced a dark green color with a strong aroma, while garlic extract maintained a white color with a distinctive aroma without changes in texture. The combination of both extracts gave a complex aroma but showed black spots and mold growth on the 6th day of storage. Microbiologically, the combination of bay leaf and garlic extracts effectively reduced the number of Escherichia coli to below the detection limit, but slightly increased the total coliform count. Conclusion: The conclusion of the results is there the combination of bay leaf and garlic extracts can improve the sensory quality of tofu and reduce pathogenic bacteria, but further management is needed to ensure the microbiological safety of the product.

Abstract

Introducction: Alam Barajo Sub-district in Jambi City has been identified as the area with the highest waste generation, estimated at 79,202 tons per day or 28,988 tons annually, with a population of 101,350 as of 2022. Despite this high volume of waste, four illegal Temporary Waste Shelters (TPSS) were identified in the region. Objective: The purpose of this study is to Analyze Illegal Temporary Waste Shelters in Alam Barajo Sub-district, Jambi City. Method: A qualitative research method with a descriptive approach was applied, focusing on data collected between November 2024 and January 2025. The research explored several variables: the distribution and locations of illegal TPSS, contributing factors to their existence, their environmental and public health impacts, and the current management efforts in place. Results and Discussion: Distribution variables have been carried out in every illegal waste shelter, causal variables such as lack of public awareness, limited facilities and implementation of waste management regulations, causing environmental impacts and health risks. Efforts made by the government include improving facilities, educating the public, and enforcing applicable regulations. Conclusion: The findings revealed that the proliferation of illegal TPSS is mainly driven by low public awareness, inadequate official waste facilities, and weak enforcement of waste management regulations. These conditions contribute to environmental degradation and pose health risks, as accumulated waste serves as a breeding ground for disease vectors. Government efforts include infrastructure improvements, public education, and stricter enforcement.

Abstract

Introduction: Pneumonia is an acute respiratory infection that affects the lungs. The lungs are made up of small pockets called alveoli. In a healthy person, the alveoli are filled with air, but when a person is affected by pneumonia, the alveoli become filled with fluid or pus, causing difficulty in breathing and leading to symptoms such as feeling unwell. Objective: To explore the factors influencing the use of antibiotics in patients with pneumonia at Eduardo Ximenes Regional Hospital (EXRH) in Baucau, Timor-Leste. Research Methodology: The researchers employed a quantitative analysis approach with a cross-sectional design. Data collection was carried out using a purposive sampling technique to analyze the factors that influence the use of antibiotics for pneumonia patients at EXRH in Baucau, Timor-Leste. Results and Discussion: The results from EXRH indicated that many respondents had limited knowledge about pharmacodynamics, with 46 respondents (35.4%) reporting frequent lack of knowledge. Regarding pharmacokinetics, 50 respondents (38.5%) showed a lack of understanding, while 53 respondents (40.8%) demonstrated moderate knowledge of host factors. Conclusion: The survey results show that pharmacodynamic and host factors influence the use of antibiotics in patients with pneumonia, while pharmacokinetic factors did not appear to significantly impact antibiotic use.

Abstract

Stunting is a condition in which a child experiences growth disturbances, resulting in a height that is not appropriate for their age. This condition is caused by chronic nutritional problems, namely a lack of nutrient intake over a long period, starting from pregnancy. In addition, it is also exacerbated by mothers’ lack of knowledge regarding stunting prevention. Ciparay Subdistrict is the second priority area in Bandung District with a relatively high stunting rate of 25%. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mothers' knowledge about stunting prevention on the incidence of stunting in Gunung Leutik Village, Ciparay Subdistrict, Bandung District. The research method used was a quantitative descriptive approach with simple linear regression analysis. The population consisted of 149 mothers of toddlers, and the sample included 60 respondents selected using accidental sampling. The results of the study with simple linear regression analysis produced a regression coefficient (b) of -0.135 and an intercept (a) of 1.638, resulting in the regression equation Y = 1.638 – 0.135X. It can be concluded that every one-level increase in knowledge reduces the incidence of stunting by 0.135. In other words, the higher the mother's knowledge about stunting prevention, the lower the incidence of stunting. Based on these results, it is expected that mothers of toddlers will improve their knowledge regarding stunting prevention

Abstract

Early detection and prevention of stunting are top priorities in improving child health outcomes in Indonesia. The village health volunteers play a strategic role in monitoring toddler growth through accurate anthropometric measurements. However, their levels of knowledge, motivation, and measurement precision vary considerably. This study aims to describe the knowledge, motivation, and accuracy of anthropometric measurements among village health volunteers in the early detection and prevention of stunting. A cross-sectional study design was employed, involving 110 village health volunteers in a rural district of Aceh, Indonesia. Data were collected through questionnaires and direct observations and analysed using univariate tests. The results indicate that the village health volunteers possess a medium level of knowledge, motivation, and accuracy in anthropometric measurement. The findings underscore the importance of enhancing the capacity of health volunteers through ongoing training, intensified supervision, and support from multiple stakeholders, thereby enabling village health volunteers to play a more effective role in the early detection and prevention of stunting

Abstract

Hypertension in pregnancy remains a leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality, particularly in developing countries. This study aims to determine the prevalence and determinant factors of hypertension in pregnancy at Dr. Muhammad Zyn Regional Hospital, Sampang, in the year 2024. A cross-sectional study design was employed, utilizing electronic medical records of pregnant women diagnosed with hypertension from January to December 2024. The variables analyzed included maternal age, body mass index (BMI), gestational age, type of antihypertensive therapy, postpartum visits, as well as the severity and reduction of hypertension. A total of 332 patients were included in the analysis. The majority were aged 20–35 years (60.8%) and had pregnancies beyond 37 weeks of gestation (72.0%). Most participants were categorized as obese (55.7%) with a mean BMI of 31.84 kg/m². Grade 2 hypertension was observed in 64.2% of cases, while 19.0% presented with hypertensive emergencies. Following treatment, 66.9% of patients achieved normal blood pressure levels. Magnesium sulfate was the most commonly administered therapy. Logistic regression analysis revealed that high BMI (OR: 1.073), high parity (OR: 1.733), and a history of hypertension (OR: 2.331) were significantly associated with hypertensive disorders in pregnancy. These findings underscore the critical importance of early detection and appropriate management in reducing the risk of hypertensive complications during pregnancy
