Abstract

Literary works are frequently used to express human expression through words, making literary works one of the unique mediums to express these expressions. The uniqueness lies within the language used to construct the story itself. Therefore, this study aims to uncover the factors that make a literary work great through formalism and defamiliarization theory, furthermore uncovering the impact of the factors on the story. Using a qualitative research method specifically close reading, this study describes how the strength of a short story The Tell-Tale Heart written by Edgar Allan Poe according to both formalism and defamiliarization theory can contribute to the construction of the story. The construction of the story relies on its tension which is delivered through the use of its imageries, form/structure, parallelism, etc. It can be concluded that the possession of the formalism elements helps the story to shape its nuance and its atmospheric storytelling

Abstract

This study determined the respondents’ level and causes of their anxiety and the strategies that they use in the context of English language learning (ELL). Also, it identified the language strategies that predict success in overcoming the students’ ELL anxiety. Descriptive-correlational design was used in the study. It involved 171 Grades 9 and 10 indigenous peoples of selected schools in the province of Ilocos Norte. It used two gathering tools: Horowitz et al. (1986) Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) adopted from Oxford (1990). The data gathered from FLCAS made use of descriptive analysis to compute the means and SILL were analysed using averages, percentages and ranks. Pearson r and multiple regression analysis were used to determine the language strategies that could predict respondents’ language learning anxiety and language strategies. The salient findings are: 1) the selected grades 9 and 10 Indigenous peoples experience moderate level of English language learning anxiety; 2) external factors such as in-class activities and classroom atmosphere are the main causes of language learning anxiety of the respondents; 3) Metacognitive strategy is the commonly used strategy of the selected grades 9 and 10 indigenous peoples followed by social strategy, memory strategy, affective strategy, cognitive strategy, and compensation strategy; and 4) the language learning strategies used by the indigenous peoples are all beneficial in their attempt to improve their proficiency in the language. However, the cognitive and affective strategies are the best among the six.

Abstract

Unemployment is now a major problem that must be resolved immediately. The unemployment rate in Indonesia is higher than in western countries. This is because the number of entrepreneurs in Indonesia is still deficient. This study is conducted to synthetically analyze the empirical experiences of enhancing entrepreneurship in Western countries. This further understanding will be transformed and applied to Indonesian universities and societies. This study uses literature analysis approaches to find references to relevant theory with the hope that researchers can in-depth understand the experiences and the significant factors facilitating entrepreneurship in Western countries. At the end of the study, the authors conclude that the success of entrepreneurship in western countries is due to central government support for entrepreneurship. Therefore, the success of entrepreneurship in western countries that can be applied in Indonesia, such as (1) the Indonesian government must endeavor to oblige all universities in Indonesia to provide entrepreneurship classes, (2) promote entrepreneurship education and make entrepreneurship a priority, (3) implementing entrepreneurship in educational curricula at all levels, starting with preschool. , (4) providing educational scholarship facilities for economic and business actors to become entrepreneurs, (5) providing (people's business credit) with low interest for business.

Abstract

This study examines the translation approaches utilized to translate non-standard English in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift's screenplay. This study employed qualitative methods. In this study, the researcher assessed the translation technique of 102 non-standard English words from the script for The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Molina and Albir's notion of translation procedures was utilized by the researchers. In this study, the researcher found 9 kinds of translation techniques such as literal, established equivalent, adaptation, borrowing, linguistic compression, generalization, reduction, linguistic amplification, particularization. Moreover, the dominant translation technique is literal translation technique used 35 times with percentage 54,61%% from the data, followed by established equivalent 18,44% used 13 times, adaptation with 7,15% used 5 times, borrowing with 7,15% percentage from the data used 5 times, linguistic compression with percentage 3,57% used 3 times, generalization used 2 times with percentage 2,75%, reduction used 2 times with percentage 2,75%, linguistic amplification used 1 time with percentage 1,79%, and particularization percentage 1,79% used 1 time. Since the script for the Fast and the Furious movie contains many words and phrases that are not considered standard English, it makes sense that the translators would prefer the literal translation process, which includes providing an exact word-for-word counterpart. Because it uses an equivalence-based approach rather than a literal one, this method is more flexible than literal translation

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the COVID-19 metaphors in Philippine online news articles. The researchers formulated two main questions in this study: (1) What metaphors are used in online news articles during COVID-19? (2) What are the function and types of these metaphors used in online news articles during COVID-19? To answer the research question, the researchers utilized a qualitative design. A corpus of five news organizations published from March 2020 to February 2021 was gathered to evaluate the metaphors used in online news articles. The needed data was analyzed and extracted using AntConc and the frameworks Critical Metaphor analysis by Charetris-Black (2004) and the Schema Theory by Frederic Bartlett (1932). The study substantiates that “COVID-19: A pandemic of neglect” and ‘COVID-19 is an Enemy” are extremely used in the Philippine online news article. Albeit, other metaphors are also used, such as COVID-19 is Fresh, COVID-19 is a Challenge, and COVID-19 is Contagious and Widespread. The findings also reveal that the metaphors used in online news articles reflect the types of structural metaphor and function as cognitive function. Furthermore, the used metaphors prove that news writers are straightforward in delivering COVID-19 news primarily on the governments handling the pandemic.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in the average score and the effectiveness of problem based learning with the mathematics model eliciting activities approach to problem solving ability. The type of study is a quantitative research with a quasi experimental design using a pretest-posttest only control group design. The population in this study was class VIII SMPN 5 Jepara in the academic year 2022/2023 which consist of two classes. The sampling technique was carried out by purposive sampling technique, class VIII A was the control class and class VIII B was the experimental class. The data obtained through the pretest and posttest values were then processed by normality test, homogeneity test, T-Test, and N-Gain. The results obtained from the T-Test is a problem based learning model with an approach model of bringing up mathematical activities with a number of respondents 32 students and a mean of 81.22. While the control class taught by conventional learning has 31 students as respondents and the mean is 71.65. The value of t_count = 6.011 and a significance level of 5% obtained t_table = 1.999. Based on the t value, it can be written t_table (5% = 1.999) < t_count (6.011), then the results of the data analysis can be said that  is rejected and   is accepted so that "there is a difference in the average problem-solving ability of students in class that uses the learning problem learning model raises students' mathematical activities. The next test is the N-Gain test. It is found that the experimental class mathematical problem solving is better than the control class, namely the increase in the experimental class has a medium category that is 0.47 and the increase in the control class has a low category that is 0.21 so that it can be said to be increasing and effective.
