Abstract

Ecosystems Degradation in the region of Aditunggal Mahajaya Ltd had caused the region to be functioning poorly as wildlife habitat. This was indicated by the low level of wildlife encounters, both on observations during this study as well as from interviews with some of the people who live in the area. In addition, other factors causing decline in wildlife populations was the high level of animal hunting.  Most of the wildlife was found in a wooded area that had a relatively good canopy cover.  This condition was found in the area around the river, and it was also found in the mix rubberwood forest areas owned by public administrations of Ayawan River Gardens (saye). There were 15 species of mammals, 17 species of birds and three species of reptiles found in the area which included in the rare/protected category from the total of 27 species of mammals, 54 species of birds, 6 species of reptiles found in the region. Keywords: ecosystem, habitat, wildlife, and diversity of wildlife species

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the potential of big mammals as komodo’s preys in Rinca Island, Komodo National Park. Population density, sex ratio, age structure and distribution of the komodo’s preys were collected using line transect method, and the vegetation were analyzed using line square method. A total of five species of big mammals were recorded as preys of komodo on the island, and among them were Timor deer and water buffalo which were the most important food sources for komodo. Long tailed macaque, wild horse, and wild boar were the alternative food sources for komodo. Komodo ate whenever there was the opportunity, and it usually attack animals in the savanna or water sources, since these areas were important for big mammals.  Keywords: komodo, preys, mammals, population, savanna

Abstract

Forest ranger is one of Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) human resources that is assigned the job to protect and secure forests. They played very important role within The Ministry of Forestry.  As civil servant, forest ranger is evaluated using Performance Appraisal and Credit Unit.  On average, they achieved higher job rank in more than four year, which is thought to be too long. A method to enhance their performance is thus necessary.  The research objective was to formulate performance index for four levels of forest ranger's namely: junior forest ranger, forest ranger, senior forest ranger, and supervisor of forest ranger.  The research was conducted in two BKSDA, in the Provinces of Central Java and Special Region of Yogyakarta.  The performance was determined using (i) criteria and indicators, (ii) weighted indicators and (iii) performance index’s limit as requirement for promotion.  The criteria and indicators were set fixed from forest ranger’s duty, then indicator's values were defined by using Analytical Hierarchy Process’s (AHP) assessed by experts.  Performance index has five performance criteria: educational background; conducting forest protection and security operation; conducting oversight of forest products, floras and faunas circulation; professional capacity building; and carrying out complementary activities.  Each of these criteria had indicators which the amount depended on the rank of forest ranger.  Results of the Performance Index for each forest ranger’s level were 111 for junior forest ranger, 213 for forest ranger, 125 for senior forest ranger, and 72 for supervisor of forest ranger. Keywords:  forest ranger, human resources, performance index, criteria, indicator value

Abstract

As one of the very rare and critically endangered species, Javan rhinoceros currently has a population of around 40-50 heads and can only be found in Ujung Kulon National Park. However, these numbers are still questionable due to the lack of description provided by the existing methods in estimating the entire population of Javan rhinoceros in the Ujung Kulon peninsula. The Javan rhinoceros timid nature, high alertness, and tendency to avoid direct contact with human and other wildlife are the factors that complicate the estimation of population. These factors make the Javan rhinoceros difficult to find and to track. One method that can be used is the video trap data analysis method. The objective of  this research was to obtain information on the time and duration of Javan rhinoceros wallowing activities, the patterns and mechanisms of Javan rhinoceros wallowing activities, and the types of activity of Javan rhinoceros during wallowing. Keywords :  Javan rhinoceros, wallowing behavior
