Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Integration farming of quail with Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) has the potential to support a circular economy and offer various benefits for future sustainability. To promote sustainable farming systems, it is essential to examine farmers' perceptions and the factors that influence their adoption of such systems. The objective of this study was to understand the bioconversion of BSFL with quail excreta as substrate, the potential of integrated farming models, and farmers' perceptions of BSFL. This research was conducted from July 2023 to March 2024. The BSFL bioconversion data were collected through observational studies and measurement techniques. Production and economic performance data, along with farmers' perceptions, were obtained through a combination of observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews with 11 quail farmers. The collected data were analyzed using both descriptive and comparative methods, employing the statistical software MS Excel and SPSS 22. The findings indicated that the combination of organic phenolics added to quail feed and fermented excreta as a substrate for BSFL yielded the optimal bioconversion value. Another notable finding is that integrated quail farming yields enhanced economic performance due to its ability to generate added value. However, it is essential to note that farmers exhibited varying degrees of knowledge and perceptions regarding BSFL. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of enhancing production performance, as well as economic, social, and environmental sustainability, by fostering a circular economy through an integrated approach of quail farming with BSFL. However, it is crucial to note that educational and training programs, as well as mentorship related to the technical aspects of quail-BSFL production, in conjunction with financial assistance, are essential to augment the adoption rate of this integrated approach.

Abstract

One of the challenges of dairy farming is the availability of feed to meet the needs of livestock. This study aims to 1) identify the potential and problems of utilizing local feed, as well as the potential for implementing silage development; 2) analyze factors that influence the adoption of locally sourced feed innovations; 3) develop strategies for sustainable adoption and increasing the capacity of dairy farmers. This study used a participatory approach involving 47 farmers as a two-year action study (2023–2024). Data collection methods include surveys, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions (FGDs). Data was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) to identify factors that influence the adoption of silage innovations. The results of the study showed that the adoption of silage technology was influenced by the characteristics of farmers, the role of extension workers, and the nature of the innovation. Although the potential for local feed is abundant, its utilization is still low due to limited knowledge of farmers and processing infrastructure. The structural model test showed a significant relationship between silage adoption and increased milk productivity (coefficient 0.508; p = 0.008). This study recommends strengthening the institution of livestock farmers through the People's Livestock School (SPR), continuous training, and integration of crop-livestock systems (SITT) to optimize local resources. The proposed design model includes silage-based feed diversification, utilization of agricultural waste, and partnerships with agribusiness actors. This study provides a reference for sustainable agricultural policies and the development of technological innovations that are adaptive to the characteristics of smallholder farmers.

Abstract

The growing number of smallholder farmers in Indonesia necessitates the strengthening of economic institutions through the farmer corporation model. This study examines the role of stakeholders in strengthening communication networks to support farmer institutions in Jayakerta District, Karawang. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from 281 farmers through surveys and 28 stakeholders through in-depth interviews. The results show that coordination among stakeholders remains limited. Communication network analysis reveals that farmers with high centrality are more actively involved in exchanging production-related information, while those with low centrality tend to seek marketing information but have limited interaction. Spearman’s test indicates that internal farmer factors do not significantly influence communication networks (ρ = 0.072; p > 0.05), whereas stakeholder support shows a negative yet significant correlation (ρ = -0.128; p < 0.05), indicating a mismatch between the form of support provided and the farmers’ actual needs. Although support is provided in various forms, its integration is not yet optimal. Strengthening communication networks and ensuring consistent stakeholder involvement are key to the success of farmer corporations. Local actors, such as voluntary agricultural extension agents, play a crucial role in reinforcing farmer information exchange. The low level of digital literacy among farmers also calls for policy interventions through training and capacity-building programs. These findings underscore the importance of integrated communication systems in supporting institution-based agricultural development in Indonesia.
